President’s Report Needless to say, there has been one hell of a lot of changes in our lives since my last President’s Report in
March. I hope and pray everyone is staying safe and healthy.
Based on mandates from ASPE’s headquarters, along with State and federal requirements, we have cancelled
our normal April and May monthly meetings where our chapter members and guests attended in person.
Complying with social distancing requirements, we will now be providing virtual meetings in April and May. These
type of meetings will be provided from ASPE National, free to all our Baltimore chapter members as well as a way
to earn CEUs from ASPE approved virtual meeting topics.
April’s virtual meeting topic will be The Engineer and Code Official Relationship/Common Plumbing Plan Review
and Code Violations for Plumbing Systems. This virtual meeting will be available to all Baltimore chapter
members to view online at their convenience beginning Monday, April 20th thru Sunday, April 26th. All chapter
ASPE members will be pre-registered by ASPE National so they can automatically watch the virtual meeting with
they chose.
All of this coordination for our virtual meetings is still in progress. There will be an email blast to all our members
in the next week or so from the chapter to provide instructions and additional information for the virtual meetings.
Stay tune and please stay safe.
Hopefully everyone is aware that our annual golf outing usually held in April was postponed. Our new date for our
golf outing will be Friday, October 16th, 2020. Please mark your calendars.
Feel free to contact be for anything.
Best Regards,
Jeff Edwards, CPD, GPD

a loyalty or allegiance to a cause. We cannot think of a better term that defines many of

members for their dedication to our chapter. We hope to present these awards at a future

WOA Report
I’m really excited for our women of ASPE cooking event, however I realize with the current reality, we will not be able to hold the event at our originally scheduled date in May. While the Baltimore Chef Shop is a small venue and we were already limited to 15 attendees by the size of their kitchen, until the governor lifts the stay at home order and increases the limit of number people allowed to gather together, we won’t be able to hold the event. We will let you know when we have a new date for the cooking event. I look forward to seeing all your smiling faces when we can gather together in person safely!
Best Regards,
Karen Schulte, PE, CPD, LEED AP BD+C

Technical Report The phrase “Strange Times” keeps popping up over and over these last few weeks from the news and from conversations. I’ll save the doom and gloom, and instead offer a more optimistic tone. There have been some great actions for the greater good and difficult decisions have been made. I am fortunate that my career allows me and my coworkers to work from home. It has been challenging, but the commute has its benefits. I will say that it is humbling to be considered part of an essential industry, and I can see the logic behind it. Without consultant engineers, manufacturer representatives, architects, and the like, our clients lose the support they need to keep their buildings operating and the ability to capitalize when the stay-at-home orders are lifted. It may not seem like it, but it will get better.
It doesn’t seem that long ago, but our last meeting was in February! Professor Ken Isman was kind enough to present on the importance of Fire Protection hydraulic calculations and I hope you gained as much as I did. Mostly what I learned was that my initial calculations were very conservative, but there is always room for refinement.
As you may have already heard our April meeting has transitioned to a virtual meeting. ASPE national has been kind enough to offer their Education portal and allow us to host a webinar titled, “The Engineer and Code Official Relationship: Common Plumbing Plan Review and Code Violations for Plumbing Systems.” This webinar was recorded at the 2019 ASPE Technical Symposium in Pittsburgh and was well attended. We will
be able to make this webinar available beginning April 20th through April 26th. Much like the title says,
Dan O’Gorman will discuss different topics like, the legal responsibilities of the Code Reviewer and Engineer, Roof Drainage Code Issues, Water Cross Connection issues, and others.

AYP Report
I commend those who have made the health and safety of themselves, their family, and their colleagues a top priority by following the CDC guidelines for social distancing. The work that Engineers and manufacturer’s do, especially for hospitals, is essential every day, but especially today as we experience the COVID-19 pandemic. I am optimistic that as we ‘flatten the curve’, our lives will begin to return to normal, and we will come out on the other side more appreciative of every moment with friends and family.
If you or your colleagues are assisting with design work related to COVID sizing, please contact me directly for a copy of Mark Allen’s COVID Sizing Guide, a supplement to the original Medical Gas Design Guide. It provides insight on gas consumption, pressure losses, and much more.
While you’re home, please tune into the ASPE Webinars between 4/22-4/28 for a FREE virtual meeting. All Baltimore ASPE members who view this webinar will earn CEUs.
Thank you and we will meet again!

Membership Report
Hello again Folks!
I hope everyone is doing well during this difficult time. It’s been quite an adjustment for me working from home, but I was upgraded to a window office! It’s all about taking time to appreciate the little things these days I think.
To Business – Unfortunately with the March meeting being cancelled, we will have to distribute our Membership Tenure Awards at a future in-person meeting. Not sure when that’ll be, but I promise it’ll be worth the wait for those accepting awards.
No new members to report this month, which isn’t too surprising. But as always if you or someone you know wants more information about joining ASPE or any of the programs ASPE offers feel free to reach out to me.

Treasury Report
Wow! What craziness has descended on all of us since we were together at the end of February! It
doesn’t look like we will be able to meet during this ASPE 2019-2020 year but maybe May might
work out…keep your fingers crossed. I am an eternal optimist!
For those of you who prepaid for the March meeting that was cancelled I would ask that you call me
with your address and I will send you a check. My office number is 240-553-0112 and my cell # 443
-250-0285.
Please stay safe and healthy and hopefully we will all be back together before we know it.
Take care.
