2. This video, though simple, is a goodexample of concept. The
artist of the songremains invisible; there is no kind ofperformance
or narrative aspect to distractfrom the concept. The song is
moving, andthe video fits this, the consistency of theballs moving,
represents I think life and itson-going cycle. Colour is especially
notablein this video, the vibrancy of the ballsdisorients yet
engages the audiences, alongside the unlikeliness of a stream
ofbouncy balls travelling down a road. Thevideo is more conceptual
than narrativebecause of the lack of people to drive thenarrative,
though the profiles or backs ofcharacters are included, the focus
remainswith the balls and their journey throughthe suburban
streets.
3. The Script- Before the worst. This video is atoken example
of performance. The entirevideo never wavers from the
bandperforming the song seemingly live. Thevideo gives the
impression of the bandrehearsing, the lack of audience in
thestadium indicting this. The effect of thevideo concentrating
solely on the bandgives an illusion of intimacy with the band, which
is important to an audience, as wellas not distracting from the
music, andfocusing on nothing but the band.
4. This video, though also performance, isprimarily narrative.
The content on the song(the end of the relationship) is made
incrediblyclear through the artists of the songperforming the song
in a duet, and directly toeach other, as though they themselves are
thecharacters in the song. The video could also beconstrued as
concept, particularly because ofthe couple being intertwined in the
mural, metaphorical for being intertwined in arelationship. This
Gotye video is an example ofsome videos fitting conventions of many
musicvideos. Although I believe its primarilynarrative, there is
also aspects of concept aswell as performance, because the two
artistsare performing their song, but are also thecharacters in the
lyrics.
