Confederations Cup: Spain edge Italyin penalty epic to book final berth

Brasilia,Spain booked a date

with Brazil in the Confed-erations Cup final with an7-6 penalty shoot-out vic-tory over Italy at theCastelao. Although theWorld Cup holdersstormed to a 4-0 win overthe Azzurri in the Euro2012 final, this encounterproved far more evenly-contested. Vicente delBosque`s menmonopolised possessionbut lacked a cutting edgein attack, while Italymissed numerouschances throughout as thematch ended goalless.

With nothing to sepa-rate the two nations thegame went to penalties, where Jesus Navasproved to be the hero ashe scored the crucial spotkick as the shoot-out fin-ished 7-6 to Spain.

Cesare Prandelliswitched to a three-mandefence and his side be-gan impressively, despite

letting the Spaniards con-trol possession of the ball.

The Azzurr i, though, with the Fortaleza crowdbacking them, looked su-perb on the counter-attack.After Alberto Gilardino hadfailed to pick out the bot-tom corner from AntonioCandreva`s cross, theybecame increasingly con-fident and forged yet morechances to find the net.Christian Maggio was un-able to guide a headerfrom Andrea Pirlo`s ex-quisite pass past IkerCasillas in the 17th minuteand Daniele De Rossi`sglancing header missedthe target 60 secondslater. In the 19th minuteClaudio Marchisio missedthe best of the bunch, though, as he nodded theball well wide of the targetfrom Candreva`s cushiondespite finding plenty ofspace between the twocentre-backs.

That flurry of activity en-couraged Spain to reduce

the tempo and steady them-selves, but the Azzurri wereagain next to test the oppos-ing goalkeeper. Jordi Albawas being nullified by the ad-venturous combination ofCandreva and Maggio, andthe latter was only denied agoal when a brilliant Casillassave kept his 36th-minuteheader out of the net. Spainalmost immediately pun-ished Prandelli`s side fortheir profligacy in front ofgoal one minute later, butafter turning AndreaBarzagli in wonderful fash-ion Fernando Torres couldnot find a finish to match ashe pulled his shot wide of thetarget. With La Roja failingto show an increased threatimmediately after the restartDel Bosque introducedJesus Navas in the 50thminute. The new Manches-ter City signing had a posi-tive impact, calling GianluigiBuffon into action with adriven shot from 20 yardsshortly before the hour mark.
