At the back of their mind, they might evenlink it to solving terror related issues with Aadhaaras well. Hope it is not used to target a particularcommunity. Some of it may be true but some aspectof it comes close to the Third Reich propaganda.The privacy aspect and its possible abuse by Govtand cyber security issues are critical aspects wemust watch out for.

Aadhaar is a 12-digit random number. It is aunique number and is allotted whenever yourenrolment data is processed and your data is foundto be unique as compared to other data already withUIDAI. Since it is biometric based, there is hardlyany chance of it being misused. But that is what issaid by UIDAI and Govt., as for a few of us, it bringsin a feeling of being monitored or watched! Butfinally we have to go for our favourite 'Aadhaarpose', get pictures clicked and give our biometricsscanned and get our Aadhaar card registration doneafter much delay and reluctance. There are stillPILs in the SC and hoping something positive comesout of it.

Aadhaar card is not a Social Security Numberwhere someone can siphon off an individual'swealth or allows you to get non-employment sopslike the US. In today's era all the data is stored onlinein a database which can be hacked and accessed.Even iOS was hacked by FBI with the help of thirdparty hackers. There are so many potential waysin which Aadhaar Card can be misused:

* Aadhaar India project is to be accomplished by

private companies or banks. Foreign companiesmay also be included in it. Hence, agglomerationof individual data of people will lead to centralizationof data which will create various kinds of problemsto government and people. Aadhaar makes it veryeasy for people to hack into government system andlook for individual details; hence, making it an unsafepolicy.

* The government is tracking all your activitiesand it is an effective tool of mass surveillance.Finding personal details of people will become mucheasier. Hence this will be unsafe in terms of privacy.There was a recent incident wherein in the detailsof 130 million people and 100 million bank accountsdetails were out.

* Person, who can leak Aadhaar, can further linkall the data linked to it with respect to individualincomes.

o Bio-Metrics of a person can be used for identitytheft. Imagine you go to get a foreign country Visaand they say your fingerprints have already beenused by Mr.XYZ and your visa gets rejected.Mr.XYZ gave a stolen data Aadhaar with yourfingerprints as a proof and now you lose out and isleft stranded.

* Subsidies and PDS schemes: Aadhaar projecthas been linked to some public subsidy andunemployment benefit schemes like the domesticLPG scheme and MGNREGS. In these DirectBenefit Transfer schemes, the subsidy money isdirectly transferred to a bank account which isAadhaar-linked. These benefits can be taken underyour name by someone who doesn't deserve it.Might not directly affect you. But affects us all asa nation. Electronic thefts are difficult to detect formass illiterate Indians.

* If this is used for bank transaction or ATM cumDebit cum Credit cards, it will make easier forcriminals of society to misuse them. Anything onlineis open to cyber crime.

There are two sides of a coin. Let us take thepositive side of the project:

Adhaar has enabled the government tostrengthen the Public Distribution System and itmakes sure that the benefit goes to the targetsegment.

Adhaar has enabled the government to eliminate4.4 million Ghost kids in the mid-day meal scheme.Imagine the corruption that was there.

Adhaar enables the government to tackle theFinancial and other crimes more effectively.

It will become very hard for anti social elementsto just impersonate citizens.

People will find the card as very useful tool butthis will also create some insecurity. Centralizationmight turned to be a danger in future. Hence it isexpected to keep safety of data specially as thiswould be in electronic computer database andgovernments are facing hacking of computer data.These are just a few of some of the major thingswhich can go wrong with this plan. We sure don't

want the government system to get hacked especiallywith all our details mentioned and stored in it.

How to make Aadhaar safe according to govt.agency?

The online world is continuously under threat withpasswords and crucial information getting stolen andwebsites getting hacked. Recently, there have beenmultiple cases where the Aadhaar biometricauthentication is being used for identity frauds. In caseyou are not aware, getting an Aadhaar card requiresyou to register your biometric data (fingerprint andretinal scan data) which is used for Aadhaarverification and becomes a strong marker of youridentity. The manner in which the biometric detailsof the citizens are collected on various platformswithout any safeguard makes it prone to misuse.

The only way to avoid this is to lock your biometricinformation stored on UIDAI's servers when you arenot using them and add an extra layer of protectionto your sensitive data. No one can misuse of it untilyou help them directly or indirectly. So, be carefulabout that. Don't share any OTP when arrives to yourphone to anyone. Besides that, to avoid misuses of yourAadhaar Card you can lock your biometric. None canuse your biometric until you unlock it.

And finally, Mamatadi, CM of West Bengal, hadraised objections to universalisation of Aadhaar.There are merits in her arguments though she is boundto oppose the move as an opposition leader and perpenchant for such talks; but the Central governmentmust go all out to dispel doubts about the project. Sinceas most of us are aware that eGov or Digital India isa centrally formulated plan but executed at projectlevel by the state. Specific targeting of beneficiariesand removing duplication in subsidy were the earlierstated objective when Mr. Nandan Nilekani initiatedthe process. It was believed that it would stop wastageof national resource and reach the target audience thatwas possible and most important benefit of the project.It is not just subsidies; even duplication of any kindcould be eliminated - be it electoral rolls and multipleaccounts in banks and tax issues. I think NDA govt.must come up with their own innovations. Imaginehaving a database of potential terrorist and bustingthem before they make a move! But the question ishow will a database identifies them; it could be usedto target a particular community on mere suspicion.There are many things that could go wrong. But thereare also many positives; let us put our weight behindthe positives for now.
