For more than 25 years, Operation Classroom has partnered with
the Liberia and Sierra Leone Annual Conferences of The United
Methodist Church to improve secondary education and health
care. School buildings have been rebuilt and expanded, Hospitals
have been built, nearly 100 containers of educational and medical
supplies have been shipped, and hundreds of volunteers have gone
to West Africa on V.I.M. Teams. However, the church in both
countries has requested that we give renewed focus to education,
particularly vocational education.
The Mission of Operation Classroom is to partner with the United
Methodist Churches of Liberia and Sierra Leone to improve sec-
ondary education – particularly vocational education.
Some of the ladies have been sewing book bags all year. The back to school sales are starting and we can start to
fill them now. Each bag is to contain:
3 spiral notebooks or 3 packs of 150 loose leaf
sheets
1 blunt scissors
1 pencil sharpener
1 - 30 centimeter (12 inch) ruler
6 unsharpened pencils (no advertising, religious,
patriotic or camouflage symbols please)
1 - 2 inch eraser
24 pack of crayons
Operation Christmas Child Shoe Box collections will take place at our church again this fall. Thank you for
your contributions and support in the past years. You helped put smiles on many children's faces!! It is that
time of the year again when there are great sales in the school supply aisles of most stores. Please keep in
mind most of the countries these boxes go to, children are not allowed to even start school without these sup-
plies! Hygiene items are greatly needed also. Imagine not being able to wash your face or brush your teeth
each day!
Please prayerfully consider filling a shoebox or bringing items to the church so we can fill the boxes later. A
table will be set up in the church with a display of suggested items to put in a box as well as a container for
placing your donated items. We will be making the individual OCC shoe boxes available for you to pack in
September.
Thank you in advance for helping us out again this year and warming the hearts of the less fortunate.
If questions, please feel free to contact Renee Poppe at 507-236-1582 or Anita Tumbleson at 507-236-2853.

Holy Communion at Lakeview and
Lutz Wing in August
Our church offers a
monthly service of
Holy Communion at
the Lakeview United
Methodist Heath Care
Center and at the Lutz
Wing at Mayo Clinic
Health Systems –
Fairmont. Pastor
Tony also offers Holy Communion at
Goldfinch Estates and Ingleside residence
on a rotating schedule.
These Eucharist services are offered for the
members of Fairmont United Methodist
Church and all the residents, staff and
friends who attend because the United
Methodist Church practices an open table
for communion.
This month these services will be
2:00 Tuesday, August 18th
at the Lakeview United Methodist
Health Care Chapel with coffee
following the service.
2:00 Thursday, August 20th at Lutz Wing in the hospital
Chapel.
You are invited to attend these services and
enjoy the presence of Christ with the
residents of these care centers.
Holy Communion Servers Needed
Our church offers monthly services of Holy
Communion around Fairmont each month.
We are looking for persons who would like
to help out at one or more of these sites.
Pastor Tony leads the service, we are asking
you to help serve the
Communion elements
to those residents
who attend the
service, as well as
being a warm,
welcoming, and
friendly person to be
with us during the
service.
If you feel like Jesus
might be nudging you to
visit with those who
attend these services,
please talk to Pastor
Tony.
Due to the absences of both Pastor Tony and our Education Director, Sarah Hilpipre,
this past month, I am sorry to report that there will be no pastor’s articles or education
article in this issue of the Circuit Rider. They both plan to be back and on the job next
month and it will be exciting to hear from them at that time. I know that we are all
anxiously awaiting the fall schedule and all the exciting things that will be coming. I
hope each and everyone of you has had an exciting and restful summer. I, for one, am
looking forward to seeing each and everyone of you this fall. Your Editor

Thank you to our
church family
for all the kind
words of condo-
lence, prayers
and cards which we received after the loss
of my father, Charles Hill. Also, thanks to
the Caring Ministry Team for the message
of condolence, the HyVee gift card and the
book “Grieving the Loss of a Parent” . All
these things helped to reduce the pain of
the loss of a loved father and friend.
Larry and Yong Hill
I would like to thank my church family for
their prayers. Thank you also the Prayer
Shawl Team for the beautiful prayer shawl.
I will hold it close to me on my cancer jour-

trict office.
A Note from Penny Jane: Our services
for the next two weeks are tied together
with the thin thread of the theme “Rocks
and Stones.” These ‘theme words’ will be
found in the Scripture Readings, in the Call
to Worship and in at least one hymn each
week, and will provide the basis for the ser-
mons. Scripture has many stories using vari-
ous kinds of rocks and stones, in various
ways, and for various purposes. I have se-
lected five diverse stories,. For fun this
week, see how many Bible stories and refer-
ences to rocks and stones you can think of,k
and then see if I picked my stories from
your list!
Please pray for our youth and chaperones

Fireside Quilters keep stitching away every
Tuesday afternoon, 1-3 pm. We have block
cutters, pattern designers and those that
sew them together and tie the yarn plus do-
nations of fabric and thread. We enjoy the
challenge of matching the fabrics we receive
and the fellowship around the tables.
Pearl Cheney got the group together in 2012
when we sent quilts with Katie to Africa. We
continued the next year by making 38 quilts
for the Salvation Army. 2014 we made 25
quilts for House of Hope. This year we have
made lap robes. Fairmont Fire Department,
Adrian Memory Care, Lutz Wing, Lakeview
Methodist Home all received some of the
over 70 sewed this year. They are all com-
pleted with a label that says it all.

on August 7th to plan the Program/Budget.
We will see you again on September 3rd
for our first regular UMW meeting in the
fall. Martha Circle will be responsible for
the program and Rachel Circle will serve as
hostess.
Naomi Circle will serve cookies at Lakeview
on the 4th Monday of August (August 24th).
Did you witness 'the bombs bursting in

Perhaps you visited Heritage Acres on
the 4th where many were gathered to
celebrate....Good foods and good job by
those who helped make this a success!
Everything in summer is food-related, enhancing
our group read of EAT WITH JOY
by Rachel Marie Stone. Sharon Ring will share
the next chapter this Thursday, July
23rd. There's some points for action listed in
each chapter:
-Let children choose for themselves from
healthy foods. Let them help you prepare them.
God desperately loves, cares for and wants to
feed the people He has created.
New BAM member, Karen Meier, has already en-
ergized us with her eloquence and leadership.
We met in June sharing all we had read. Jean
Potter added a new book,
FINDING GOD IN A BAG OF GROCERIES by L.
Willis. She had checked out HIDDEN IN RUB-
BLE from the lending library. The author was
part of a medical team for endless patients in-
jured by Haiti's earthquake. Dee Schuster liked DISFIGURED and LIKE BREAD AND WATER. Future BAM dates are August 27th, September 24th and Oct. 22nd.
“Undies” - Hundreds of peo-
ple at Simpson Housing Ser-
vicews will be comforted by
the June “Undies” gifts. Va-
cation Bible School items are included in
these figures. Surpassing our goal of 100 un-
dies—you gave 168 pairs. Seventeen towels
and 103 wash cloths were received. Eleven
pairs of gloves, 30 bars of soap. In addition,
there was a plastic grocery bag of small
shampoos and lotions, along with smaller num-
bers of assorted healath care products. VBS
families donated $192. in cash. Once again
youi’ve been generous to those needing our
attention. We hope to deliver them in Au-
gust, so donations are still welcome until
then. Millie Adams, Missions Chair
Francis Asbury was the Methodist bishop in coloni-
al times. Under Asbury's leadership American
Methodist grew at a remarkable rate, rising from a
few hundred members in 1771 to more than
200,000 in 1816, the year of his death. During his
45 years in America Asbury traveled at least
130,000 miles by horse and crossed the Allegheny
Mountains some 60 times. He was not known for
his preaching but for his riding, praying, visit-
ing. He rarely spent more than a few days in any
one location. There are many more interesting
facts in the magazine, "Christian History". Educa-
tion was always important to Methodists and the
circuit riders were expected to carry literature
for others to read as well as to preach (and
live) the gospel. The first schools and colleges
were started by Methodists. And that continues
today as our missionaries go into places in US and
overseas. We can help as we sew school bags and
buy the notebooks, pencils, pens, rulers, pencil
sharpeners, big erasers and scissors that go into
them. It is difficult for parents to get the items
needed for the student. This is one way we can
help. The "Go back to school" ads have started. I
enjoy getting the items for school bags knowing
how much it will help some child. Won't you do this
too? Jean Potter
