Your Associate Minister Writes
Dear Friends,
The saying goes “If you want something done ask a busy person.” It is true,
and it is amazing and wonderful that many I meet in these parishes work so
hard and tirelessly. I’m also sure that many work harder in retirement than they
did when they had a “proper job”! At least a proper job had some boundaries.
What I’m still learning is that in church and community life there are very few
voices that say “Take some quality time off!” For we all tend to try and pack as
much into a day as we can. Then, when we moan how fast time flies it is our
own fault, because we are the ones making it fly past with our own busyness.
Time, and our good use of it, is a skilful pursuit. My lovely late mother had the
wrong idea when she would say, through clenched teeth, “I’m determined to
relax!” Yet, in the next breath, she could recite the words of the beautiful Sal-
vation Army song ….
Take time to be holy,
The world rushes on;
Spend much time in secret
With Jesus alone;
By looking to Jesus,
Like him thou shalt be;
Thy friends in thy conduct
His likeness shall see.
Can I ask you to take some time on Sunday 9th November to stand in silence for
two minutes and remember those who died for this country? May that moment
of quiet never be shortened or abandoned because we do not have the time to
remember. The times and places of our Remembrance Sunday Services are on
the back cover of this magazine. Please take the time to join with us and re-
member those who fought and died for our country.
And take some personal time out. Take some quality time. Take some solitary
time to spend with God as “the world rushes on”. It’s called prayer. St Kenti-
gern’s in Caldbeck has a new Quiet Room next to the main door. Why not pop
in to church and give it a try?
Yours, feeling rather hypocritical as this letter is a timely reminder to myself to
take time to be holy … with Jesus alone!
Yours, hopefully in less haste,
Malcolm.

HOST HOST is looking for kind, friendly, hospitable people of all ages whose imaginations are caught by the idea of welcoming an international stu-dent at university here, far from his or her own family, to their home, for a day, a weekend or at Christmas. HOST is a voluntary activity which makes ambassadors for international goodwill of us all. Please see www.hostuk.org or call Kerrie Brooks 01697 324473. Thank you

CALDBECK MOTHERS’ UNION
The September meeting of Mothers’ Union began by Ann Wade giving out the
relevant notices and welcoming everyone including the guest speakers, Dennis
and Ann Balmer from Houghton, who had come to share a photographic pres-
entation entitled “Joy.”
The volunteer leader for September , Shirley Rolfe, chose the hymn “All
things bright and beautiful”, as it reflected the theme of joy and also the beau-
tiful weather we were all enjoying. The prayers included thanks for the Har-
vest and the bible reading was Psalm 121.
Ann Balmer began the presentation by surprisingly announcing that Dennis
and she were an “Item” and had been married for 50 years! Telling us how
they had met all those years ago and how their shared Christian faith had sus-
tained them in the ups and downs of life experiences. Ann said that joy was
at the very heart of Christianity and the angels had announced “good news of
great joy” at the birth of Jesus. There were a number of verses in the Bible
which included the word “joy” and everyone was invited to dip into a box of
printed texts to read as a reminder.
Dennis explained that his retirement had allowed him to expand his interest in
photography and his camera went everywhere with him. His photographic
presentation began in the Yorkshire Dales. Using his laptop and a projector
accompanied by a selection of background music the photographs then took
us to Montrose, Abbotsford, Dalston Show, Haweswater, Langdale, Talkin
Tarn and Rydal Water. This was indeed a thoughtful, breathtaking and beauti-
ful selection. There was enough time to show another set of photographs, so
he selected a group taken whilst on holiday on the Isle of Mull. This was fa-
vourably received as many members had themselves been to visit Mull.
Margaret Hellon gave the vote of thanks, announcing that Henry (husband)
and herself were also an “item” and had nearly reached 60 years of married
life! Amusingly, not long after their marriage one lady in the village declared
that she only gave them 18 months! Margaret thanked Dennis and Ann for
their vivid reminder of God’s goodness and for their joyous, uplifting presen-
tation which would remain in our memories for a long time.
THANK YOU Christine and Carl Swann would like to thank everyone who helped to make their wedding day so special, including those who arranged the removal of the skip from outside the front gate, and swept up. A special thanks go to Mrs Joan Tod-hunter and Rev Norman Robinson. You all made this a very special day.

The Northern Fells Group Village Agents’ Tea Dance
The Northern Fells Group Village Agents’ Tea Dance to celebrate the International
Day for Older People on October 1st 2014 was held at Mungrisdale Hall and this year
organised by Philippa Groves Village Agent for Castle Sowerby & Mungrisdale. A
delicious afternoon tea was supplied by Andrew Teasdale at The Mill Inn, Mungris-
dale and served on ‘Mad Hatters’ mismatched china. Lovely table arrangements in
china teacups and saucers prepared by Barbara Stoddart, Village Agent for Rosley &
Westward adorned the tables and were later taken home by some of the dancers.
Diane Barraclough, Northern Fells Group Secretary and Village Agent Coordinator
kept the door in order along with Gail Dewis, Northern Fells Group Lend a Hand Co-
ordinator, Helen Sturges Village Agent for Caldbeck, Sebergham & Welton sold the
raffle tickets and everyone helped serve the afternoon tea under the watchful eye of
Andrews Mum, Margaret Teasdale who kept us all in order. The washing up disap-
peared quickly with a huge amount of help from Andrew and a team of helpers from
the Mill Inn who helped from plating up the tea to putting away the chairs and tables
and mopping the floors at the end of the day.
Sixty four people attended a lively afternoon with music supplied by John & Connie
Foster’s Roe Valley Band who kept people on their feet dancing for the majority of
the afternoon. Raffle prize winners were Stan Armer, John Gilbert, Cynthia Gilbert,
Hazel Grindal, Audrey Johnson, Billy McKie, Freda Scott, Mary Watson, and Doug-
las Willison.
We had just thanked everyone for coming and were saying our goodbyes when the fire
alarm set off so the afternoon ended with the Fire Brigade being called to check we
had not set the hall on fire with all those speedy feet!! Next year’s dance on Thursday
October 1st will be at Sebergham Village Hall. Philippa Groves

THURSDAY CLUB - MYSTERY TRIP
We left Caldbeck at 11.30am, travelling through Hesket Newmarket and Mungris-
dale, and joined the A66 where we turned right - to where? Well, we stopped for a
delicious lunch at Hundith Hill Hotel, followed by a lovely trip through Cocker-
mouth and towards the Solway coast at Maryport. We followed the coast through
Allonby (where an ice cream was in order!), travelling through Abbeytown, Silloth,
Kirkbride, and finally Wigton, on our way home.
We all enjoyed our lovely day and our grateful thanks go to Mr Tyson who drove the
bus.
Hesket Newmarket Play Area Association
Annual General Meeting The AGM of the Association will be
held on Monday, 3 November
at Denton House, courtesy of Alan and Sue Arm-
strong, commencing at 7.30pm.
It will be followed by a short
committee meeting. Anyone who lives locally is welcome to attend the AGM
THURSDAY CLUB
At the October meeting Mr Tony Ryan wel-
comed members who had braved the bad
weather before asking Rosemary Bailey to
introduce this month’s speaker, Mr Mick
Guy, with his dog from Keswick Mountain
Rescue. Helped by a film presentation, he
gave us an insight into the nature of the
lengthy training of the dogs and the regular
commitment of their handlers who developed
such extraordinary skills in their charges.
We were indeed grateful to Rosemary for
finding the speaker who kept us enthralled
for an hour.
At the meeting next month, 13 November, Dr
Natalie Hawkrigg will discuss the future of
the National Health Service, doom and
gloom?

NORTHERN FELLS GROUP Thank you to everyone who made Mosedale Coffee Shop at the Quaker Meeting
House, Mosedale, such a success again this year, the ninth year we have run the
coffee shop there.
We made a profit of £3913.59, £500 less than last year, we think due to fewer
visitors this year. But it is still a wonderful result and is thanks to the teamwork
by all fifty volunteers: the bakers of cakes and biscuits, the soup makers and the
coffee shop helpers. The volunteers came from all corners of our seven parishes,
as did the Bric a Brac donated to the barn, and the art and craft work from local
artists and authors.

Caldbeck & District Local History Society
‘Beatrix Potter: Writer, Artist and Philanthropist’
Dr David Cross, art historian, lecturer and author, was the speaker at the Sep-
tember meeting of the Caldbeck & District Local History Society, and his illus-
trated presentation was entitled ‘Beatrix Potter: Writer, Artist and Philanthro-
pist’.
Beatrix was born in South Kensington in 1866 to “very comfortably-off’ parents (who
were both artistically talented) and was educated by three able governesses. She and
her brother kept numerous small pets at home, and in their holidays in Perthshire and
the Lake District were allowed great freedom to follow their enthusiasm for the natu-
ral world.
Dr Cross described Beatrix’s maturing artistic and intellectual abilities, and the people
who influenced her development. Her later well-known children’s books were to
show not only her outstanding drawing ability, but her great wit, imagination and at-
tention to architectural detail.
She also became interested in almost every branch of natural science and in the 1890s
her illustrations and research on fungi generated considerable interest from the scien-
tific establishment.
Having developed an enthusiasm for conservation of the landscape and for vernacular
architecture, in 1905 she bought Hill Top farm, Near Sawrey, in the Lake District.
Over the following decades, she acquired additional farms and land, with the aim of
helping to preserve the unique landscape of the area.
In addition, she was to become interested in Herdwick sheep; and later, as one of the
major sheep farmers of the area, reared a prize-winning flock. In 1942, she was the
first female president-elect of the Herdwick Sheep Breeders’ Association but sadly
died in 1943 before taking office (leaving almost all her property to the National
Trust).
With regard to her private life, Dr Cross told how in 1905 Beatrix became unofficially
engaged to Norman Warne, the son of her publisher, but the engagement lasted only a
month, before he died of leukaemia at the age of 37. However, in her late 40s she
married local solicitor William Heelis, to whom she was happily married for thirty
years.
Dr Cross said that, unfortunately, there was not sufficient time that evening to do jus-
tice to many important aspects of her later life, including her charitable and philan-
thropic work.
The meeting was chaired by the Society’s president John Price, who also thanked the
speaker for his informative and enjoyable talk.
The next meeting of the Society will be a presentation by Ian Tyler on ‘Cross Fell &
Mines of the Pennines’ at Caldbeck Parish Hall on 19th November at 7.30 pm. Mem-
bers £2; Visitors £3. Refreshments included. Everyone is welcome!

Concerts in Caldbeck I’m sure those of you who were at the October concert given by the Carducci String Quartet thoroughly enjoyed it. They were excellent, and appreciated the welcome they received. I am able to squeeze in one more concert in 2014. It will be at 3.0 pm on Sunday December 7th in Caldbeck Parish Hall. Tickets will be £10, under 16s £5. (I regret that this time there will be no re-duction for Solway Arts members). The concert will be given by the world-famous dynamic Red Priest. They play everything from memory and are completely unique. They were founded in 1997, and are named after the flame-haired priest Antonia Vivaldi. They comprise Piers Adams, recorders, Julia Bishop, violin, Angela East, cello, and David Wright, harpsichord. They have given several hun-dred concerts at many of the world’s prestigious festivals, including Hong Kong, Moscow, Prague and Bermuda and have given concerts in most Euro-pean countries, Japan, Australia, and throughout North and South America. Piers Adams was recently heralded in the Washington Post as “the reigning recorder virtuoso in the world today”. He has made several solo CDs and has researched, arranged and recorded many classical, romantic, impres-sionist and folk-related showpieces. Julia Bishop is one of the outstanding baroque violinist specialists of her generation and has toured the world with most of the U.K’s leading period instrument orchestras, including the English Concert. Angela East is widely respected as one of the most brilliant and dynamic performers in the period instrument world, praised for the elemental power of her cello playing. David Wright is a brilliant harpsichord player and has a huge amount of television and radio broadcasts to his credit. Their programme at Caldbeck is entitled ‘Handel in the Wind’ and will include sonatas, an audacious suite drawn from his most famous work ‘Messiah’. Interspersed will be music by Vivaldi, J.S. Bach and C.P.E. Bach. This will be a completely new programme, specially for Caldbeck. I have heard them before, and they are utterly spellbinding, with a style all their own. We are fortunate that they want to come to Caldbeck and this is a once-in-a –lifetime chance to hear them. Please contact me for any further details Eric Wright, 016974 78001

NORTHERN FELLS GROUP AGM REPORT The AGM of the Northern Fells Group held on 10th September marked the end of an era
with the retirement as Chairman and Trustee of Dr. Jim Cox. Dr. Cox set up the North-
ern Fells Group 15 years ago with the support of HRH the Prince of Wales, and was
completing his second term as Chairman. Dr. Cox explained that he was not standing for
re-election because the Group is in exceptionally good health, doing what it sets out to
do – and more.
He went on to thank the volunteers, trustees, officers and staff of the Group, including
HRH the Prince of Wales whose support was instrumental in launching the Group, and
Malcolm Threlkeld, the previous Chairman. He concluded with a personal thank you to
Antoinette Ward who agreed to become the first Group Coordinator and has been ac-
tively involved ever since, having now achieved the status of ‘guru’ for the Group. He
will continue as a minibus driver, the Group being in the process of replacing its current
vehicle.
Jenny Bland was elected at the meeting as his successor, having served as Vice Chair for
the previous two years. She thanked Dr. Cox for his contribution to the Group, and said
she was deeply honoured and delighted to take on the role. Geoff Hine was elected as
Vice Chair.
The AGM also saw the announcement of the winner of the ‘Minibus Mystery Trail’
competition, which has had people in the area who bought a quiz sheet puzzled for the
last few months. The trail was devised by trustee Peter Huntington to raise funds for the
replacement of the Group’s minibus this year. Pictures were taken in each of the seven
Northern Fells Group parishes, and participants had to identify the place, the parish and
work out the number of miles Peter travelled between them. The top three entries were
all correct, and the competition was decided on the mileage tiebreaker, with the winner
being Richard Brough of Caldbeck. His prize is Sunday lunch for two donated by
Denton House, Hesket Newmarket. The trail was sponsored by Kirkland Stores, Cald-
beck.
The Group’s 2015 calendar was launched at the AGM, and is now available to buy at
local shops, and at Caldbeck Surgery. A community photography competition was held
and the title was ‘my favourite view’. The winning entries were submitted by local ama-
teur photographers Sue Braithwaite, Alan Charlton, Jefferey J.Clarke, John Honeyman,
Malcolm Riches and Sue Thomas, and the overall winner was Roy Knowles of Hesket
Newmarket. His prize is a £25 voucher donated by The Image Unit, a photography so-
cial enterprise based in Carlisle.
STOP PRESS: The subject of the 2016 Calendar Photography Competition, as
voted for by the 2015 winning photographers is:
‘Events and Happenings in the area covered by the Northern Fells Group’.

September 2014
Rainfall.
September 2014. 012.40 mm (00.49 ins)
Aggregate for year 682.60 mm (26.88 ins)
September 2013. 070.44 mm (02.77 ins)
Aggregate for year 652.00 mm (25.87 ins)
Notes.
Exceptionally low rainfall has meant that September was the driest since our re-
cords began in 1965. The last year in which we had a very low rainfall in Sep-
tember was 1996 when we recorded 049.00 mm (1.93 ins) for the month. Our
wettest September was in 2012 when we recorded 165.10 mm (6.50 ins). We only
recorded rain on 6 days during the month and the rain high day was Tuesday
23rd September of 05.60 mm (00.22 ins). Also, in 1996 was our driest month
since records began which was March when we recorded 012.00 mm (00.47 ins)
only 00.40 mm less than September this year.
September temperatures 2014
Average maximum day temperature 18.34˚C (65.00˚F)
Average minimum night temperature 08.79˚C (47.82˚F)
Warmest day Thursday 04 September 21.40˚C (70.52˚F)
Coolest night Monday 08 September 03.90˚C (39.02˚F)
September temperatures 2013
Average maximum day temperature 15.99˚C (60.79˚F)
Average minimum night temperature 08.66˚C (47.58˚F)
Warmest day Wednesday 04 September 22.20˚C (71.78˚F)
Coolest night Sunday 08 September 04.40˚C (39.92˚F)
Notes.
September was warmer than August this year for only the fifth time in the past
century, according to the Met Office. Day time temperatures averaged 18.34°C
(65.00°F) in September after an unusually cold, wet August when the average
temperature was 17.37°C (63.27°F). It is interesting to see that our warmest Sep-
tember day was on Thursday 04 which was the same September day last year,
2013. We might enjoy complaining about the weather, as we had every chance to
do during the unprecedented storms of last winter, but for once let us enjoy and
be happy with our summer and then the 'Indian Summer!'
Wind.
The average wind speed for September was 1.0 mph and we recorded a high on
Friday 26th September of 24 mph from the W at 08.00 hrs. The dominant wind
direction for August was from the W being the dominant direction for last five
months. September has been a quiet month.

Notes from Caldbeck Parish Council meeting of 15th September Residents Diane Rushworth and Maureen Allen spoke regarding the 73/73A Stage-
coach Bus service, the immediate threat to its continuation because the County
Council is stopping its subsidy, its value to both the local community and to visi-
tors, and their efforts to publicise the bus more widely, efforts already resulting
in an increase of passengers. The Chairman commended them for their work on
behalf of the community, thanked them for the information they gave and said
the 73/73A service would be discussed as an agenda item. The bus was dis-
cussed by Councillors and it was agreed that the Clerk should write to the other
affected parishes to ask what action could be taken and to ask them to publicise
the service while it is still running, write to Stagecoach and ask if the bus could
be kept running until Christmas to see if more people could be alerted to its use-
fulness and the bus might become commercially viable, write to Cumbria
County Council and ask if they might continue a temporary subsidy until Christ-
mas, to see if with publicity the number of passengers might increase, liaise with
residents who are publicising the bus and increasing its passengers, write to
Rory Stewart MP, explain the current situation, thank him for his support and
ask for his help with publicity when the time is judged right.
Results of Bus Survey. Thank you to those who completed forms. The Clerk
reported on the results (full report available from the Clerk). She concluded that
it was very clear that people look to different towns as their main destination and
different people have connections and preferences for shopping, appointments,
visiting family or onward travel in different towns. It was also clear that a bus is
vital to residents. But if we had to choose a town for a community bus in the
event of losing all our buses, taking both first and second preferences into ac-
count, Carlisle would be the overall preferred destination.
Proposed footpath along Hesket Lonning. The Clerk reported that the first meet-
ing of the Working Group (Chairman Norman Atkinson, Councillors Alan Ty-
son, Colin Smithson, LDNP Rangers Pete Barron and Cath Johnson, and resi-
dent Tim Cartmell, Clerk in attendance) was booked for 29th September.

CALDBECK & DISTRICT GARDENING CLUB
‘Contained Acer Trees in the Garden’
The 10th year of the Gardening Club opened on 10 September with 23 members and
guests listening to a talk on ‘Contained Acer Trees in the Garden’ given by Steve Valen-
tine from Shap. Steve is a ceramic artist and a landscaper, having trained at Newton
Rigg College. He is passionate about acers (perhaps better known as Japanese Maples)
having collected these for 23 years.
An enthusiastic Steve informed us that acers have year round interest and are ideal for
growing in containers where in a small garden or patio you can enjoy the varied display
of these trees. In winter the colour of the bark intensifies as spring approaches. In spring
the fresh buds contrast with the bark. Summer the leaves provide a pleasing mix of dap-
pled shade and sun. It is in the autumn that acers produce their final swansong of fiery,
striking leaf colour. Steve showed us many slides of the acers he has in containers in-
cluding several in pots he has created himself.
Acers like acidic soil conditions and so need to be grown in ericaceous compost, well
drained but kept moist. They need to be protected from harsh, drying winds and, in pro-
longed frost Steve suggested wrapping the container with ‘bubble wrap’.
There are an immense number of varieties having a wide range of leaf and bark colour-
ing. Examples include, deep lobed purple leaves (‘Bloodgood’), green leaves turning
yellow (‘Sango-Kanu or Coral bark maple), fiery scarlet autumn leaves (‘Osakazuki’),
and deep purple leaves turning crimson (‘Nigrum’ or Black Japanese maple). There are
many others and it is well worth checking out what is available.
All in all, container grown Japanese maples will provide great variety of colour and tex-
ture, and many grow to a height of no more than 2.5 to 3.5 metres.

Everyone was welcomed by Mrs P Shaw and the Minutes were read by Mrs P
Richardson. The County News was read and we were informed that the annual
subscription will increase to £36.
After the business meeting, Mrs Shaw welcomed our speakers for the evening,
Rosemary Bailey and Trish Mansbridge, who had come to talk about red squir-
rels and who showed us a film with both the red and grey varieties. They ex-
plained that, although we do have red squirrels in this area, greys have also been
seen, and we need to be vigilant in order to protect the reds. Mrs Bridget Archer
thanked Rosemary and Trish for their interesting talk.
The competition for an autumn fruit was won by Bridget Archer, and Dorothy
Coulthard won the draw.
