Your Priest–in-Charge Writes
Dear friends,
Thomas was one of the hand-picked twelve chosen by Jesus to be taught by him during
his three and half years of public teaching and ministry. His name means “the twin” but
we do not know who his twin was whether boy or girl. Because of an incident at the
close of John’s gospel he has traditionally been called “doubting Thomas.” However,
after the dramatic encounter with the risen Christ Thomas became a missionary to In-
dia. He probably followed trade routes which were strong in relation to Israel in the
first century. By the time that 13th century travellers from the west arrived in India they
found already well-established Christian communities on the coasts of South India and
Ceylon or Sri Lanka as we now call it. This Mar Toma Church claimed to have been
founded by St. Thomas.
We do not know where he was the first time Jesus appeared to his disciples behind
their locked doors. Perhaps in the aftermath of his beloved master’s death he was
gripped by the first stages of a deep depression. What’s the point of the future without
the hope and sense of purpose that came with Jesus around doing stuff? Often such
people want to crawl away and be alone. When he heard all their talk about Jesus being
alive again he rejected it instantly as a load of old cobblers. He knew that no one but no
one escaped death. I reckon he felt like someone wounded by shrapnel on a battlefield.
The whole tragedy of the cross had suddenly exploded right in front of his eyes. His
fear had opened his spirit to despair, doubt and active unbelief. So he had built a wall
around himself to protect himself and the trickle of emotions still left inside him.
The second time Jesus appeared Thomas was there and Jesus straightaway went over to
him and showed him close up his hands and side with the nail and spear marks visible.
Jesus was, as it were, knocking gently but firmly upon the barrier Thomas had put up
between himself and others. With an amazed gasp of wonderment Thomas opened the
barrier to Jesus by saying in a kneeling position, “My Lord, and my God.” In that won-
derful spiritual allegory Pilgrim’s Progress, John Bunyan describes how Christian and
his companion Hope stray from the way into the grounds of Doubting Castle. Here they
fall asleep to be awakened by Giant Despair who leads them into his dungeon in the
castle. Doubt can become a powerful force in some people’s lives that can lock them
into many chains of fear and loss of hope for the future. The holy pair in Bunyan’s
story escaped when Christian suddenly remembers that he had been given a key that
was hanging around his neck. This key was called Promise and as they took it to the
cell door it opened to them along with all the other doors in Doubting Castle.
This wonderful story reminds those who are followers of the Way of Jesus that we have
been given promises from God that can help us in our difficulties. Thomas’ prison
doors sprang open as he moved out of his shadows into the sunlit presence of the risen
Lord Jesus. His first act there was worship, giving Jesus his true worth. From now on
he would serve his Lord on this act of faith and worship wherever it might lead him
even to the ends of the earth. Thomas’ story instead of reinforcing doubt or negativity
about what happens in our lives and our world, becomes instead an occasion of hope
and praise to the real presence of Jesus alive today. After all he has given us this prom-
ise, “Behold, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” May we live this
promise out in our lives this Easter season and beyond.
Every blessing Norman

It is the list of those qualified to vote at the Annual Parochial Church Meeting, where elections take place for the Parochial Church Council (PCC) and the parish's representatives on the Deanery Synod. Every six years the old church electoral roll is deleted and a new one prepared. 2013 is the year for revision. The Rambler. (for Pentecost) Tom Paxton’s on the radio.
I love his gentle songs.
He sings of trains, and urban life,
As well as rights and wrongs.
He sings about the countryside,
Of a strange and a mystic toy,
But most of all, he sings about
A special rambling boy.
A fellow, free of spirit,
Who moved from town to town
Who walked the plains, and mountains
Where roads run up and down.
The weather didn’t bother him,
The sun. The rain. The snow.
He had a sense of purpose,
As on and on he’d go.
Now Jesus was a rambler
Or so it seems to me.
Walking from Judea
To the wilds of Galilee
Here and there. Samaria
And old Jerusalem
Back and forth from Jericho
To little Bethlehem;
Only stopping briefly
For a humble place to rest
Putting all those Pharisees
And sceptics to the test.
Always on the move, He was
For three long, active years
Until one fateful Passover
Which ended up in tears.
The only time His freedom
Was really at a loss
Was when they took our rambling Lord
And nailed Him to the cross.
But Resurrection sorted all
The bloodshed and the pain
And now our Pentecostal Christ
Is on the road again
Rambling right beside us
As we go on our way
Through every lonely winter night
And every single day.

CALDBECK WI MARCH MEETING Everyone was welcomed to the March meeting by Mrs P Shaw who ex-
plained that the business meeting would be held after the Heartstart ses-
sion. She then introduced Mrs Philippa Groves who had come to lead the
Heartstart session assisted by Mrs Shaw who has become an instructor
for Heartstart. Mrs Groves explained that Caldbeck Area First Respond-
ers had been awarded Gold CardiacSmart Status which is a wonderful
achievement. The session comprised videos and practical sessions in-
cluding CPR, choking, bleeding and how to use an external automated
defibrillator (AED). It was extremely interesting and useful, enabling
members to feel more confident in an emergency situation and it was a
good feeling to go home with a certificate to prove that we had spent our
evening learning something that could save a life. Mrs Shaw thanked
Mrs Groves for taking time to come and pass on her skills in such an ef-
fective way.
The business meeting followed and the minutes from the last meeting
were read and approved. The County News was read. The Spring Coun-
cil meeting will be held on 18 May when ideas for the WI county banner
will be shown.
The competition for a heart shaped object was won by Mrs K Davie and
the raffle was won by Mrs J Todhunter.

February 2012. 43.20 mm (1.70 ins)
Aggregate for year 121.30 mm (4.77 ins)
Notes.
February is usually a dry month and this year is no exception as our ten year average
rainfall for the month is 55.27 mm (2.18 ins) so you will see that both last year and
this year our monthly rainfall has been below average. It is very difficult to predict
how the year will turn out as 2012 was our wettest year yet recorded. Our driest
February was 2009 at 20.10 mm (0.79 ins) and our wettest February was 2002 at
227.10 mm (8.94 ins) and for both these years the total rainfall was high and similar,
averaging 1l43 mm (45 ins). We recorded rain/snow on ten days during the month
and snow lay for two days. The rain high day was Wednesday 13 February at
019.00mm (0.75ins)
February temperatures 2013
Average maximum day temperature 06.16°C (4 3.08°F)
Average minimum night temperature 00.17°C (32.31°F)
Warmest day Thursday 28 February 11.30°C (52.34°F)
Coolest night Wednesday 27 February -4.60°C (23.72°F)
February temperatures 2012
Average maximum day temperature 07.43 °C (43.37°F)
Average minimum night temperature 03.26°C (37.87°F)
Warmest day Thursday 23 February 12.50°C ((54.50°F)
Coolest night Thursday 2 February..-4.90°C (23.18°F)
Notes.
You will see from the recordings above that February this year was colder than last
year, especially the night time temperature. Apart from February 2010 which was
our coldest recorded February, this year has been our the average taken over ten
years. There were 15 days during the month when we recorded air frost.
Wind.
The average wind speed for January was 2.4 mph and we recorded a high on Monday
4 February of 43 mph from the SE at 15.30 hrs. The dominant wind direction for the
month was from the SSE. February 20I2 the wind average speed was higher than this
year but from the SW.

FAIRTRADE NEWS
Despite the snowy weather, about 50 people attended the Fairtrade Coffee
Morning at St. Kentigern’s Church, Caldbeck on Saturday 9th March to cele-
brate Fairtrade Fortnight. Although this was primarily an awareness-raising
event to highlight the importance of supporting farmers and producers every-
where, £210 was raised which will be shared between the Church and Caldbeck
and Hesket Newmarket Fairtrade Group .
As well as Fairtrade refreshments, including home-made Fairtrade traybakes,
there were a variety of stalls selling Fairtrade and locally made foods and crafts
including Absalom Jewellers, The Fairworld Shop, Caldbeck, Jill’s Jams, Victo-
ria’s of Penrith, The Watermill Cafe, Caldbeck, a Fairtrade cake stall and a
Coop stand, illustrating the range of FT foods sold by the Coop. There was also
a Fairtrade Chocolate Cake competition.
Thanks to all those who manned the stalls, donated crafts and cakes and served
refreshments – Barbara Riches, Betty Brame, Rachel Nicholson, Carole Mar-
sters, Chris Smith, Jill and Miriam Johnston, Joan Todhunter, Penny Bird,
Ruth Strong, Sally Vaux, Susan and David Beale, and David and Tracey Absa-
lom. Thanks also to Isobel Coulthard for judging the cake competition, Mal-
colm Riches for taking photos (see Church and Caldbeck website), Margaret
and Richard Brough and to the Cooperative Society for generously sponsoring
the event. Finally thanks to all those who came to support the event.

CAFS REPORT FOR APRIL 2013
The days may be getting lighter but April’s film is a thrilling piece of Nor-
dic Noir. The last film in the season is Headhunters showing on Fri 19th
April at 7.30pm in Caldbeck Village Hall. The film lasts 101mins, is Cert
15, made in Norway and subtitled. The plot is based on a Jo Nesbo novel
and is something of a black comedy with thrills in it and which asks the
question “Does size matter?”
Roger is a suave corporate headhunter, who has a beautiful, tall, high
maintenance wife and a secret hobby, stealing works of art. At her gallery
show, his wife introduces him to Clas, the secret owner of a Rubens and
Roger cannot resist the chance of stealing the painting. But Clas is an ex-
special forces operator and Roger finds he has perhaps taken on more than
he bargained for. There follows a chase so gruelling that you can’t help
feeling sorry for Roger as he tries to make his escape. The suspense is kill-
ing for some of those involved and you will hold your breath during some
of the scenes.
CAFS would like to thank our volunteer projectionists Malcolm Riches,
Jeff Wilson and Roy Knowles, who have managed to overcome some tech-
nical problems this season. Thanks also to Sally, Maureen and Janet for
serving the coffee and biscuits at the end of the films.
At this last film, please suggest films for next season to the CAFS
Committee.

Caldbeck Area First Responders are proud to have achieved Gold CardiacSmart Status!
The local community covered by Caldbeck Area First Responders will be pleased to hear that we are making the area a safer and healthier place as we have achieved a CardiacSmart Gold award.
The CardiacSmart award recognises organisations and individuals whether it is local businesses, schools, health providers, community groups or sporting associations, for their dedication to raising awareness of heart health, basic life support and defibrillators in their local communities and the impact it has had.
The initiative has been created by the North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust (NWAS) and The British Heart Foundation. It follows the same princi-ples as the Chain of Survival Partnership which works to extend the network of available Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) to improve access to them for people who suffer cardiac arrest outside hospital in the North West. It also aims to boost the amount of people trained in basic life support so that they have the potential to save a life!
Caldbeck Area First Responders have had to fulfil a series of criteria to gain our Gold CardiacSmart award which looks at many aspects of our work in relation to recognising community resilience, supporting innovation and be-ing responsive to our community’s needs.
Around 30,000 people suffer cardiac arrest outside of hospital each year in the UK, and with every minute a person does not receive treatment, their chances of survival decreases by ten per cent.
Cardiac arrest is the most extreme case of an emergency, as the patient loses consciousness at once and there are no signs of life. Defibrillators give an electric shock through the chest wall and help to restore a normal heart-beat.
Philippa Groves Team Leader of Caldbeck Area First Responders, said: “Thanks to the training we have received from NWAS we really are increas-ing the chances of survival for anybody using our facilities who suffers a car-diac arrest. We have 14 defibrillators in our team including three public ac-cess defibrillators (cPADs) in the area through fund-raising and have 20 trained First Responders and eight Heartstart Instructors who have in turn trained over 3.000 people in North Cumbria over the last four years in basic life support and we will continue to raise awareness of how important im-proving access to a defibrillator is in local communities.”
“Our award will be proudly displayed at several places in the area for all to see and is testament to the work that our volunteers have put into making Caldbeck Area a healthier place for its residents to live and work in.”
For more information on how we achieved CardiacSmart status please con-tact Philippa Groves 016974 78555
For more information on the CardiacSmart initiative, defibrillators, educa-tional resources and news/events please visit www.cardiacsmart.nwas.nhs.uk.

SEBERGHAM
SEBERGHAM WI REPORT, FEBRUARY 2013
President, Nancy Hullock, welcomed everyone plus visitor, Hilary Duncan. The
business meeting was short. Invitations were read out from Cummersdale and
Ivegill WI’s.
Nancy Hullock introduced our speaker, Paul Cookson, from The Eden Valley
Hospice and Eden House. Paul explained the history of the formation of the first
Hospice in 1967 as a calm place where patients in the final stages of life would
receive palliative care and pain control.
During the early 1980s an appeal was launched to fund a hospice in Cumbria. In
1990 some land was donated and the Eden Valley Hospice was built. In 1991 the
first day care patient visited and in 1992 the first in-patient was admitted. By
1998 children with life limiting illnesses were also being cared for. Now the
Hospice has 12 adult beds and 5 children’s beds, with facilities for 10 adults and 6
children coming in for day care.
We were shown a film made by the staff at the Hospice with the children playing
and enjoying music. The smiles radiated from the faces of these children and
showed how much they obviously enjoyed the care they received. The recreational
facilities are very important to the children. Working there must be a mixture of
happiness and heartbreak.
The Hospice has 450 volunteers working, either at the Hospice, in the shops, or
involved in other fund raising. It costs over £400 a day for a patient to be there
and the Hospice needs to raise over £5000 a day to cover the costs. The wages
alone are £2m pounds a year. Funding comes from donations, legacies, grants, the
shop, the special Hospice lottery and some NHS funding.
It was a very informative and interesting talk and explained to us what a wonder-
ful place the Hospice is and made us realize how lucky we are that we have a hos-
pice in Carlisle.
Macmillan Nurses and The
Hospice at Home are also run
from there in Carlisle.
During refreshments Paul
judged the competition of a
photograph of a child. This
was won by Audrey As-
bridge, with Doreen Ward
second.

FELLVIEW SCHOOL NEWS MARCH 2013
Years 3 and 4 have been attending swimming lessons at Richard Rose
(Central) swimming pool. They are working towards the appropriate
swimming badges. Years 5 and 6 have received cricket coaching from a
local coach. The After School Club this half term is geared towards the
County Gymnastics final at the end of March. The children look the part
in their newly acquired leotards for the girls and shorts and tops for the
boys. Friends of Fellview have kindly donated the money to pay for these.
The highlight of the term has been the Music and Art Week. We made as
many of the activities cross curricular whilst studying artists such a Bridget
Riley, Paul Klee, Jane Mackey and Kandinsky, learning how music in-
spired their painting. The children produced their own paintings in the
style of these artists as well as composing instrumental works using sym-
bols and colours to indicate musical notation and instrumentation. Years 5
and 6 wrote stories about the R, Y1 and Y2 paintings. We also listened to
pieces of music, such as Pictures at an Exhibition and Years 3,4,5 and 6
used Mussorgsky’s titles and their imagination to paint their own pictures
for the Art Gallery. Years 3 and 4 also listened to the second movement of
Beethoven’s Pastoral Symphony, describing the musical effects by writing
a story. All in all, the week proved to be very popular with both staff and
pupils. Some of our Governors came into school to help with the work and
talk to the children about their topic week.
Many of our children receive piano, brass and guitar tuition. They have
participated in music exams and have obtained excellent grades in these.
Our next Community Lunch is on 7th May. Members of the commu-
nity are most welcome to join us. The cost is £4.50 for a two course
lunch followed by tea/coffee and biscuits. Please contact school to
book.
