Within the performances of Keroncong Surakarta Festival, you’ll listen to Portuguese-inspired traditional music played by an ukulele-like instrument. The keroncong ensemble, called a keroncong orchestra, consists of flute, violin, melody guitar, cello in pizzicato style, string bass in pizzicato style, and a female or male singer. Annually, the renowned Keroncong Surakarta Festival hopes to preserve traditional keroncong as Indonesia’s identity and heritage. The two-day festival features many keroncong subgenres, including pure keroncong, and keroncong rock.

Situated at an altitude of 1,600 meters, the great Baliem Valley holds Dani, Yali, and Lani Tribes. These tribes are direct survivors from the Stone Age. Every year, the three tribes held a ritual in the form of a small-scale war called the Baliem Valley Festival where warriors of the tribes throw spears to each other, accompanied by distinctive war cries of Dani people.
