Dear Friends,
On Saturday April 21 at 10:00 am we will have our annual “Blessing of the
Animals.” On Sunday, April 22 Earth Day will be celebrated and observed.
What a great way to connect with the blessing of God’s creation as we
celebrate our relationship with our pets, who bless and have blessed our lives
with joy, love, companionship and faithfulness. Possibly the closest connection we have with God’s
creation on a daily basis is through our pets. Literally and symbolically they represent the caring
relationship required of us as stewards or caretakers of the gift of God’s creation.
We feed them, nurture them, and attend to their medical needs while inviting them into our
personal lives and our families as full-fledged members and trusted friends, often depending upon
them as they depend upon us, for companionship. Our lives would be empty without them.
What if, as we gaze upon and over the gift of God’s creation, we pause to consider our
responsibility as stewards and or caretakers of that which God has gifted us? And what if we
consider modeling our relationship to creation in the same way that we care for our pets? The
creation is ours not to dominate or exploit, but to bless, celebrate, nurture, worry and fret over,
while seeking the best for it.
We would never choose to intentionally harm our pets. Why would we choose to intentionally harm
or devastate the earth? We are concerned about what our pets eat, that is what we feed them,
wanting always to assure what they receive from our hands is healthy and ultimately will strengthen,
not harm them. Why would we not want the same for creation: that is choosing not to harm it by
what we dump into it, spray upon or it, build upon it. We would not poison our pets, polluting their
lives with substandard food or resources so why would we choose to do so to God’s creation. If you
are like me, you are always on the watch for your pet, taking care to notice any changes in health or
demeanor that could adversely affect him or her.
They key is relationship. We are related to the creation and the creation is related to us. We are one
with one another. The Bible is clear on that fact. Yet we treat this gift of God as something to
dominate over rather than nurture and care for, without often considering the impact our choices
will ultimately have on the health and well- being of it in its soil, its waters, its foliage, its air, and
ultimately upon the divine gifts wrapped in flesh, you and me and our neighbors.
As we gather to celebrate the Blessing of the Animals on April 21 let us
consider, as we also celebrate Earth Day on April 22, how we are called as
stewards and caretakers over those gifts of God and ultimately over all the
creation which God has entrusted to our care.
Yours in Christ’s service,
John Mya Moody
The ark in the Genesis flood narrative was how God “remembered all the wild animals
and all the domestic animals” (Gen. 8:1). Today in the United States, the Endangered
Species Act serves as the “Noah’s ark” of our time, ensuring protection for creatures in
peril. We are called to be mindful of all creatures, and to take stock of their presence.
Let’s join together on Saturday, April 21 at 10 a.m. to celebrate our special
relationship with God’s creatures. Bring your animal companion, a picture or stuffed toy
of an animal for which you want a blessing. In a short service of word and song, we will
honor these creatures of our planet. Meet in the lower parking lot. Invite family and
friends.
Earth Day Sunday Services (April 22) will honor God’s creation with a special animal
companion representative for blessing.
Please see the bulletin board in the narthex, and pick up a special bookmark.
The fate of humans and the fate of the animals are the same: as one dies so does the other; both have the same breath.”

welcome Dr. Ricardo De Mambro Santos, professor of art history
at Willamette and guest curator at Hallie Ford Museum of Art. He
will lecture on the collection of Northern Renaissance prints
discovered in a 1629 Book of Common Prayer, bringing rich insights regarding the
historical and theological contexts of this Reformation-era artwork.
Note: The Book and prints are on display at Hallie Ford until April 29!

Once again, Westminster - and many of our neighbors - made a fine showing at the March 27th Blood Drive. Our goal was 27 pints, and we ended at 28! As Pauline Mather, our hard-working organizer put it, “Every single person who gave blood can claim THEY were the one who put us over our goal!” BRAVO, and see you at the next Blood Drive.

¡Hola! Our next Dinner for Eight is scheduled for
Saturday, May 5. While it isn’t necessary to carry on with a Cinco de Mayo theme, it might be kind of fun to think about, especially if you are interested in hosting a get-together.
Sign-ups sheets will be posted in the narthex beginning April 15 and going through Sunday, April 29, so you have lots of time to get it on your calendars.
This is a great way to meet and mingle with Westminster people you might not see often if you attend different services on Sundays. And, as always, sin-gles are welcome, as well as couples. If you have questions about attending or hosting, contact: Susan Ray at 503-689-1179 or [email protected].

Fellowship Committee is looking for a few good men (and women)!
Looking for ways to get involved with Westminster? Come and join the Fellowship Committee. We are the folks who plan social events for our church family. Some of the things we plan/organize include:
Dinner for Eight (3 X per year) The All-Church Picnic Helping the Deacons with the Unity Brunch Westminster Night at Volcano Stadium Coffee Hour between services on Sundays Most of our work is done in the summertime, so that leaves most of the rest of the year free. We do many meetings via
email-conferencing, so we don’t have to be out too many nights. You do NOT need to be a member of the church to be on our committee.
We would love to have some younger Westminster folks involved with new ideas for fellowship. That would include family-friendly activities, as well. INTERESTED?
