Christian Education news

Aperture: Third WednesdaysChallenging the Narrative: Desegregation, Disintegration, and Our Shared Destinywith Brian McDonald, Author of Not the End, But theBeginning: The Impact of Race and Class on the Historyof Jordan High School, 1963-1988

Wednesday, January 15, 6:30pm l Music Room

Through this discussion, McDonald examines key events in history, placing them in a much larger, much needed context. Emphasis is placed not only on the larger Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s, but also on local history through the use of Charles E. Jordan High School as a case study for pitfalls and possibilities. McDonald suggests a new way forward.

Brian McDonald has been a teacher in the Social Studies department at Jordan High School for almost twenty years. He is also an adjunct professor in the education program at Duke University. Mr. McDonald is a frequent speaker on issues regarding race, class, poverty, education, teaching, and service. He has received numerous awards in education throughout his teaching career.

Drop-ins are welcome!

Community News & Opportunities

Pop-Up Volunteer Need!Families Moving Forward is seeking volunteers to help drive their families to and from their 3rd Annual Branching Out Aftercare Holiday Party on Thursday, December 19. The party is from 6:00-8:00pm at McMannen United Methodist Church (4102 Neal Rd, Durham). Even if you can only drive one way, that would still be very helpful! This is the event where the stockings we prepared for Christ the King Sunday will be given out. If you can help, please contact Caroline Averitt at [email protected].

News from Camp New HopeRegistration for Summer Camp opened on November 17, and registrations are already coming in. Why wait? Take advantage of the one-time year-end discount of $50 for one session at camp and register now! We are very excited about our 2020 summer season filled with new adventures and new friends.

Intersession camps are available for children in K-6th grade. Sign up now for our Winter Intersession Camp from December 16–20. Journey to the South Pole and build an igloo and search for penguins. Build a winter bird feeder, and make slime, snowflakes, and a melting snowman!

We opened additional teacher workdays to accommodate families: Monday December 23, Thursday January 2, and Friday January 3.

Register online for Intersession Camps and Teacher Workdays at www.newhopeccc.org or send an email to [email protected]

Camp New Hope will soon begin hiring for summer staff positions: counselors, specialty counselors, counselors-in-training, and lifeguards. Applications will go live on the website before the year's end.

As the end of the year approaches, please consider making a tax-deductible donation to our scholarship program. The need to support low income families within the area has increased. Your donation would help make summer camp a possibility for a child who may have only dreamed of attending. Thank you!

For 43 years, "Share Your Christmas" has provided holiday gifts to some of our most vulnerable Durham neighbors. This program is coordinated by the Durham County Department of Social Services and Triangle Nonprofit and Volunteer Leadership Center. This year Westminster has committed to serving 130 people.

Please stop by the Share Your Christmas table in the Courtyard before or after services on December 1 to view the names, ages, and wish list items, and to sign up. You may also visit the Mission Center during regular business hours to sign up. Recommended spending is $65 minimum per individual.

Please return wrapped gifts to the Mission Center by December 9, at 4:00pm. Be sure to place all gift receipts in an envelope inside each gift, and attach the name and case number securely onto the outside of each gift.

If you'd like to help with logistics for this mission (staffing the signup table, sorting and/or delivering gifts, etc.), please sign up at http://bit.ly/2019syc.

Update on Fellowship Hall ConstructionBy Dana Lange, Building Committee Chair

Westminster friends, I know we have been talking about the Fellowship Hall project for nearly seven years, but I'm happy to announce that last week the footings were poured so now we're going to begin to SEE a new Fellowship Hall.

More good news: Last week we finished clearing the space for the play field. Soon the grading will begin and sod will be laid. We need to carefully tend the play field for a few months to ensure that the grass takes root, but it will be ready for the kids those first warm days in February.

Second bit of good news: We paid off the loan on the new land, which means that as of today, we own all our land outright. For the time being, we have no debt, but that won’t last long.

Thanks to those people who have pledged to the Capital Campaign, we raised $2.27 million; $1.4 million of these pledges have been paid so far.

We have spent $650,000 of that money to pay off the land, do the improvements in the Sanctuary and other old campus projects that were necessary, pay for the architectural work on the Fellowship Hall, demolish the old Fellowship Hall and commence rebuilding.

The new building and the play field are going to cost more than the money we raised just in the capital campaign.

Thanks to Dave Pottenger and the Commitment Committee, we have secured a very favorable loan for $1 million. We hope that's all the money we'll need along with all the pledges from the Capital Campaign. The big issue is cash flow.

if everyone who made a pledge could try to pay it off soon - preferably by this summer - that would be fantastic. I know that the campaign was a three year commitment, but please consider paying at the front end of your last year or even better paying it all off this year.

If you haven’t pledged or given toward the Capital Campaign, know that it is never too late, as long as you make your pledge to the Stewardship campaign first. The new building is exciting, but it is more important that we have the money to run the church first.

The Fellowship Fall is going to bring us a new era of exciting programs we can enjoy thanks to finally having a facility to house them in. All of us are going to have the opportunity to enjoy this new space. Thanks for being such a generous community that makes this happens!

Celebrating an Achievement, Beginning a New AdventureCongratulations to Dana Lange on receiving the Food Bank of Central & Eastern NC's Hunt-Morgridge Award for more than 20 years of outstanding volunteer service. Many friends and family surprised Dana by coming to see her receive the award, including her daughter, Carter, who flew in from Boston, and her sister, who arrived from Hong Kong!

All the best to Hannah Criswell, who recently began a cake-decorating apprenticeship with Harris Teeter.

Do you have a loved one who is embarking on a new life adventure? Send an email to [email protected] so we can pray for them, and we'll share the good news with the WPC family in our next newsletter.

Planning to donate a stock Gift to WPC?If you are planning to donate gifts of stock to Westminster, please be sure to contact our business office ([email protected]) with the details of the stock that’s coming and where you’d like the money attributed (example: operating budget or capital campaign), so we can properly record your gift.

If you need instructions on how to donate stock to the church, please let us know and we’ll be happy to send you instructions for sending stock to the church. Learn more at www.wpcdurham.org/give.

Year-End Contribution GuidelinesAs you prayerfully consider end-of-year gifts, know that your consistent support is essential for our ministry here and throughout Durham. Income tax regulations specify that a check dated December 31, 2019, but physically delivered in January 2020 is deductible only on the donor’s 2020 federal tax return. Even if a donor backdates a check to read “December 31, 2019,” but gives it to the church on or after January 1, 2020, it will be considered a 2020 donation. The only exception to this rule is the case of a check that is dated, mailed, and postmarked in December 2019. The rules are summarized in the table below.

Type of Contribution

Checks written in Dec. 2019 and put in the church offering in Jan. 2020 x

Checks written and put in the church offering in Jan. 2020, but “backdated” to Dec. 2019 x

Good Things to Know: the IRA Charitable Rollover

By Anne Sherman

Hi, Westminster family! My name is Anne Sherman, and I am a second-year deacon serving on the Stewardship Committee. This committee is a good match for me because I work in the Office of Gift Planning at Duke Health. In my role at Duke, I share information with people about different ways to give to their charitable interests. One popular giving option that I discuss with people

is the Charitable IRA Rollover (or "qualified charitable distribution"), and I would like to share that information with you in the context of giving to Westminster.

Through the Charitable IRA Rollover, you can transfer a gift directly to Westminster from your IRA if you are age 70-1/2 or older. You do not have to recognize the transfer as taxable income, and you can count the amount transferred toward your required minimum distribution for the year. In order to utilize this giving option, you must be age 70 1/2 or older, must make your rollover gift from an IRA (not a 401(k) or other type of retirement plan), and your gift must be made to a public charity like Westminster. You may not roll over more than $100,000 per person from your IRA to charity under this law.

Congress made the Charitable IRA Rollover giving option permanent in 2015. Since that time, it has become a popular way for people to fulfill their philanthropic commitments. I hope this is useful information for some of you as you think about your stewardship and year-end gifts for Westminster. Questions? Feel free to contact me at [email protected] Thank you!

Needed: Vendor ReferralsDo you have a great vendor you can recommend to the church? WPC is building out a vendor list so we’ll have a strong list of vendors we can trust to perform maintenance work. If you know of a company that does a great job on plumbing, electrical, painting, IT, snow removal, or other work that the church uses, please send a recommendation to Sharon Morgan, Business Manager, at [email protected].

Early Enrollment for Toddlers & TwosWestminster School for Young Children is now accepting registrations for next year's toddler and two-year-old classes. Incoming toddlers must turn one by March 31, 2020; incoming two-year-olds must turn two by August 31, 2020. Contact the school office to register. Spread the word about this early registration period among your friends and neighbors with young children!
