Building Together For a Brighter Future
Poverty housing has multiple dimensions
in Macedonia and cannot be adequately
defined through simple parameters.
However, a basic understanding of the

According to a World Bank survey, 11 percent of households in
Macedonia are not connected to the water network, 36 percent
are not attached to the sewage network, 12 percent are without
a kitchen and 15 percent are without a toilet. Although
substandard quality dwellings have been officially estimated at
12 percent of the dwelling stock in Macedonia, it is well

BLUEPRINT FOR ADVENTURE: MACEDONIA
Meet a Habitat family
Valentina and Jovanche have
been married for 11 years. They have
twins(9), Nikola and Magdalena. From
the beginning of their married life
they have lived in the upper flat of an
old house, 32 m2, without a kitchen or
a bathroom. They have to share those
at the lower flat of the house, which
belongs to another family.
Valentina, a history professor, is ill
and requires expensive treatments
and medications. Jovanche works as a
construction engineer at Macedonian
Railways. Because of the high costs for
Valentina’s treatments and the high
interests of commercial bank credits,
they decided not to get a loan to buy
a house. They are full of hope that
with Habitat they will finally get a
