You Are What You Post
“You are what you eat.” This is a simple statement that makes simple sense. If you consume healthy food, you are generally a healthy person. If your go-to snacks are filled with sugar and other empty calories, your health is probably suffering. Recently, I read a statement that has a similar ring to this, “You are what you post.” For those of you on Facebook (FB), this resonates with you immediately. As you view your FB page seated behind the glow of your computer or the smart phone in your hand, you make choices to reach a desired outcome. You want your status update to spark interest. You hope your post gets a few laughs from your friends. You desire to appear intelligent, thought-provoking, and unmistakably right. But do you often question the intentions behind your status updates? Do you think about how your posts glorify the Lord and honor other people? Being human is tough. We can’t shake the sin that infects our thoughts and actions. And social media has made our Christian life even more difficult to navigate. It has created a new and much larger platform for us to sin. Thanks to social media our sin has the potential to influence hundreds and sometimes thousands of people. That is overwhelming! However, Jesus calls us to be “in this world and not of it” (John 17:14-19). This is not a call to hide under a rock and close your FB account. Jesus’ call is to love God and love your neighbor whether you are at work, in church or on FB. In light of the New Year, consider this verse, “Out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks” (Matt. 12:34). In other words, you are what you post. What message are you sending?

Isaiah 12 [1] You will say in that day: “I will give thanks to you, O LORD, for though you were angry with me, your anger turned away, that you might comfort me. [2] “Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid; for the LORD GOD is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation.” [3] With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. [4] And you will say in that day: “Give thanks to the LORD, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the peoples, proclaim that his name is exalted. [5] “Sing praises to the LORD, for he has done gloriously; let this be made known in all the earth. [6] Shout, and sing for joy, O inhabitant of Zion, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel.”
