Principal’s Message Week 2 Term 3
Welcome back to school, where Term 3 is off to a flying start with a range of activities occurring within the first
few weeks.
Last week, our Kindergarten students celebrated the first 100 days of their schooling by inviting families to visit
their classrooms and share morning tea. It was a lovely morning and I thank our Kindergarten teachers for
providing this opportunity.
Next week we have ‘An Evening with ACOS’ performing arts rehearsals and performances. As the Evening
with ACOS occurs during Education Week, our school will celebrate Education Week in Week 4, by inviting
families into classrooms to participate in STEM activities. NAIDOC
Week also occurred during the school holidays. Ben Venue will
celebrate NAIDOC in Week 6 (26-30 August).
Student Achievements
Congratulations to Brodie Meredith, Kairi Takayama and Hugo Fittler
who were competitors at the State Cross Country last Friday. Within
their groups, Brodie placed 50th, Kairi 46th and Hugo 28th in the State.
These are fantastic achievements.
Last week, Jeanie Inglis delivered a catch-up prepared and an
impromptu speech for the Premier’s Public Speaking Competition. In
spite of the added pressure of delivering her speeches to both a live
audience and adjudicators watching via video conference, Jeanie
won. Jeanie will now join Skye Vaughan in the next round later during
this term.
Good luck to our students competing in the Regional Athletics this Friday, as well as our soccer and touch
football teams.
School Development Day
Last week, Ben Venue teachers met for our School Development Day. We reviewed progress in relation to our
School Plan, discussed opportunities to continue to enhance the support our school provides in student
wellbeing, and worked to develop units of learning for the new Science and Technology syllabus.
Year teams also began work to further improve the design of our semesterly student reports. Last year, we
made changes in response to parent/carer feedback, making reports easier to read and interpret in History and
Geography, Science, PDHPE and Creative Arts. This year, we continue this process by improving reporting in
Mathematics.
An Evening with ACOS
Next week, the Ben Venue Orchestra, Marimba Group, Senior Choir and Dance Group will rehearse and
perform as part of the Evening with ACOS. The flyer for this event is attached to page 2 of this newsletter.
Notes were sent home with performers last week and more information regarding performance times will be
provided as soon as we have the running schedule. If your child is performing, please do not go to Madgwick
Hall to collect them after the evening performance. Students will be brought to the grassed area above
the ‘Stro’ cafe to assemble under the school banner, from where they can be collected. This is to ensure
student safety and avoid congestion in the walkways outside Madgwick Hall.

2020 Kindergarten Enrolment
Parents/carers who plan to enrol a child at Ben Venue in 2020 are strongly encouraged to have
completed an enrolment application and met with either Mrs Moffatt or Mr Pryce by early September. If
you are aware of anyone intending to enrol a child for 2020, please encourage them to make an
appointment by calling the school office on 02 6772 4263.
Primary Ethics
Last term, Ben Venue began offering Ethics classes as an alternative to non-scripture. Demand for this
option has increased and Primary Ethics, the authorised provider of our Ethics classes, is seeking
parent volunteers who are interested in completing training in order to support the delivery of these
classes. If you are interested, please contact Heidi McElnea via email at [email protected].
A training session is planned for this weekend in Uralla.
Digital Communication & Social Media
The world of digital interaction is increasingly part of our students’ lives. There are many positives to
young people engaging in the use of digital technologies and communication. There are also aspects
of online engagement that can impact negatively on the health and wellbeing of our students.
Students’ use of social media is difficult to monitor without the support of parents/carers. Please be
aware that the school does have the ability to take action in relation to online intimidation and
harassment, when screenshot evidence of conversations is provided. I encourage all parents/carers to
be aware of the nature of their child’s use of social media, gaming chat services and to work with the
school to ensure that this use does not negatively impact on students’ relationships and ability to enjoy
school. Cam Pryce

Library News Welcome back to everyone to what is shaping up to be an exciting term in the library.
Last year our school applied for a STEMShare kit which has been delivered and will now
be able to be used by students throughout this term. This week we have been
investigating the different resources that have been loaned to us such as BlueBots, Lego
WeDo and Dot and Dash robots. We will continue to use these throughout the term.
Donated Resources
Thank you to everyone who has generously donated books and resources to our library
such as marble runs and Lego. We are always very grateful for any donation of building
resources such as K’Nex, Mobilo or Lego to add to our growing activities for our Maker
Space low-tech activities.
Book Returns
Thank you to everyone who returned their books at the end of last term. The library will
send out overdue notices at the end of each term to help remind students of the books
they need to return. Students are unable to borrow new library books until their books are
returned. They can find this quite disappointing, especially when they see other children
in their class choosing and borrowing books. Please help your child to look after their
books at home and keep them in a special place so they can find their books for their
library lesson each week. If you are unsure of your child’s library day, please check with
their teacher or the librarian. Over the past two years we have purchased over 500 new
books for the library and we would love to share them with the students and families of
Ben Venue.
Book Fair and Book Parade Week 7
Our final book fair for the year will run over two days, Thursday 5 and Friday 6 of
September. The Book Parade will be on Friday, the second day of the fair. More
information will be sent out as the date gets closer. However, it is never too early to start
planning your costume!!

PDHPE Report In Term 2 all students from Kindergarten to Year 6 participated in a variety of Physical Education (PE) lessons
that were focussed on developing their athletics and Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS).
K-2 students participated in a variety of introductory athletics activities with a focus on running, jumping and
throwing using modified equipment. This gave these students an opportunity to try long jump, high jump and
shotput (using bean bags).
Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4) students participated in intermediate athletics activities such as running, jumping, leaping
and throwing. This allowed them to practice long jump, high jump, discus and shot put in preparation for our
athletics carnival.
Stage 3 (Years 5 and 6) focussed on advanced athletics skills in preparation for our athletics carnivals. Students
also refined their field event skills in high jump, long jump, shot put and discus.
All students continued to participate in their weekly Planned Physical Activity (PPA) each Friday.
Last week many classes participated in a mini Ninja Warrior course on our school fixed equipment. Lots of fun
was had by all with many students showing their well-developed balance skills and impressive upper body
strength.
This term all students K-6 will be participating in a dance unit where they will learn a variety of traditional dances
as well as some contemporary dances to songs such as the Macarena and the Nutbush.

Hockey Report
Wednesday 3 July saw the Ben Venue Boys Hockey Team travel to Tamworth for the Regional Gala
Day. With clear, crisp skies above, the day was set for a great Knockout Competition where the
winning team would earn the title of Regional Champs. With their first game at 10:00am, Ben Venue
lined up against Moree. It was soon evident that the skills and teamwork shown by the Ben Venue
players would make it a hard prospect for Moree to progress. The final score was 17-0 and allowed
our boys to practice moving the ball around the pitch in readiness for our next opponents.
Our second game was against West Tamworth and all players were ready to go in the midday sun.
Ben Venue got off to a great start with a quick goal from the starting whistle through centre striker
Luke Whitty, who ended up bagging around 14 goals for the day. Every member of the team held
together, demonstrating that their skills were solid, even against a more competent opposition.
Despite our back line getting a bit more of a work out than the previous game, West Tamworth were
unable to penetrate and the blue and gold finished the match with a 9-0 win.
Having no subs for the day, the boys were beginning to show some fatigue, and with only a 20 minute
break until the final, the show down against Tamworth Public was always going to be tough. To begin
the first half, our boys were struggling somewhat, with the Tamworth afternoon heat beginning to set
in and an early Tamworth goal denting the Ben Venue confidence. Despite this, some great positivity
and resilience ensued, as demonstrated through senior players Jack Coddington and Denman Abbo.
The half time siren offered a much needed rest and opportunity to rehydrate. Some simple refocusing
got the boys fired up and the next 25 minutes became a see-sawing struggle with Ben Venue fighting
back with two more goals, whilst Tamworth eventually equalised at 2-2. The final siren sounded and
the game was off to sudden death drop offs, with both teams reduced to 9 players. The Ben Venue
boys were so determined and definitely up for the challenge, hitting the pitch as if it was the start of
game one. Despite some tense moments, the match eventually came down to a solid strike from right
midfielder Jared Frost, which sent a resounding thud of ball on backboard into the crowd of onlookers.
Ben Venue had done it and the golden goal was theirs 3-2.
As coach, I was so proud of all players as they showed true grit throughout the latter parts of the day.
Archie Clarke was a standout with some sensational control through the mids, working hard to
combine with both the defensive and attacking lines. The Ben Venue boys look forward to competing
in the state finals in Narellan on the September 17.
