Parent’s Corner ABC’s Of Student Success/ABC’s de Éxito del Estudiante
Written by Addie Gaines, principal at Kirbyville (Missouri) Elementary School, these mini-essays emphasize the
important role that parents play in the achievement of your school’s students.
A is for ATTENDANCE. Attendance is a critical factor in any child’s school success. Children should attend school every day, except in
cases of illness or emergency. It is impossible to replace the learning that happens on any school day with make-
up work. Regular attendance and promptness are good habits that are expected and appreciated at all levels of
schooling and in the workplace. This year, make school a priority in your household. Commit to excellence in
attendance. Your child’s future depends on it!
B is for BEDTIME. Awwwww, Mom! Already? Sound familiar? On average, children need 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night.
Sleep is important for many reasons. Lack of sleep can cause kids to be hypersensitive, impatient, or cranky. It is
more difficult for children to concentrate and learn when they are tired. (Some doctors even believe that during
sleep the brain “files away” what is learned during the day.) Encouraging quiet activities — such as reading —
just prior to bedtime offers a transition that helps children relax. Sweet dreams!
C is for CHOICES. According to Jim Fay, author of Becoming a Love and Logic Parent, giving children choices is more effective
than making demands. He suggests…
Never give choices if it might cause problems for you or anyone else.
Give only two options for each choice, both equally okay with you. For example,
Would you like peas or carrots? Or Do you want to do homework now or in 15 minutes?
If the child doesn’t decide within 10 seconds, make the choice for him or her.

La asistencia es un factor crítico para el éxito escolar de cada niño. Los niños deben asistir a escuela cada día, sólo
menos los casos de enfermedad o emergencia. Es imposible reemplazar el aprendizaje que ocurre durante un día

La B es para BUENAS NOCHES.
¡Ayyyyyy, Mami! ¿Ya es hora? ¿Se oye común? En promedio, los niños necesitan entre 8 y 10 horas de sueño cada
noche. El sueño es importante por varias razones. La falta de sueño puede causar que los niños estén súper-
sensibles, impacientes, o mal-humorados. Es más difícil concentrar y aprender cuando los niños andan cansados.
(Algunos médicos aún dicen que, durante el sueño, el cerebro “archiva” todo lo que ha sido aprendido durante el
día.) Alentar actividades quietas – como leer – un poco antes de la hora de dormirse provee una transición que les

The 2014-2015 school year got off to a great start. We began our second
year with our full day Pre-K 4 Program. RISD believes that an investment in
early education is one of the best investments, as it will provide our students
with a strong solid foundation for success. We will continue to front end ed-
ucation. We would like to remind everyone of the Footsteps2Brilliance App.
This App will supplement the literacy skills of the youth in our community.
Research in early childhood education indicates that students who participate
in full day high quality Pre-K programs have a greater likelihood for academic
success throughout their school years and beyond.
Footsteps2Brilliance is a best practice model aimed at increasing family engagement and leveling
the playing field for all early learners Pre-K through 3rd grade. Raymondville ISD students and
parents living within the 78580 zip code will be able to access this literacy development program
from any smart phone, tablet or traditional computer. The community has the capability of becom-
ing an extension of the RISD Classroom through Footsteps2Brilliance.
We are excited to announce the inception of a new athletic program at the middle school level.
The RISD Board recently approved and allocated funds for a baseball and softball program. Inter-
ested 7th and 8th grade boys and girls are asked to contact Coach Derek Solis, Middle School Ath-
letic Coordinator.
At the high school level we continue to enhance our dual enrollment program. RISD has increased
the course offering through Texas A & M University Kingsville. This partnership will provide our
high school students with the opportunity to acquire college hours while simultaneously earning
high school credit. Qualifying students are afforded the opportunity to earn college credit hours
on the school district dollar; thus, saving their parents and themselves money. The number of stu-
dent participating in this program continues to grow. 9th -12th grade students that are interested
should contact their guidance counselor for more information.
We are very proud of our high school band as the Raymondville high school band advanced to Area
after a 16 year absence. We are extremely pleased with the band students and our band directors
for their hard work and their recent accomplishments. I would like to thank all of our parents for
their dedication, commitment and assistance throughout the fall!
As always we continue to strive for educational excellence. We encourage parent involvement and
participation. We have and will continue to invest heavily in your child’s future. We recognize your
child’s success will be our success. To that end I strongly urge parents to be in constant communi-
cation with their child’s teacher, counselor and principals. Working together we can make a differ-
ence in the life and the future of your child’s education.

Tuvimos un comienzo excelente en este año escolar del 2014-2015. Comenzamos nuestro segundo
año con el programa Pre-K de día completo. RISD cree que el invertir en la educación temprana es
la mejor decisión, ya que proporcionará a nuestros estudiantes con una fuerte base sólida para el
éxito. Seguiremos guiando con la educación delantera. Nos gustaría recordar a todos del App
Footsteps2Brilliance. Esta aplicación permitirá complementar las habilidades de literatura de los
niños de nuestra comunidad. Investigaciones en la educación temprana indican que los estudiantes
que participan en programas de alta calidad de Pre-K durante todo el día, tienen una mayor proba-

haber avanzado al concurso Área después de 16 años de ausencia. Estamos muy orgullosos de los
estudiantes de la banda y sus directores por su grande dedicación y sus logros recientes. Me gus-
taría agradecer a todos los padres por su esfuerzo, entrega, dedicación y asistencia durante el se-
mestre de otoño!
Como siempre nos seguimos esforzándonos por la excelencia educativa. Les animamos a tener más

Greetings ROAA Family,
Before I get to the business of this newsletter, I want to take a moment to wish everyone a
happy and safe holiday season. As the new year approaches, my hope for each of you is that
you have time to relax and reflect. Given the demanding world, budgeting time for these
activities is becoming increasingly more difficult, but it is absolutely necessary, and I hope
everyone has a chance to take some time for themselves over the next couple of weeks.
With the 2014 – 2015 school year progressing rapidly, and as we begin the third six weeks,
we ask you that you monitor your sons’ and daughters’ progress and attendance. As you
know, we offer an optional, flexible schedule to students, and with that in mind, attendance
and effort are critical to students making progress. Please check with them and ask them
how they are doing and what they are working on at school. If they know you are staying on
top of it with them and supporting their efforts, these students are more likely to get the work done.
It is no secret that good attendance is one of the most fundamental keys to student success. What is
even more challenging is that, as a staff, we cannot provide the needed instruction to a student unless he or she is
present. Another aspect of attendance to keep in mind is how students are defined to graduate. The definition is
two-fold, students who are on track having earned required number of credits and those students who maintain a
90% or higher attendance rate.
Thank you to everyone for the support and encouragement that you give our students. We cannot do the
work we do without your help. Happy holidays to everyone.

Saludos a la familia de ROAA, Antes de que llegue a los negocios de este boletín, quiero tomar un momento para desearles a todos una feliz
navidad y próspero año nuevo. Mientras se acerca el año nuevo, mi esperanza para cada uno de ustedes es que tengan tiempo para descansar y reflexionar. Teniendo en cuenta el mundo exigente, no hay tiempo para presupuestos con es-tos tiempos que se convierten más difíciles cada vez, pero es absolutamente necesario, y espero que todo el mundo tenga la oportunidad de tomar algún tiempo para sí mismos en las próximas semanas.
Con el año 2014 – 2015 avanzando rápidamente, y como empezamos las terceras seis semanas, le pedimos que usted monitoree el progreso y la asistencia a clases de sus hijos o hijas. Como saben, ofrecemos un horario flexible, opcional para los estudiantes y con eso en mente, esfuerzo y asistencia son fundamentales en el progreso de los estu-diantes. Si ellos saben que están quedando encima de ellos y apoyando sus esfuerzos, estos estudiantes son más propensos a terminar el trabajo.
No es ningún secreto que la buena asistencia es una de las claves fundamentales para el éxito del estudiante. Lo que es aún más difícil es que, como personal, no podemos proporcionar la instrucción necesaria a un estudiante a menos que él o ella está presente. Dear LC Smith Parents,
On behalf of LC Smith Elementary, I extend the warmest
wishes to you and your family for the upcoming holidays.
This is a special time of the year when we all reflect on the
importance of sharing, giving, and joy. We want to wish eve-
ryone a wonderful holiday, and look forward to continue to
work with all of your children and the community. It’s hard
to believe that our first semester of school is almost com-
pleted. Every day brings a new challenge and learning in all
of our subject areas. Students have been working extremely hard since day
one of the school year. Our teachers are making sure that all students are
academically ready and prepared for what’s ahead in our second semester. Please continue to encour-
age your children every day. Provide them with feedback for improvement and continue in coaching
them to achieve at higher levels. Continue to meet with your child’s teachers to get first hand feed-
back about their progress. I am extremely proud of all of the first semester accomplishments at LC
Smith Elementary. Our students have done very well in activities such as: attendance, grades, cheer-
leading, choir, dance team, folklorico dance, food drives, pep rallies, and many more activities. Again,
thank you for your cooperation and for helping all of our students become successful.

Queridos Padres de LC Smith,
En nombre de LC Smith Primaria, extiendo los mejores deseos para usted y su familia para las próximas
vacaciones. Este es un momento especial del año en que todos reflexionemos sobre la importancia de com-
partir, dar, y la alegría. Queremos desearles a todos unas maravillosas vacaciones, y espero seguir trabajan-
do con todos sus hijos y la comunidad. Es difícil de creer que nuestro primer semestre de la escuela está
casi terminada. Cada día trae un nuevo reto y el aprendizaje en todas nuestras áreas. Los estudiantes han
estado trabajando muy duro desde el primer día del año escolar. Nuestros profesores se aseguran de que

Dear Raymondville High School Parents,
As our 1st semester of the 2014 – 2015 school year is coming to an end,
Raymondville High School continues its mission to prepare and support our
students for success in an evolving global society by being College and Ca-
reer Ready. Some of our 1st semester highlights are RHS continues to
work closely with Texas A&M University Kingsville in our Dual and Current
Enrollment Program. For the 2015 Spring semester, we anticipate the en-
rollment of 77 students currently in grades 10 thru 12, out of the 126 cur-
rent senior students, 115 seniors have been accepted to a college or uni-
versity such as Texas State Technical College, Texas A&M College Station,
Texas A&M Kingsville, University of Houston, University of Texas - San
Antonio and University of Texas- Austin and the Mighty Bearkat Band received once again a Division
I Rating at the UIL Pigskin Jubilee and qualified to compete in Area. RHS Band came in 17th out of
32 total bands at the UIL Area Marching Contest.
Several student and parents participated in different events like Gifted and Talented Awareness
Parent Meeting, HESTEC, MAARS TSTC Leadership Conference, Senior Migrant CAMP College Fair,
and Cyber Mentoring for STEMS Careers. More student and parent meetings are scheduled for the
upcoming semester.
As Raymondville High School continues to move forward, we ask that you continue to support us
in reaching our campus goals to reach Excellence in Academics, Attendance and Community Engage-
ment that can certainly lead our students to be College and Career Ready.

Querido Padres de la Escuela Preparatoria de Raymondville,
El primer semestre del año escolar 2014 - 2015 está por terminar, la escuela secundaria de Raymondville con-
tinúa su misión de preparar y apoyar el desarrollo de nuestros estudiantes en la universidad y en una carrera en
una sociedad global. Unos de los acontecimientos del primer semestre son RHS junto con la Universidad de Te-
xas A&M de Kingsville empezaran las inscripciones duales de clases universitarias para el próximo semestre del
2015. Anticipamos la inscripción de 77 estudiantes que pertenecen en los grados de 10 al 12, de los 126 estu-
diantes del grado 12, 115 de ellos han sido aceptados en colegios o universidades como Texas State Technical
College, Texas A&M College Station, Texas A&M Kingsville, University of Houston, University of Texas - San
Antonio and University of Texas- Austin y Nuestra Banda recibió por segundo año una división I en el evento de
UIL Pigskin Jubilee y calificaron para competir en la competencia de UIL Area Marching Contest. La Banda
alcanzo el lugar 17 de 32 bandas en total.
Nuestros estudiantes y padres asistieron en varios eventos como la Junta de Padres del programa de talen-
tosos y dotados, HESTEC, la Conferencia Juventud de Migrantes, Conferencia de MAARS TSTC, Guía Ciberné-
tica para Carreras en STEMS. Mas juntas estudantal y parentales estar por venir en el siguiente semestre.
Así como nuestra escuela continúa adelante, le pedimos que usted continúe apoyándonos en alcanzar nuestras
metas para alcanzar excelencia en lo académico, atendencia y en involucrar a nuestra comunidad para ayudar
a nuestros estudiantes a alcanzar éxito en el colegio y en su vocación.

Dear Pittman Elementary Parents,
As the end of the 1st semester of the 2014-2015 school
year quickly approaches, please allow me an opportunity to
“CONGRATULATE” all Pittman Elementary students, parents
and staff for all that has been accomplished in such a short pe-
riod of time. This year's theme, supports our desire to remain a
campus that excels in providing students with the best education possi-
ble. We are committed to excellence and meeting the needs of all students.
We will continue to support daily attendance (Perfect is Perfect Attendance)
and positive behavior (PBIS).
Our classroom instruction and student expectations are soaring high. Pittman
Elementary teachers are committed to learning each child's strengths and needs. From this infor-
mation, they create a classroom environment that both challenges and supports every student. To-
gether we will make a difference in the lives of children by maintaining our commitment and dedication
to their learning. We will continue to ensure that our students are being exposed to the state man-
dated standards through the delivery of instruction that will be full of rigor and in-depth relevance.
Our parents play a very important role as well. As our students' first teacher, all of our parents
are responsible for staying in communication with the classroom teachers. Let's continue to work to-

Estimados Padres de la Primaria Pittman,
A medida que el final del 1er semestre del año escolar 2014-2015 se acerca rápidamente, permítan-
me una oportunidad para "felicitar" a todos los estudiantes, padres y maestras/os de Pittman Elemen-
tary por todo lo que se ha logrado en un corto período de tiempo. El tema de este año, apoya nuestro
deseo de seguir siendo una escuela que sobresale en proporcionar a los estudiantes la mejor educación
posible. Estamos comprometidos con la excelencia y la satisfacción de las necesidades de todos los es-
tudiantes. Vamos a seguir apoyando la asistencia diaria (Perfecta es asistencia perfecta) y la conducta

Nuestras expectativas de instrucción en los alumnos se han disparado alto. Maestras/os de Pittman

Dear Myra Green Middle School Parents,
A holiday season is upon us and with it comes a new oppor-
tunity to reach our goals. We are looking forward to promising
signs of our hard work. We have reviewed results from 1st and
2nd six weeks assessments and have developed plans to assist
our students in improving. We have begun after school inter-
ventions for all students and encourage all parents to have
their children attend.
Teachers are working diligently in providing the rigor necessary to successfully challenge the
STAAR (State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness). We will be conducting a benchmark
for students at these grade levels in mid-January. The results will provide a gauge on how stu-
dents have improved in their reading comprehension and in math skills. Students have realized
they have to study harder than ever before to keep up with the rigor of the instruction and the
assessment.
Our counselors have also worked on a variety of sessions from character building, making good
choices, being safe, and anti-bullying. We will continue to provide a safe working and learning envi-
ronment at Myra Green Middle School. This endeavor is ongoing and it is a set priority for our
staff and faculty.

Estimados Padres de la Escuela Secundaria Myra Green,
La temporada de navidad ya está aquí y con él viene una nueva oportunidad para alcanzar nues-
tras metas. Hemos revisado los resultados de primera y segunda seis semanas y hemos desarrolla-
do planes para ayudar a nuestros estudiantes a mejorar. Hemos comenzado después de las inter-
venciones académicas para todos los estudiantes y les pidemos que nos ayuden a animar sus hijos
que asistan.
Los maestros están trabajando con diligencia en la implementación del rigor necesario para ver
con éxito el STAAR (Evaluación de Preparación Académica de Texas ) . Estaremos llevando a cabo
un punto de referencia para los estudiantes en estos niveles de grado a mediados de enero. Los
resultados proporcionarán un medidor de cómo los estudiantes han mejorado en su comprensión de
lectura y en matemáticas. Los estudiantes se han dado cuenta que tienen que estudiar más duro que
nunca para mantenerse al día con el rigor de la instrucción y la evaluación.
Nuestras consejeras también han trabajado y presentado a nuestros estudiantes una variedad
de sesiones de la formación del carácter, tomar buenas decisiones, ser seguro, y anti -bullying .
