BE CIVIL!
I’m Right . . .
You’re Wrong!
Disagreeing
Without BeingDisagreeable
“Yes, we need civility now more than ever. The teaching of civility
begins in families,
Is further nurtured in classrooms and schools, and comes into full bloom as students
become adults, parents, community members and citizens.
And then, hopefully, the cycle begins anew with the next generation.”
Mary Kimball
WE NEED CIVILITY
When we think of how we want our children to act and how we
want them to treat others, it is easy to give clear descriptions.
It’s harder to detail how to go about teaching children to value others, their opinions, beliefs and backgrounds.
VALUING OTHER’S VIEWS
Because civility is based on consideration and respect towards others,
it is first of all important to teach our children to be respectful to others.
How can we translate this into lessons and activities at school ?
Here are some tips to nurture civility in classrooms and schools . . .
LEARNING RESPECT
1. Encourage the basics of politeness - “please” and “thank you”.
2. Model Civility. SHOW how you want your students to behave
towards others.
MODEL CIVILITY . . .
3. Allow sharing by students in class, giving time for others to ask questions
for understanding.
4. Stop unwanted behaviors firmly, clearly, and consistently.
SHARING & LIMITS
5. Create a list of classroom expectations by students. If the students
create it, they will show ownership and more self-accountability to
adhere to the expectations.
6. Construct lessons that embrace the differences of students.
STUDENT INVOLVEMENT
7. Generate regular opportunities for students to not only interact with one
another positively, but collaborate with each other.
8. Make time to discuss cultural backgrounds.
Interaction & Variety
9. Celebrate whenever possible.
10. Discover that Civility is a human strength to be discovered and
unearthed. It is an energizing human strength and not a
weakness.
