When we think of how we want our children to act and how we

want them to treat others, it is easy to give clear descriptions.

It’s harder to detail how to go about teaching children to value others,their opinions, beliefs and backgrounds.

Because civility is based on consideration and respect towards others,

it is first of all important to teach our children to be respectful to others.

How can we translate this into lessons and activities at school ?

Here are some tips to nurture civility in classrooms and schools . . .

LEARNING RESPECT

1. Encourage the basics of politeness - “please” and “thank you”.

2. Model Civility. SHOW how you want your students to behave

towards others.

3. Allow sharing by students in class, giving time for others to ask questions

for understanding.

4. Stop unwanted behaviors firmly, clearly, and consistently.

5. Create a list of classroom expectations by students. If the students

create it, they will show ownership and more self-accountability to

adhere to the expectations.

6. Construct lessons that embrace the differences of students.

7. Generate regular opportunities for students to not only interact with one

another positively, but collaborate with each other.

8. Make time to discuss cultural backgrounds.

unearthed. It is an energizing human strength and not a

weakness.
