LeonMcCawley-PianoFriday18thOctoberLeonMcCawley contrasts and interweaves early and lateworks of great keyboard composers. TheprogrammealsoincludesthefirstpianoworkoftheVienneseemigrécomposerHansGál(1890-1987)whosecompletepianomusicMcCawleyhaschampionedandrecorded.The programmewill includeHaydn’s Sonata in Gmajor Hob. XVI/40, Schubert’s Sonata in CminorD958, Schumann’s ‘Abegg’ Variations Op. 1, Hans Gál’s Three Sketches, Op. 7 (1910), Brahms’s 4KlavierstückeOp.119andChopin’sPolonaise-FantasieOp.61.

Roderick Williams writes:- most singers and pianists who specialise in art song would have littledifficulty inagreeingthatFranzSchubert is theapotheosisofLiederwriting;hissongsmanagetobemoving, profound, intellectually rigorous and, above all, disarmingly humble, all at the sametime.GreatBritainoverthecenturieshasalsoproducedsomeheavyweightsintheworldofartsongandyet thesuspicion lingers that this country’s composers somehowdon’tmatchup to the ‘goldenstandard’.It hasoften struckme that the combinationof ThomasHardy’s extraordinary anddistinctivepoetrywithGeraldFinzi’spowerfulempatheticmusiccanholditsownagainstanyothermusicinthisgenre.Iwanted to construct a programme that would showcase some of Finzi’s masterpieces alongside asympatheticchoiceofSchubert’ssongs;arhapsodic,freeassociationofpoeticthoughtsandimages.Inthefirsthalfoftheprogramme,afewsongsfromFinzi’sBefore&AfterSummertriggeragroupofSchubertsongsthatresonatewiththemesfromHardy’spoems.Thispreparesthewayforthesecondhalf,acompleteperformanceofFinzi’sEarth,AirandRain,concernedwithsomeofHardy’sfavouritetropes–TimeandtheSeasons.

SepturaBrassFriday13thDecemberThe seasonal celebration of Christmas has been the inspiration for so many great musicalmasterpieces, and brass instruments are a vital part of this festive musical fabric. JointConcertwithVocalFusion&CitiUKChoirSaturday30thNovemberTwoawardwinningchoirs-VocalFusionandCitiUKChoir–willshowcasetheacapellasingingofVocalFusion,thediverserepertoireofCitichoirandthecombinedchoirvoicesofnearly40singers.
Thechoirsareperformingthisconcertinaidoftwocharitieswhichbenefitchildren-Place2Be,whichistheUK’sleadingnationalchildren'smentalhealthcharityandTheMalawiSchoolsProject,aSussexbasedcharitywhichsupportschildren’seducationinSouthernMalawi.
VocalFusion,ledbyZoëPeate,isbasedinSteyning,andwasformedin2015.IthasrecentlywontheSmall Chorus Award at the BABS (British Association of Barbershop Singers) – and the four partharmonywillsingmodernandwellknownsongs.
CitiUKChoirwasformedin2013byGarethMaloneforhispopularBBCtelevisionseriesTheChoir:SingWhileYouWork.TheymadeittothefinalandsincethentheChoirhascontinuedtothriveundertheleadership of Dan Ludford-Thomas. Theywill perform a selection of classical, pop, gospel and folkrepertoire.
