Cecilia Vaicels of Bellerose,Queens, recalls her courtshipwith future husband Charlie anda couple of memorable dates.

My husband, Charlie, andI met in July 1974 atGlenn’s Tavern on

Hillside Avenue in RichmondHill, Queens. My friends and Iwere meeting some people atthe tavern, which we hadn’tbeen to before.

A group of guys, includingCharlie, started talking to us.Someone asked me where Iworked. When I said I was anexecutive secretary at ConEdison, Charlie said his fatherworked for Con Edison, too. Westarted a conversation. Charliewas 19 and was a checkingaccount clerk at Manufacturer’sHanover Trust Bank in Manhat-tan. He lived in Glendale. I was21 and lived in Ridgewood. Myname was Cecilia Tierney then.

Our first date was on Aug. 7.He gave me a bottle of Rev-lon’s Charlie perfume, thentook me to Your Father’sMustache, a Greenwich Vil-lage restaurant. We orderedfood and he asked me what I’dlike to drink. My mother ad-vised me to get whatever hewas having so I wouldn’t ordersomething too pricey andembarrass him. I said, “What-ever you’re drinking.” Heordered a pitcher of beer.

Charlie was such a gentle-man. He even bought me aT-shirt. We were having awonderful time! However, Iwasn’t used to drinking beerand I drank three mugs. As wewalked outside, the hot air hitme and I fell like a tree! Char-lie picked me up, threw me

over his shoulder and carriedme to his car. I slept all theway home.

We continued dating and sixweeks later we went fishing. Onboard the boat I got a bite on theline. There were six hooks witha Mackerel on each one. As Ireeled in the line, Charlie toldme to whip it over the rail. I didand some fish went flying acrossthe boat. Suddenly Charlie wasyelling, “Don’t pull!” I hadhooked him in the seat of hispants and had literally caughtmyself a man.

We were married on March17, 1979 — St. Patrick’s Day —at St. Matthias Church inRidgewood. In 1989 we movedto Bellerose, Queens. We haveone daughter.

Charlie retired in 2006 as asuperintendent with the NewYork City Sanitation Depart-ment. I’ve worked at severaljobs over the years. Since 1991,

I’ve had acting parts withmany theater groups and nowperform in shows for Isle ofShoals Productions.

We marked our 35th wed-ding anniversary last year bymarching in the St. Patrick’sDay parade, followed by din-ner and a comedy show, plus atwo-night stay at the NewYork Hilton where we spent

our honeymoon. For our 36thanniversary, we went to Wood-loch Pines Resort in Pennsylva-nia with friends.

Our life together has neverbeen dull. My husband tellseveryone, if they want to have awild time at their wedding, marry an Irish girl on St.Patrick’s Day!
