KEEPING OUR COMMITMENTS
In the musical Fid-dler on the Roof, the husband, Tevye, whose marriage was arranged years and years before, wants to know if his wife really loves him. Was their marriage just an arrangement, a deal? Did his wife, after all
these years, ever love him? Does she still? We need to know if our loving commitments stick. We need to be reminded and reaffirmed. In the first reading, Joshua, Moses’ successor, needed to know if the people would remain faithful to their covenant with the Lord. Joshua was going to lead them to a new life—a settled life. Would they be faithful? Jesus, who identified himself as the very life of his disciples’ life, needed to know: Will you also go away or will you stay? We do not often see Jesus this vulnerable. Peter and the apostles chose to stay. What will we do? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
Pocas veces ve-mos a Jesús tan vulnerable. Pedro y los apóstoles es-cogieron quedarse. ¿Qué vamos a hacer nosotros? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

DID YOU KNOW? Back to school: carpool safety Beginning a new school year can mean starting up a new car-pool – trading rides to and from sports and after-school ac-tivities with other parents. Teach your children that they should never get into a car with someone they don’t know. They should also have a parent’s permission before they ac-cept a ride with someone they do know. If you do have to send someone to pick up your kids, establish a family code word. If the driver gives your children the code word, they know that it’s safe to get in the car. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
The ministry of permanent deacons has become an
essential part of our parish life today, yet for centuries until
1967, this deeply traditional ministry had virtually disap-
peared. Every priest had first to be ordained a deacon, but
the notion that one could actually embrace a permanent voca-
tion to the diaconate was lost.
The primary ministry of the deacon is to the welfare of
the community, especially its poor, and his role in sacraments
and preaching flows from that. His principal role is to animate
and promote the ministry of all the faithful. Ninety percent
of permanent deacons are married, although the discipline of
celibacy for clerics means that if a deacon is widowed, nor-
mally he cannot remarry, nor can an unmarried deacon marry
once ordained. The deacon does not preside at Mass nor may
he absolve sins. Nor, since anointing of the sick is linked theo-
logically to penance, may he anoint.
Sometimes we are slow to engage with a tradition: Trent
approved permanent deacons in the 1560s, but nothing was
done until the 1960s. The vitality of the long‑delayed restora-
tion has greatly enriched the Church, particularly in the
United States, where the majority of the deacons in the
world serve. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Faith Facts about Blessed Junípero Serra 14 Datos de fe sobre el Beato Junípero Serra
We are sharing with you a series of weekly bulletin posts of Blessed Junípero . Pope Francis is scheduled to canonize Fr. Serra on Sept. 23 at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C. He will became the first saint to be canonized on U.S. soil, and the first
Hispanic saint in America. This will conclude our series. *************************************************
13. During a recent conference in Rome, Archbishop José H. Gomez discussed the importance of the up-coming canonization of Blessed Junípero Serra. Serra will become America’s first Latino saint, and the first saint to be canonized on American soil. “In order for his canoni-zation to bear spiritual fruits in America, we need to start a new conversation about Father Serra and the missionary era,” Archbishop Gomez said.
14. During his homily on Junípero Serra, Pope Francis praised the willingness of Father Serra to abandon the comforts of native Spain to spread the love of God in the New World. “I wonder if today we are able to re-spond with the same generosity and courage to the call of God,” said Pope Francis, during the Mass at the Pontifical North American College in Rome. The Mass was part of a daylong conference on Father Serra sponsored by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles on May 2, 2015.

INTENTION / INTENCIONES
eterna. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
