SPARKS OF BRIGHTNESSAMID THE WINTER
SOLSTICE
The Week in Review by T.D. Thornton
Leave it to one of the darkest days of the year to deliver two
glimmering equine efforts that could combust into shining stars
for the 2021 racing season.
On the cusp of the winter solstice, breakout races book-ended
the Saturday Fair Grounds card. One was a smart, step-wise
progression by a juvenile colt in a NW2L allowance who now has
credible GI Kentucky Derby aspirations. The other was an
admirably impressive comeback by a still-undefeated 3-year-old
whose own chance at the 2020 Derby got derailed by injuries
and untimely setbacks.
Both horses are campaigned by Godolphin, which is off to a
rip-roaring start at the three-week-old New Orleans meet with a
7-1-5 record and $233,740 in earnings from just 17 starts
through Saturday=s racing.
Proxy (Tapit) ably made the jump from the maiden-winning
ranks to Derby relevancy in the first race Dec. 19. Even though
his second lifetime two-turn win came against a short field,
don=t hold that against him, as each one of the three rivals gave
the Godolphin homebred a serious challenge.
Proxy brushed the gate at the break, recovered well, and
emerged confidently from between horses to assume command
onto the backstretch. Cont. p3
SECRETARIAT CENTER OPEN FOR THE
HOLIDAY SEASON by Katie Ritz
For the first time since opening their doors in 2004, the
Secretariat Center at the Kentucky Horse Park will keep its
reschooling operation up and running throughout the winter
months.
Shelley Mann, who stepped on as the program=s executive
director this September, spoke on their plans for the upcoming
season.
ATypically in the past, we have fostered horses out or
decreased our numbers for two or three months out of the
winter,@ she said. AThis is the first year that we really want to
stay open. We have an entirely brand new staff this year and we
want to work.@
One reason why the facility has shut down in the past is the
lack of an onsite indoor arena. Cont. p6

DADDY LONG LEGS COLT WINS GROUP 1 IN CHILE 8Caso Cerrado (Chi), a sophomore colt by Taylor Made Stallions’ Daddy Long Legs, captured Saturday’s G1 GranPremio St Leger at Hipodromo Chile. He is now the secondtop-level scorer for the G2 Royal Lodge S. and G2 UAE Derbyhero, following up fellow southern-hemisphere Group 1 victorFallen From Heaven.

Panty Raid | Sarah Andrew
Week in Review cont. from p1
The chart doesn=t show it, but he conceded the top spot
between calls, giving up the rail and the lead to an eager pace
prompter.
Proxy re-engaged and swatted away that foe at the entrance
to the final bend, then braced for a tag-team attack from the
two stretch-running colts who had been held in abeyance.
All four horses were within a length of one another
three-sixteenths from the wire, and Proxy drifted out three
times under left-handed pressure. He appeared to intimidate an
outside rival, but being in close quarters only emboldened
Proxy, and when asked for another level of torque in deep
stretch he dug in and responded, opening up to win by 2 1/4
lengths at 7-10 odds for trainer Michael Stidham and jockey
Angel Suarez.
Although Proxy=s final time of 1:45.56 was not stellar (76 Beyer
Speed Figure), his effort impressed more from a Ahow he did it@
perspective rather than Ahow fast.@
Proxy=s pedigree has a tantalizing, distance-centric slant. In
2007, his dam, Panty Raid, won the GI American Oaks
Invitational S. at 10 furlongs on the turf, the GI Spinster S. at
nine furlongs on a synthetic track, and the GII Black-Eyed Susan
S. at nine furlongs on dirt.
Godolphin purchased Panty Raid for $2.5 million at the 2008
Fasig-Tipton November sale, and she most notably produced the
Stidham-trained Micheline (Bernardini), who earlier this year
was a MSW and GISP Godolphin filly who set a course record for
1 5/16 miles in a $500,000 grass stakes at Kentucky Downs.
Proxy, it should be noted, has raced on Lasix for both of his
Fair Grounds wins after running second, beaten a neck, without
it in his Monmouth Park debut. Cont. p4

He=ll have to ditch the Lasix in order to stamp himself as a
top-tier Derby candidate, because this year=s edition (and the
major points-earning Derby prep races) will be conducted
without that anti-bleeding drug.
>Max= is Back
A dozen races and nearly six hours later on Saturday, Maxfield
(Street Sense) pranced onto the floodlit Fair Grounds main track
for the Tenacious S.
If the passage of nearly seven months since his last start made
you forget what a sleek and athletically gifted equine specimen
he is, the dark bay=s presence in this relatively modest $75,000
nightcap would soon snap you back to those long, warm days of
spring, when AMax@ was ranked as high as third on the TDN
Derby Top 12 and was last seen professionally dismantling a
pretty decent field in the GIII Matt Winn S. even though he was
not fully cranked for a prime effort that day.
Depending on which prism you choose to view him through,
Maxfield is either the most unlucky four-for-four racehorse on
the planet right now or the luckiest.
On the unlucky side, recall that Max unleashed the most
visually impressive juvenile stakes effort of 2019 when he
ransacked the GI Claiborne Breeders= Futurity field at Keeneland
that October. He loomed as one of the favorites for the GI
Breeders= Cup Juvenile, but was forced to scratch the week of
the race, and underwent ankle chip surgery in November that
kept him sidelined until mid-winter.
Godolphin tasked trainer Brendan Walsh with mapping out a
slow but steady 2020 comeback for Max. But just when he
appeared poised to resurface in the entries, the pandemic hit,
halting most racing and knocking the Triple Crown schedule
askew. Cont. p5

Yet a few weeks later, this timing change appeared to work in
Maxfield=s favor, because that May 23 Winn score would allow
the homebred time for a summer prep race or two prior to the
rescheduled Sept. 5 Derby.
But on June 10, Maxfield suffered a non-displaced condylar
fracture in his right front leg while breezing a half-mile at
Keeneland. Godolphin immediately issued a press release saying
that it was looking forward to a 2021 campaign after the colt
healed. But that prospect was hardly etched in stone.
So the fact that Max persevered through yet another long-haul
rehab has to be considered the lucky part. The icing on the cake
is that he thrived in Saturday=s comeback, and we still have yet
to see his all-out best.
Shadowing the speed, the 1-2 favorite cut an intimidating
presence while in stalk mode sitting second for most of an
untroubled trip, and watching Max inch forward with
metronomic precision down the backstretch gave the
impression that he could have inhaled the frontrunner at will.
But jockey Florent Geroux instead waited until five-sixteenths
out to cue his colt to quicken, with Max coming over the top at
the three-sixteenths pole. He was hand-urged and not overly
extended to win by 2 1/2 measured lengths in 1:43.35 (98
Beyer).
AI=m relieved,@ Walsh said post-race. AIt=s nice to get him back
[to racing] and have him run so well. He was working so well
going into it, you=re just looking for confirmation. He gave us
what we needed to seeY. He was a little fresh, so maybe he was
a little more aggressive than normal. I don=t think he=s a deep
closer by any means. He=s a stronger horse this year and I think
we can ride him more prominently.@

Click here to learn more about the Secretariat Center=s growing
program.
Secretariat Center Open All Winter cont. from p1
AThere are going to be some days, unfortunately, where we
won=t be able to get a ton of riding done,@ Mann said. ABut there
are so many other things that we can do with the horses
whether it=s handling them on the ground, teaching them to clip
or doing things with them in the stall--just handling them every
single day that we can, rain or shine. We=re looking forward to
it.@
For nearly two decades, the Secretariat Center has worked to
prepare off-track Thoroughbreds for successful post-track
careers by rehabilitating and training foundational skills that will
help them succeed with their eventual adopters.
AWe really pride ourselves on being the gold standard in
Thoroughbred retraining,@ Mann said. AI think what makes us
unique is that we are not a rescue facility, we are a retraining
facility. We have great relationships with our donors and our
adopters, and we work to make that match between a quality
horse that is athletic and versatile with a perfect home where
they can be happy and healthy for the rest of their lives.@
In order to keep the barn open in the coming months, the
Secretariat Center is conducting a >Be An Angel= program this
holiday season to help gather basic supplies the horses will use
throughout the winter.
AWe=re really working to provide as many opportunities for the
horses as possible,@ Mann said. AThis year we have created a
program where we have Be An Angel trees in a variety of
locations around the Lexington area. Each ornament has a photo
of a horse currently on the property and on the back is their
Christmas wish list.@
Requests on the wish lists include girths, winter blankets,
turnout sheets and more.
Be An Angel trees are located at the Secretariat Center main
office, as well as KBC Horse Supplies, Rood and Riddle
Veterinary Pharmacy and Hagyard Pharmacy. Cont. p7

For those who wish to contribute, donations boxes are
available at each of the tree
host locations, as well as the
Secretariat Center office lobby.
Supply donations can also be
made online through Amazon
Smile and monetary donations
can be made here.
The Secretariat Center sits on
22 acres at the Kentucky Horse
Park and features various
paddocks, riding arenas, a
round pen and a 10-stall barn.
The program typically houses
between 10 and 15 horses.
While inquiring adopters are
usually permitted to visit the
facility and ride available
horses, the process has been
hindered this year due to the
pandemic and ongoing travel restrictions. Mann and her team
have had to adapt in order to continue adopting out their
trainees.
AWe do a lot of communications through live videos. Trainers
can sit in on the calls. It=s been interesting to be able to branch
out and think of new ways to
find homes for these horses.@
One 3-year-old mare has
been adopted out through
online communication and will
be going to her new home,
quite appropriately, right
before the holidays begin.
AChristmas Pickles (Awesome
Again) has been very popular
since we have put her up for
adoption,@ Mann said. AShe=s a
big girl at 17 hands, and was
just recently adopted. She will
be moving to North Carolina
and will be our closest thing to
a Christmas delivery.@
Mann said that with their
location at the Kentucky Horse
Park, she believes their team has a unique opportunity in terms
of educating both the public and the industry on aftercare.

AIt=s wonderful being here,@ she said. AEducation is really a
focus of ours, whether it=s working within the industry with
owners and trainers to educate on options for these horses after
they=re done racing or reaching out to other facilities that want
to promote and educate on aftercare.@
As she looks ahead to the new year, Mann said her team has
even bigger goals for 2021.
AWe have so many plans,@ she said. AWe=re so excited, but I
would say really we=re trying to focus on how we can do things
better in terms of increasing our outreach through education
and within our community so that anyone that goes through the
Secretariat Center has a memorable, positive experience.@

R WORKING GIRL (f, 2, Outwork--Collar, by Candy Ride {Arg}),
the 8-5 favorite, pulled her way to the early lead and was clear
after a quarter in :22.67. She shrugged off a pair of runners at
midstretch and just held off the late-closing Maracuja (Honor
Code) to graduate by a neck. R Working Girl, the 19th winner for
her freshman sire (by Uncle Mo), was a $100,000 KEESEP
yearling. Collar produced a filly by Mo Town in 2020 and was

OVERTOOK (c, 2, Curlin--Got Lucky {GISW, $951,340}, by A.P.
Indy), a $1-million KEESEP yearling purchase, was fourth going
six furlongs on debut at Belmont Oct. 10 and was third--beaten
21 lengths--when stretched to nine furlongs at this oval Nov. 8.
Shedding the blinkers for this third go, the 5-1 shot was taken in
hand soon after the break and settled near the back of the pack.
He began picking up foes on the turn, swept up five wide into
the stretch and closed with a late flourish to win by two lengths.
Gwaun River Valley (Blame) was second. Grade I winner Got
Lucky produced a filly by Curlin last year and a colt by Arrogate
this year. She was bred back to Ghostzapper. Click for the

RIFT VALLEY (c, 3, PioneeroftheNile--Score, by A.P. Indy) had an
eventful first out Nov. 12 going six panels over this surface,
hitting the gate at the break and racing several paths wide
throughout to finish fourth. Sent off at just under 3-1 to improve
off that effort and a Dec. 9 five-furlong bullet at Belmont in 1:01
4/5 (1/13), the 2018 Fasig-Tipton New York-bred topper was a
little rank out of the gate, throwing his head, and found himself
at the back of the pack. The bay stayed on the inside and was no
better than ninth through a quarter in :22.75 and a half in
:46.53. Moving resolutely on the turn, he swung wide and still
looked well beaten a sixteenth from home, then dug in down
the stretch to edge clear by 1 1/2 lengths in the final yards. First-
time starter King Angelo (Lemon Drop Kid) filled the runner-up
spot. Rift Valley is a half to Dattt Melody (Unbridled's Song), SP,
$332,007; as well as to GSP Timely Tally (Mr. Greeley). Dam
Score hasn=t produced a live foal since Rift Valley, but was bred
to Classic Empire for next term. She is out of MGISW Educated

O BESOS (c, 2, Orb--Snuggs and Kisses {SW, $288,020}, by
Soto), sixth in his 6 1/2-furlong bow over a sloppy main track at
Churchill Nov. 22, was sent off at 7-2. Away awkwardly, the
chestnut colt was last early and was well back as a pair of
runaway leaders zipped through the opening quarter in :21.66
and a half in :45.47. He reeled in the pacesetters down the lane
and strode clear to win by 5 1/2 lengths. Favored
Unitedandresolute (Violence), who had contested the pace, held
on to be second. O Besos is a half-brother to Transatlantic Kiss
(Stormy Atlantic), SP, $203,516. Snuggs and Kisses produced
colts by California Chrome in 2019 and 2020 and was bred back

WILL'S SECRET (f, 2, Will Take Charge--Girls Secret, by Giant's

maiden, made the 700-mile trek south from Louisville to NOLA.
Breaking from the extreme outside, she stayed widest of the
strung-out field while midpack. Moved up to third before a
:48.48 half, the 5-2 favorite inched clear under encouragement
down the lane for a 2 3/4-length win over Adventuring
(Pioneerof the Nile). The homebred is the first foal out of her
dam, who has a yearling full-brother to the winner and a
weanling colt by Hard Spun in the pipeline. Girls Secret, who was
bred back to Hard Spun for next term, is out of GSW & MGISP

early lead, skipped clear into the stretch and reported home a 1

1/4 lengths.
ZAAJEL (f, 2, Street Sense--Asiya {MSP, $136,200}, by Daaher),
sent off at 3-1, was outfooted in the early strides, but improved
her position down the backstretch. Within striking distance
approaching the stretch, the bay filly stuck a head in front at the
top of the lane and glided clear to win by a geared-down 7 1/4
lengths. Stablemate Unbridled d=Oro (Medaglia d=Oro) closed to
be second.
AShe=d been training forwardly,@ said winning trainer Todd
Pletcher. AShe was a half-step slow from the gate the other
morning--she tossed her head a little at the break. We stood her
a few times and she was good, so we went ahead and ran her
today, thinking she was ready to go,@ Pletcher said. ASeven
furlongs is a good starting point for her.@
As for what is next for the Shadwell homebred, Pletcher said,
AWe=ll play it by ear. She=s clearly a filly that wants more
distance. That=s always exciting when you have one break their
maiden at a shorter distance.@
Zaajel is a half-sister to 2019 GII Remsen S. runner-up
Ajaaweed (Curlin), MGSP, $139,850. Asiya, who sold for $16,000
while in foal to Mohaymen at the 2018 Keeneland November
sale, was bred to Blame this year.
Pletcher saddled another impressive Shadwell homebred
debut winner last week at Gulfstream with Arham (Union Rags)
coming home seven lengths the best in Hallandale last Thursday.

Lot 663A, one of three foals by Frankel to co-top
Sunday=s session at Goffs | Goffs
FRANKEL FOALS HEADGOFFS MARKET
By Daithi Harvey
KILDARE, Ireland--It was a case of saving the best until last as
the Goffs November Foal Sale finished with a flourish on Sunday
evening. Despite a few high-profile withdrawals, there were still
plenty of highly sought after lots on offer and it was three foals
by Frankel (GB) who shared the honour of co-top lots with each
commanding i440,000. While there may not have been the
depth of trade evident in previous editions, the session was
underpinned by a solid clearance rate of 82%, with 135 foals
sold for a total of i10,374,000. The average for the day was
i76,844, while a median price of i52,000 was recorded. There
were 47 six-figure transactions on day three of last year=s record
sale, and 28 on Sunday.
Frankel fever began to set in around mid-afternoon and it was
ignited by the sale of the supplementary lot 663A. The brilliant
Juddmonte stallion sired Grenadier Guards (Jpn), the winner of
the G1 Asahi Hai Futurity in Japan on Sunday morning, and that
fact wasn't lost on Harry Sweeney, who signed the buyer's
docket. The son of the multiple stakes winner Lily's Angel (Ire)
(Dark Angel {Ire}) will make his way to Sweeney's Paca Paca
Farm in Japan where Sweeney hopes he will build on his sire's
impressive record.

FRANKEL=S GRENADIER GUARDS UP FOR
ASAHI HAI WIN Grenadier Guards (Jpn), the first foal out of the 2015
GI Breeders= Cup Filly & Mare Sprint winner Wavell Avenue
(Harlington), became Frankel=s 12th Group 1 winner in Sunday=s
G1 Asahi Hai Futurity S. in Japan. Stalking the pace off the
six-length lead set by Mondreise (Jpn) (Daiwa Major {Jpn}),
Grenadier Guards was poised in second by the time they
straightened. Grenadier Guards gradually cut down that rival=s
advantage in the lane, hit the lead at the furlong marker and
held off a rallying Stella Volce (Jpn) (Bago {Fr}) to win by three-
quarters of a length in track record time. Favoured Red Belle
Aube (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) traveled further back and keenly
early before making up late ground to grab third.
Grenadier Guards was making his fourth start for trainer
Mitsumasa Nakauchida. Cont. p11

Lot 673, a Frankel filly | Goffs
Frankel Foals Head Goffs Market cont. from p1
"Frankel has been quite successful in Japan; they are big strong
horses and they seem to operate well there,@ Sweeney said. AI
hoped to get this one for slightly less but he is a fine foal and we
look forward to getting him home.@
The next Frankel foal that
entered the ring brought the
exact same price when knocked
down to online bidder Blackstar
Bloodstock. Lot 673 was
consigned by Des Leadon and
Mariann Klay's Swordlestown
Little Stud and was bred by
Graeng Bloodstock Ltd out of the
G3 Brownstown S. winner
Marvada (Ire) (Elusive City). The
mare has already bred the top
class G2 Dahlia S. winner and G1
Queen Anne S. runner up
Terebellum (Ire) (Sea The Stars
{Ire}), while Marvada's 2-year-old Miss Finland (Ire) (Invincible
Spirit {Ire}) broke her maiden recently for John Gosden. It was
an intense half hour for Swordlestown Little as no sooner had
the dust settled on lot 673 than they were back in the ring with
another Frankel colt,
lot 684. This colt was bred by Leadon and Klay out of Nisriyna
(Ire) (Intikhab) and completed the Frankel i440,000 trifecta,
this time to the bid of Juddmonte's Barry Mahon. The
13-year-old Nisriyna has been a star for Swordlestown Little and
is the dam of the former prolific Hong Kong runner Dinozzo (Ire)
(Lilbourne Lad {Ire}), who after
amassing over ,1.1-million in his
racing career was repatriated
back to Swordlestown Little to
spend an honourable
retirement.
"It's been some rollercoaster,"
said Leadon after the second of
his headline sales. "We think the
world of this Nisriyna colt, he
looks a proper racehorse and he
really took to this new
environment like a duck to
water. Nothing seems to faze
him. It's a wonderful family and
the mare really deserved an upgrade in the type of stallion she
was visiting. We were delighted that her 2-year-old Qaasid (Ire)
(Awtaad {Ire}) recently got off the mark for Sir Michael Stoute,
who is a dear friend of ours, and we are thrilled that Juddmonte
have bought this foal.@

Gerard Lowry of Oneliner Stables | Tattersalls
Barry Mahon had been underbidder on an Expert Eye (GB) foal
earlier in the session and was determined not to leave without
this one. "Prince Khalid was very keen on this colt and he looks a
good fit for the Juddmonte programme,@ Mahon said. AHe also
came from a top farm and was beautifully prepped. Frankel has
become a true international sire with the horse in Japan this
morning another example of what he can do and it's great for
Irish breeders who have supported him to be rewarded like
this.@
In a flurry of Frankel sales, lot 685 rewarded the perseverance
of successful buyer Gerard Lowry of Oneliner Stables. Lowry had
tried hard to buy the previous lot but was more than happy to
come away with this son of Noyelles (Ire) (Docksider) when the
hammer dropped at i360,000. Similarly bred to the first Frankel
sold being a half-brother to Lily's Angel (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}),
this colt was consigned by Neilstown Stud on behalf of the foal's
breeders Nick and Alice Nugent.
"Both Frankels were top of our list so we're delighted to get
this one," Gerard Lowry said. "Frankel is a global commodity,
this horse is a half-brother to two good fillies and he will be back
for resale next year."
There may not have been as much international
representation as in previous years at this sale, but that didn't
prevent Goffs Scandinavian agent Filip Zwicky getting stuck in on
behalf of clients. His purchases were headed by lot 707, a
Footstepsinthesand (GB) half-brother to G1 Keeneland Phoenix
S. winner Lucky Vega (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) that cost
i300,000. Consigned by Baroda Stud, the colt is a grandson of
G1 Prix de l'Opera winner Satwa Queen (Fr) (Muhtathir {GB}),
and while bought for Scandinavian interests he will be making
an appearance at Goffs again next year.

Henry Beeby feeling festive on the rostrum | Goffs
"I bought him for the owner of Swedish Derby winner Bullof
Wall Street (Tapizar), who we bought in the Orby two years
ago,@ Zwicky said. AThis is the owner's first pinhook and the
horse will come back here for the Orby next year.@
Philipp Stauffenberg is
another who is no stranger to
paying big money for foals to
resell and more often than not
the gamble pays off. He struck
for lot 659, a No Nay Never
full-sister to both GII Mrs
Revere S. winner Nay Lady
Nay (Ire) and G2 Coventry S.
winner Arizona (Ire). The
Ballintry Stud-consigned filly
set Stauffenberg back
i260,000, but with a
pedigree that also features
two individual champions
further down in Bright
Generation (Ire) (Rainbow Quest) and Dabirsim (Fr) (Hat Trick
{Jpn}), the filly looks well bought. Bred by Stephen Sullivan out
of Lady Ederle (English Channel), the sale is the latest success
story for the mare that keeps on giving.
Sullivan bought the mare in Keeneland eight years ago for
$27,000 and is beginning to really reap the rewards from the
11-year-old.
"I'm delighted, Lady Ederle is turning into a real cash cow but
all credit to Joe [Rogers] and his
team at Ballintry Stud,@ Sullivan
said. AHe looks after the foals so
well and I would recommend
him to anyone. The mare is in
foal to Frankel (GB) and I
imagine we'll see that foal back
here hopefully next year. Goffs
do a great job and despite
everything happening we are
here trading horses.@

Consignment already had good
credentials being an
Acclamation (GB) half-brother
to two fast stakes horses in K

However, there could be more to come from the family next
year particularly from a yearling half-sister by Mehmas (Ire) that
cost ,330,000 at the Orby Sale in Doncaster and goes into
training with Joseph O'Brien.
That was surely at the forefront of JC Bloodstock's Mick
Fitzpatrick's mind as he traded bids with Gay O'Callaghan with
Fitzpatrick eventually winning the battle with a bid of i195,000.
The foal was bred by Horse Racing Ireland Chairman Nick
Hartery out of the mare Big Boned (Street Sense), who has
proved a fine investment since being purchased at Goffs in 2014
by Rathasker Stud for i27,000.
Mick Fitzpatrick added to Kilminfoyle's pinhooking squad for
next year when seeing off a parade ring bidder to secure lot 603
for i225,000. The strapping Camelot (GB) colt offered by Oghill
House Stud is a full-brother to the very smart Ado McGuinness-
trained Current Option (Ire) and Fitzpatrick said, "He is a very
nice foal by a proven stallion and is a brother to a good horse so
he ticks plenty of boxes."
For the foal's breeder Craig English it was a fine return as he
only bought the mare Coppertop (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus})
at this sale last year for i50,000. She was carrying this foal at
the time and in the meantime Current Option (Ire) has won a
premier handicap at Galway, a listed race at Cork and the
G3 Concorde S. at Tipperary, exploits which have seen his rating
climb to 107.
Another Camelot (GB) foal to find favour was lot 708. Bred by
Kilcarn Stud, the full-sister to stakes winner Fighting Irish (Ire)
was bought by Peter and Ross Doyle for i185,000. Camelot's
popularity was again evident when Oaklawn Stud's filly, lot 735,
was bought by Highbank Stud for i190,000.
Former Curragh trainer Takashi Kodama stepped in to
purchase lot 649 on behalf of Japan=s Big Red Farm. The Irish
National Stud-consigned son of Invincible Spirit (Ire) cost
i210,000 and is a half-brother to a pair of stakes winners by
Sea The Stars (Ire) in Chemical Charge (Ire) and Dalgarno (Fr),
while the early pace was set by a son of Kodiac (GB) bought by
the Tally-Ho team for i190,000. Bred by Michael Ryan and
consigned by his Dungarvan-based Al Eile Stud, lot 567 is a
grandson of Ryan's brilliant dual 1000 Guineas winner Finsceal
Beo (Ire) (Mr Greely) and out of the winning Galileo mare An
Cailin Orga (Ire).
The Goffs November Sale and indeed the reshuffled Irish 2020
sales calendar culminates with the single-session breeding stock
sale which begins at 10 a.m. on Monday.

643 c Exceed and Excel (Aus) Indigo Butterfly (Fr) 100,000
Consigned by Ballinacurra Stud
Purchased by Camas Park Stud
Indigo Butterfly went winless in her racing career, but since
being purchased for i21,000 at the Arqana December sale in
2016 she has benefitted from some big pedigree updates. Her
half-sister Sand Vixen (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), the G2 Flying Childers
S. winner, has produced the G1 Jebel Hatta S. scorer Dream
Castle (GB) (Frankel {GB}). Breeder Denis McCarthy sold Indigo
Butterfly=s first foal, a filly by Gleneagles (Ire), for i52,000 at
this sale last year and hit another home run with her second foal
on Sunday.
698 c Dandy Man (Ire) Plying 80,000
Consigned by Jossestown Farm
Purchased by Ballyhane
As profiled in Saturday=s TDN, Martin Cooney purchased Plying
at Goffs November in 2018 for i21,000 in foal to
Starspangledbanner (Aus). The mare at the time had two foals of
racing age and no winners, but that soon changed with
Alexander James (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) winning at listed level in
France and Alcohol Free (Ire) (No Nay Never) providing the
ultimate update when winning this year=s G1 Cheveley Park S.
Cooney had, in the meantime, already profited from the mare
when selling her Starspangledbanner filly for i40,000 at Goffs
February this year, and he is now well ahead with her. Plying is
in foal to Gleneagles (Ire).
724 f Sioux Nation Sonning Rose (Ire) 140,000
Consigned by Albany Stud
Purchased by Altenbach Bloodstock
John Ryan stole the barren Listed Chesham S. second Sonning
Rose for just i2,800 at Goffs February last year. The 12-year-old
mare was put in foal to first-season sire Sioux Nation shortly
thereafter. Sonning Rose=s 2-year-old filly Elysium (Ire) (Belardo
{Ire}) won the G3 Park S. since the catalogue was printed, and
the mare=s connections reaped the rewards on Sunday.
735 f Camelot (GB) Stealth Missile (Ire) 190,000
Consigned by Oaklawn Stud
Purchased by Highbank Stud
The dual winner Stealth Missile (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) was
plucked out of the Tattersalls February Sale in 2015 for
35,000gns. Her 3-year-old half-sister at the time had run just
once, but she evolved to be Covert Love (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}),
winner of the 2015 G1 Irish Oaks and G1 Prix de l=Opera. Plenty
of value, then, was added to Stealth Missile, and this filly
provided yet another good transaction following a colt by Dansili
(GB) (80,000gns yearling) and a colt and a filly each by Sea The
Stars (Ire) (i240,000 foal and i160,000 foal).

CRAPS (FR) (c, 2, Wootton Bassett {GB}--Ironique, by Smart
Strike) was swiftly into stride and led from the outset of this first
go. In command throughout, the 11-10 favourite was shaken up
with 350 metres remaining and stayed on powerfully under mild
coaxing in the closing stages to easily outclass Dark Ocean (Fr)
(Exosphere {Aus}) by a geared-down three lengths. He is the
second of four foals and first scorer produced by an unraced
daughter of G3 Prix Eclipse victress Iron Lips (GB) (Iron Mask),
herself a half-sister to G1 Poule d=Essai des Poulains-winning sire

LAYLANA (FR) (f, 2, Footstepsinthesand {GB}--Lidiyana {Fr}, by
Motivator {GB}) was caught snoozing at the break and forfeited
ground to all 12 rivals, racing out back as the riderless Valarica
(Fr) (Cat Junior) threatened to wreak havoc after parting with
jockey Lucas Armand. Still in rear when stoked into action off
the home turn, the 36-5 chance was relentless under continued
cajoling in the straight and surged by Attasha (GB) (Le Havre
{Ire}) in the dying strides en route to an ultimately comfortable
one-length success. She is the second foal and scorer out of a
winning half-sister to G2 Blamey S. victor Lidari (Fr) (Acclamation
