the school closed its doors in1956 and its students werebused to Dover School as partof integration efforts.
“Our teachers were strict. We had raggedy books, butthe teachers made you study,”House said of her experienceat the school. “A lot of edu-cated people came out of thatschool. Its graduates went onto become doctors, lawyers, teachers and one became asenator from Kansas.”
The Church of God (Sev-enth Day) bought the schoolproperty in 1957 for a familycamp. The school buildinghad been partially remodeledby combining two of the class-rooms, tiling the floors, insu-lating, putting up newsheetrock and redoing theroof.
They were in the processof building a new 60x80 footchapel and had stored muchof the building materials inthe school.
The school building nolonger exists, but thanks tothe dedication of many formerstudents, its history will liveon for a long time to come.
The Booker T. Washingtonschool reunion organizationhas created publications tell-ing the school’s history withpictures of former studentsand administration. Thegroup meets every two yearsat Dover to share stories andkeep in touch.
“We got together in 2011.There were over 100 who at-tended from all over the U.S.Ruelle Kinslow sponsored abus tour of Dover which in-cluded Booker T. Washing-ton School. The bus was full,”House said.
“I walked into the gymna-sium at the school and couldvisualize how we would have

A certified personaltrainer, Koehn has had to closeher Kingfisher studio to stayhome with her daughter andtransport her to a myriad ofmedical appointments.
“She was accepted to theOU Diagnostic Center for rareand special cases,” Koehnsaid. “They are the gatewayto being seen by specialist thatcan help you to either get adiagnosis or get treatment.”
An immunologist with ex-perience with mast cell acti-vation treated Tysen duringher most recent hospitaliza-tion and has ordered addi-tional testing as well as a dailymedicine specifically to treatthe disorder which is expen-sive and hard to obtain, Koehnsaid.
“We were told that she willbe sent to John Hopkins, Na-tional Institute of Health or aMayo Clinic depending on re-sults from biopsies and othertest results,” Koehn said.
Meanwhile, medical ex-penses continue to mountwhile Koehn is restricted toworking from home as shecan to help bring in some in-come.
An account has been setupto help with medical expensesand donations can be madedirectly to NBC Bank, 801 S.
A total of 15 firefightersfrom three departments spentnearly six hours extinguish-ing the Sunday morning blazeat the former Booker T. Wash-ington School building eastof Dover.
Dover Fire Chief BobbyGardner said his departmentwas paged out about 3:48 a.m.Sunday and arrived at thescene about 4:10 a.m. withfour units and 12 firefighters.
Kingfisher and Hennesseyfire departments also senttanker trucks and personnelto help fight the fire, he said.
The historical brick struc-ture, currently owned by theChurch of God (Seventh Day),was a total loss, Gardner said.
The building was not in-sured, he said.
The cause of the fire hasnot been determined, Gardnersaid.
The school fire was an earlystart of a long day for theDover Volunteer Fire Depart-ment.
“We got back to the stationabout 10 a.m. and immedi-ately had two medical callswe had to go out on,” he said.

Although the fire pre-vented what was to be an-other tour of the school build-ing in 2015, former studentsmay still gather at the build-ing site to share their memo-
ries of the school, members ofthe reunion committee said.
Artifacts spared in the fire, including the bell and the lin-tel stone over the doorwayengraved with the school’sname, have been stored awayand may be used at some pointto create a memorial on thesite.
