We had raggedy books, but the teachers made you study,” House said of her experience at the school. “A lot of edu- cated people came out of that school. Its graduates went on to become doctors, lawyers, teachers and one became a senator from Kansas.” The Church of God (Sev- enth Day) bought the school property in 1957 for a family camp. The school building had been partially remodeled by combining two of the class- rooms, tiling the floors, insu- lating, putting up new sheetrock and redoing the roof. They were in the process of building a new 60x80 foot chapel and had stored much of the building materials in the school. The school building no longer exists, but thanks to the dedication of many former students, its history will live on for a long time to come. The Booker T. Washington school reunion organization has created publications tell- ing the school’s history with pictures of former students and administration. A total of 15 firefighters from three departments spent nearly six hours extinguish- ing the Sunday morning blaze at the former Booker T. Wash- ington School building east of Dover. Dover Fire Chief Bobby Gardner said his department was paged out about 3:48 a.m. Sunday and arrived at the scene about 4:10 a.m. with four units and 12 firefighters. Kingfisher and Hennessey fire departments also sent tanker trucks and personnel to help fight the fire, he said. The historical brick struc- ture, currently owned by the Church of God (Seventh Day), was a total loss, Gardner said. The building was not in- sured, he said. The cause of the fire has not been determined, Gardner said. The school fire was an early start of a long day for the Dover Volunteer Fire Depart- ment. “We got back to the station about 10 a.m. and immedi- ately had two medical calls we had to go out on,” he said.
