About WoodWorks
Advanced Diaphragm Analysis WorkshopA Technical Presentation of Complex Diaphragms
Terry Malone, PE, SE, Senior Technical Director, WoodWorks
COURSE DESCRIPTION
T he structural configurations of many modern
buildings require complex lateral load paths that
incorporate diaphragms at different elevations,
multiple re-entrant corners, multiple irregularities
and fewer vertical lateral force-resisting elements.
It is important to address these design issues and
irregularities to ensure complete load paths throughout
the structure. This workshop provides discussions
on how to analyze offset diaphragms in wood-frame
buildings, in-plane and out-of-plane offset shear walls,
and diaphragms with large openings. Code sections
and irregularities associated with these types of
lateral-resisting elements will be discussed.
Free design and engineering support for wood buildings
WoodWorks provides free resources
related to the code-compliant design,
engineering and construction of
non-residential and multi-family
wood buildings. For project
assistance, visit woodworks.org
or email [email protected].

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1. Discover a method of analysis that can be used to analyze complex diaphragms and shear walls.
2. Consider how to analyze various types of in-plane and out-of-plane offset shear walls, offset diaphragms and diaphragms with large openings.
3. Discuss code irregularities associated with offset diaphragms and shear walls, and diaphragms with large openings.
4. Determine when an opening in a diaphragm is large enough to require a detailed analysis.
Terry Malone is a licensed structural engineer in Washington, Oregon and Arizona. Prior to joining WoodWorks, he was a principal of consulting structural engineering firms in Washington and Oregon, conducted third-party structural plan reviews and served as a faculty member at St. Martin’s College in Lacey, Washington. Terry has over 35 years of wood design experience and has taken an active role as a presenter, providing seminars at state and local International Code Council (ICC) chapters and professional engineering organizations. Terry is author of The Analysis of Irregular Shaped Structures: Diaphragms and Shear Walls, published by McGraw-Hill and the ICC. He is a member of the Structural Engineers’ Association of Arizona and the ICC.
