“Every man should be born again on the first day of January. Start with a fresh page. Take up one hole more in the buckle if necessary, or let down one, according to circumstances;but on the first of January let every man gird himself once more, with his face to the front,
and take no interest in the things that were and are past.” — Henry Ward Beecher

• Accredited with Performance Plan – meeting or exceeding stateperformance targets
• Accredited with Improvement Plan – approaching or meeting stateperformance targets
• Accredited with Priority Improvement Plan – not meeting state tar-gets, requires state supervision and rapid improvement
• Accredited with Turnaround Plan – school performance is wellbelow state targets and state intervention is required 95 percent of Cherry Creek schools are in the highest category,
Accredited with Performance Plan, compared to 70% of schoolsstatewide. Five percent of Cherry Creek schools (3 schools) are in thesecond highest category, Accredited with Improvement Plan, comparedto about 18% of schools statewide. No Cherry Creek schools are in thebottom two categories. “This is strong evidence that Cherry Creek con-tinues to be a high-performing school district,” said Board of EducationPresident Jennifer Churchfield. “It affirms the work we are doing toraise the academic achievement of all students, and ensure that everystudent is college and workforce ready.” The accreditation categoriesare based on the School Performance Framework, which was developedby CDE in response to Senate Bill 163. The law identifies four indica-tors which must be included in the SPF:• Achievement (percent of students scoring proficient or advanced onCSAP tests)
• Growth (how much growth students displayed on CSAP from lastyear)
• Growth Gaps (achievement differentiated by race free and reducedlunch, special education and English language proficiency)
• College and Workforce Readiness (ACT scores, graduation rate anddropout rate)
The Cherry Creek School District has developed its owninternal system of performance indicators based in part on theSPF, but using a more rigorous standard for identifying theachievement gap and college readiness. The state groupsAsian students with African American and Hispanic studentsand other students of color. Because Asian students typicallyscore as high, or higher, than white students, their scoresmake the achievement gap seem smaller than it really is.Therefore, Cherry Creek examines the differences in academ-ic achievement and growth between white and Asian studentsand African American and Hispanic students, which providesmore accurate information about the achievement gap.
Under SB 163, school districts are accredited by the stateand districts accredit their schools. School districts may adoptthe School Performance Framework for accrediting theirschools or may develop their own process. The Cherry CreekSchool District has decided to use the state’s categories foraccrediting each of its schools to create a consistent system. The district received a rating of accredited by the state. Parents can view their individual school’s report at
www.schoolview.org.

How To Make Resolutions You’ll Actually KeepMaking a New Year’s resolution is like setting any other type
of goal. You have to choose wisely if you want to achieve some-thing significant. Remember that a good resolution, like a solidgoal, usually has a few definable characteristics:• Focus. Set a definite target: “Lose 10 pounds by June” isbetter than “Lose some weight.”
• Challenge. Your resolution should be neither too hard, nortoo easy.
• Commitment. Share your resolutions with others who willhelp you work on them.
• Presence. Write down your resolutions in detail, and postyour list where you’ll see it often.
• Vision. Visualize the results you want to achieve everyday.
Sometimes A Hug Trumps A FightThe next time your small child throws a temper tantrum, try
giving him or her a hug instead of a lecture. You might be sur-prised at how effective a hug can be in quieting a child in themidst of a meltdown. Hugs can defuse a child’s hurt or anger, making it easier for
him or her to listen to what you have to say. Once calm, yourchild can take part in a larger discussion about the problem andhis or her behavior. Children do better when they feel secure andloved, no matter what.

STUDENTS HONOR VETERANS DURING PUEBLO VISITHeartfelt words of thanks and an emotional father-son reunion
were all part of a special day for 11 students from the CherryCreek School District, selected as winners of the district’sVeterans Week Essay Contest. On December 7, the 70th anniver-sary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the students, along withclassmates and family members, visited the Walk of Valor and theCenter for American Values in Pueblo, Colorado. They read theiressays during a special ceremony at the Center, which was found-ed by Medal of Honor recipient and Pueblo native, Drew Dix.
Pueblo is known as the “Home of Heroes” because it is home tofour Medal of Honor recipients.Indian Ridge first grader Kaden Lopez got a big surprise after
reading his essay about his father, a Lt. Commander in the U.S.Navy who is currently stationed in Djibouti, Africa. Thanks to aSkype videoconference arranged by the center and the district,Kaden was able to talk with his father, who told Kaden he wasvery proud of him. It brought tears to the eyes of nearly every-one in the audience. Dry Creek fifth grader Alison Chen enjoyed the outdoor
exhibits along the Walk of Valor, part of the Pueblo River Walk,as well as the portraits of Medal of Honor recipients, which areon display in the Center for American Values.“It’s really amazing how they honor these veterans who were
willing to give up their freedom and safety for us,” said AubreyLeFebre, an eighth grader at West Middle School.Parent Anna Bekerman said the experience was a valuable
one for her daughter, Alyssa, a sophomore at Overland HighSchool. “It’s given her more insight and knowledge of veterans.Real learning. I think it will affect her for the rest of her life.”See photos from the Pueblo visit and Veterans Week on the

This Year, Resolve To Do Something DifferentIt’s January again. Have you made your New Year’s resolutions yet?
Maybe this is the year to forget the boring, routine promises you won’tkeep, like going to the gym every day and calling your parents once aweek. Try resolving to be more creative in 2012 with these resolutions:
• Keep a journal. Spend a few minutes every day or so writingdown your thoughts, feelings, dreams, and ambitions – not yourdaily schedule or your upcoming appointments. Let your mindwander; free-associate a little. You may be surprised at the ideasyou generate.
• Read more. Vary your reading habits and explore different top-ics. If you usually read novels, try a biography. If you read onlyhistory, try a book on modern-day science. You’ll exercise yourmind, and maybe find new connections between ideas.
• Learn something new. Take a class in something unrelated toyour job or your usual hobbies – art, auto mechanics, philosophy, etc. Mastering new skills can refresh your outlook on life.
• Meet new people. Make a positive effort to makenew friends this year (or professional contacts).Look for gatherings of people whose interests matchyours, and network. The more people you know, thebetter equipped you are to learn and grow.
• Create something for the heck of it. Paint a pic-ture, write a poem, or start a garden – not becauseyou’ll get paid for it, but because you want to. You’llfind satisfaction in achieving personal goals andmotivation to keep trying new things.
• Volunteer. Find a cause you support, and offer yourtime and service. You’ll meet new people and enjoythe feeling of helping out with an important cause.
