On behalf of Sandpipers, it is my pleasure to welcome you to our Sandpipers Annual Fashion Show & Luncheon. This year Sandpipers is celebrating its 85th anniversary, and today we are pleased to present our 25th Annual Fashion Show & Luncheon. Because we are a 100% volunteer organization, the proceeds earned today from your ticket purchase and from your boutique and auction purchases constitute the funds we use to support our philanthropic programs, which are devoted exclusively and solely to assisting persons and families in desperate need who live in our South Bay community. We are truly grateful to have your support for our philanthropic endeavors.
For our 25th Fashion Show, we are thrilled to showcase the spring and summer 2017 collection by Ted Baker. We have
truly enjoyed and have been exceedingly fortunate to have this fantastic partnership and the collaboration and enthusiasm of their entire team. Thanks to Ted Baker!
A huge thank you also is due to our sponsors and donors for making today possible and for helping us reach our philanthropic goals. Thank you to the staff of the Beverly Wilshire Hotel for your acute attention to detail, which is second to none. Thanks to the production team for taking today’s show to the next level; to Rolling Hills Flower Mart for the beautiful floral arrangements; and to all of the local artisans and vendors whose talents and masterpieces are on full display in the Boutique. We are grateful for and humbled by these partnerships and the generous support each of you provide to our local community through Sandpipers.
A special thanks to each of our Spring Events Committees that have been hard at work under the leadership of our Director of Spring Events, Jackie Pomahac, our Sponsorships VP, Tiffany Quick, our Marketing VP, Stephanie Uchima-Carney, our Director of Public Relations, Gina Callari, and our Finance VP, Heather Walsh. I also would like to thank our two Fashion Show Co-Chairs, Traci Radcliffe and Sarah Steinmeier, and the entire Fashion Show Committee. Together, this amazing group of Sandpipers has planned, executed and managed every aspect of today’s fabulous event. Thank you also to our tireless Auction Team led by Co-Chairs, Kathy Clarke, Jenny Stewart and Anne Tittle. This committee has been working hard launching our new mobile bidding platform and – of course – putting together the amazing silent and live auction packages that we are offering this year. Thank you to our Events Program Co-Chairs, Courtney Moss and Lisa Quarello, and to their committee for the beautiful Fashion Show Program.
Please make time to browse the Boutique this morning. Our Boutique Co-Chairs, Jill Christianne and Molly Komick, have spent months developing partnerships with local artisans and vendors whose merchandise is on display and available for purchase. As a reminder, 25% of all proceeds earned from Boutique sales are donated to Sandpipers. Thank you to our Fundraising Financial Committee being led by Laura Brodeur and Sharmila Garg for processing and tracking all the boutique purchases today.
And finally, a huge thank you to each of you for spending your day with us and for helping continue our 85-year tradition of friendship, philanthropy and fundraising for those in need in the South Bay.
With Love,
Lee-Meredith HowardSandpipers 85th President

Our mission: “Sandpipers is a 100% volunteer organization dedicated to serving the needs of the South Bay community through charitable and philanthropic programs.”
Since 1931, Sandpipers has been providing assistance to individuals and families in need. For the 2015-2016 year, Sandpipers distributed roughly $635,000 into the South Bay community.
Partnering with 60 local agencies, our programs give a hand up to individuals and families who have suffered a crisis and are taking the necessary steps to rebuild their lives. Revenues from the Fashion Show support all of our philanthropic programs.
The agencies we partner with provide daily support for individuals and families in need by providing the following services: crisis intervention, enrichment services, health services, and support for the mentally and physically disabled and working poor families.
A brief look into some of Sandpipers’ Philanthropic Programs:
SANDPIPERS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM: This program was established in 1941, and is the oldest continuing aid program in the South Bay. It provides funding for qualifying students for four years of undergraduate studies. For the 2016 school year, Sandpipers provided close to $236,000 in scholarships to 45 students.
EMERGENCY CASEWORK: Provides immediate and confidential assistance to members of our community that are referred to us by our partner agencies. This assistance can range from Ralphs’ scrip to help with monthly grocery expenses, to medical care in the form of payment for dentures or other needed prescriptive items, to payment of household rent or purchasing uniforms for school and/or work. This year we are devoting $20,000 to this emergency service.
BACK TO SCHOOL SHOPPING: Established in 1999, Back to School Shopping has grown to serve over 70 children each year. Last August, Sandpipers shopped with 76 children ages 5 – 12, for school clothes, shoes and supplies. Each child received approximately $250 worth of clothes, a backpack full of supplies, and a lunch box full of goodies.
HOLIDAY BASKETS: This is our founding program, which began in 1931, and it continues to grow year-after-year. Last December we provided approximately 100 “baskets” to local families that will consist of a carload full of new toys, new clothes, Ralphs’ scrip, Payless Shoes gift cards and a myriad of other household supplies like towels, sheets, blankets, pillows, cleaning supplies and kitchen goods.
SUGARPLUM TREE: Each year Sandpipers partners with the LA County Department of Children & Family Services to provide approximately 1,500 toys to children in foster care.
Through the work of Sandpipers year after year, we perform well over 1,800 hours of community service and touch the lives of more than 24,000 individuals. We also work to provide assistance weekly by delivering meals to domestic violence shelters, participating in Meals on Wheels deliveries, assisting with paperwork at dental clinics, providing snacks for after school programs, and purchasing and delivering undergarments, desserts, milk and groceries to those in need.

BACK TO SCHOOL SHOPPING Over 100 Sandpipers Actives, Provisionals and Juniors gathered on Sunday, August 21st at Kohl’s Department Store for our annual Back to School Shopping event. Sandpiper volunteers were paired with over 70 kids from 9 different agencies around the South Bay to shop for back to school clothes. Each child received a $200 gift card to shop and Kohl’s kindly offered a 20% discount and tax-free shopping. The children also received a lunchbox filled with goodies that was generously donated by Xerox. Each Back to School participant also received a backpack loaded to the brim with school supplies for the year.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAMS
DONE IN A DAY PROJECTSEach year, our Community Outreach committee organizes hands-on projects for our members. Over three weekends in January and March, the Community Outreach Committee repainted the hallway and conference room at Mychal’s Learning Place and transformed the agency’s parking lot into a beautiful garden by planting a sustainable vegetable and herb garden and painting an incredible wall mural.
ANNUAL BEACH CLEAN UPOn September 19th, more than 75 members and their families participated in Heal the Bay’s Coastal Clean-up Day. Volunteers picked up more than 360 pounds of trash and debris in Hermosa Beach!
FOR THE LOVE OF BOOKSOn Sunday, February 26, the Community Outreach committee partnered with {pages} a bookstore to host our annual For The Love of Books event. 20 children from Rainbow Services and Harbor Interfaith were invited to enjoy a special morning of books, snacks, crafts and story reading!
HOLIDAY BASKETSOn Saturday, December 10th, Sandpipers continued this 85-year tradition by distributing basic necessities and gifts to more than 100 families from 17 different agencies in need in the South Bay. The annual program has been a community
favorite since its humble beginnings in 1931. Each basket has an average value of over $900 and contains basic household goods, grocery scrip, shoe certificates, toys, and gifts.
SPRING SUPPLY BASKET PROGRAMThis year Sandpipers supplied Spring baskets to 15 supported agencies. In March, each of the agencies had the opportunity to ‘shop’ for one of six requested items including: school supplies, paper products, hygiene products, feminine products, emergency/earthquake kits and diapers/wipes.
SUMMER ARTSEvery July-August, Sandpipers funds, organizes and teaches a nine-week arts program made available to underserved adults and children living in the South Bay. The program enriches and enhances the lives of the underserved in our community and provides meaningful community service opportunities for our membership. This year, we supported the Richstone Family Center and Little Sisters of the Poor.
SUGARPLUM Through corporate and individual contributions the Sugarplum Committee surpassed their goal and collected over 1,500 holiday gifts for children living in foster care through the Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS).
