Women o Kireka (WoK) is a women's cooperative jewelry business based in Kampala, Uganda.By providing business skills training, added capital and a resilient peer group, WoK is helping its14 members gain economic independence.
History
Siena Anstis was introduced to WoK in 2008 by Beatrice Achiro Okeny o NUWECHI, anon-governmental organization based in Northern Uganda. Originally, Miss Anstis helped thewomen raise unding to start a chicken rearing / tailoring cooperative through social mediainitiatives. However, with the support and guidance o Project Diaspora (PD), the ocus o theproject switched rom charity to a or-prot business. Since mid-2008, in an efort to help WoKachieve its goal o becoming a successul business, PD has contributed expertise and trainingin international business, quality control, jewelry-making techniques, business skills training,organizational management and strategic planning, among other activities.

Why work with Women of Kireka?We are not a charity or traditional NGO. While Project Diaspora does contribute its timeto assisting WoK, collectively we are all working towards lasting solutions to poverty anddevelopment through a or-prot business approach. Our principles are creating a growingnetwork o opportunities or the women involved in Women o Kireka in Uganda as well as
their children and the community around them.
Our JewelryHANDMADE:Each WoK paper bead is individually made by-hand and completely unique bringing an originalpiece o jewelry to each customer. Variations in the colors and widths o beads adds to thecharm and beauty o our products.
EXCELLENT QUALITY:WoK pieces go through a rigorous quality-control process. Each piece is varnished with high-quality lacquer to protect rom wear and tear. Each individual piece o jewelry is inspectedbeore shipment. Pieces deemed substandard are returned to WoK and re-made beore beingshipped.
Marketing for youFor each order over 50 pieces, WoK includes a complimentary set o tags. Each tag includes apicture o a member o Women o Kireka and their unique story. We recommend tying these tagsaround sets o WoK jewelry and packaging the products in WoKs unique bags. Your customerwill not only appreciate the joy o gaining a beautiul, unique piece o jewelry, but will also learnmore about each woman's story and ambitions.
Order TimelineEach order takes about 6-8 weeks to process. We do not hold stock or bulk orders so each piece

AKECH SANTA
Santa is a born leader. She is a key member
of Women of Kireka and encourages the
women to work together. In 1994, she
ed to Kampala from Northern Uganda.
As she suffers crippling back pains, she
hopes to stop working on the quarry
and continue assisting the expansion ofWomen of Kireka.
ABONYO SARAH
Fleeing the Lords Resistance Army in
Northern Uganda, Sarah and her family
came to Kampala. She works with her
husband on the Kireka quarry. She hopes
Women of Kireka will eventually help
her open her own tailoring business
where the work will be less strenuous
and more fullling than on the Kireka
quarry.
LAYET SABINA
Sabina is one of the oldest members in
Women of Kireka. She has ve children,
but only two of them are currently liv-
ing with her. She relies on them to get
around as she is conned to a wheel-
chair. Sabina is already a skilled tailor and
would like to open her own tailoring
store one day.

LAMUNO GRACE
Grace used to work as a farmer in
Northern Uganda, but ed during the
war to Kampala . After her husbands
abduction by the Lords Resistance Army,
she started working on the quarry. Bad
health stopped her from continuing
other business ventures such as selling
sugarcane. Although she is an incredibly
active member of WoK she nds it hardto be optimistic and worries her life
might stay like this forever.
ANYEK HELLEN
Hellen has two children in high school
and works hard to pay their school fees.
She is not sure what her passion is, but
she knows that she wants to operate a
small business one day. She hopes that
working with the Women of Kireka will
help her develop the skills and capital to
do so. She ed Northern Uganda after
her husband was abducted by the LordsResistance Army.
ACHAN GLORIA
When Gloria is not working at the quarry,
she sells sugarcane in her community to
support her ve children. Demonstrating
determination and ingenuity, she is
excited to leave the quarry behind and
open a small restaurant or start working
in tailoring. She says she is alwayshappy when she sees Women of Kireka
together and is so grateful to have all
these wonderful people in her life.
ACHEN JASINTA
Jasinta moved to the quarry in 1998
to provide for her 10 children and her
husband, who is mentally impaired. She
desperately needs another source of
income to make ends meet and hopes
Women of Kireka will help her develop
new business skills.

ABEE MARGRET
Margret moved to the quarry in 2000
and nds the work very difcult. She
would love to return to her village one
day and believes she could do this with
some training in tailoring. She would
also like to help her village members
learn new skills in tailoring.
AJOK ALICE
Alice joined the Women of Kireka in
2010. She hopes that the Women of
Kireka will inspire her to do something
she loves and assist her in leaving the
quarry permanently. While she is one
of the few women with a husband who
survived the war, she struggles alone toprovide for her children as he suffers
from post-conict stress disorder.
AUMA MILLY
Milly has three children and recently
gave birth to a fourth child, named after
Project Diasporas Teddy! Milly loves the
idea of investing in something like coal
or selling food items and hopes that
through Women of Kireka she will earn
enough capital to do so.
AYAT JENNIFER
Jennifer, a single mother of ve children,
speaks uent English and works tire-
lessly as Women of Kirekas translator.
She works long hours on the quarry and
also sells small items like sugarcane and
bananas. Compared to her other busi-
ness ventures, she believes she is best at
crushing rocks. However, she would like
to start a tailoring business. She alreadyknows how to sew quite well and makes
beautiful sweaters and pullovers.
ABO GETRUDE
Getrude, mother of two, has been living in
Kampala since 1978 and has many different
side businesses aside from working at the
quarry. At night she sells french fries at a local
eatery and, on weekends, she sells second
hand clothing. Getrude strongly believes that
now is the right time for her to leave the
quarry forever. She dreams of keeping poultry
or of operating a daycare one day as children
bring her the greatest joy.
ALOOBO BEATRICE
Beatrice is Women of Kirekas youngest
member. She spends most of her savings
from the quarry on her children, but is
diligent about saving money to invest in
her charcoal business. Through Women
of Kireka, she hopes to invest more in
her business or transition into tailoring.Beatrice is most grateful to be a mother
and would do anything for her children.
ACHIRO ELDER
Elder ed to Kampala from Northern
Uganda in 2000. She works with her
husband on the stone quarry to support
her three children. She hopes to nd
a new livelihood soon as she nds the
work at the quarry physically demanding.
She would love to be trained in tailoring,
something she believes she could excel
in, and dreams of opening a bakery.
