Santa is a born leader. She is a key member

of Women of Kireka and encourages the

women to work together. In 1994, she

ed to Kampala from Northern Uganda.

As she suffers crippling back pains, she

hopes to stop working on the quarry

and continue assisting the expansion ofWomen of Kireka.

    ABONYO SARAH

Fleeing the Lords Resistance Army in

Northern Uganda, Sarah and her family

came to Kampala. She works with her

husband on the Kireka quarry. She hopes

Women of Kireka will eventually help

her open her own tailoring business

where the work will be less strenuous

and more fullling than on the Kireka

    quarry.

    LAYET SABINA

Sabina is one of the oldest members in

Women of Kireka. She has ve children,

but only two of them are currently liv-

ing with her. She relies on them to get

around as she is conned to a wheel-

chair. Sabina is already a skilled tailor and

would like to open her own tailoring

    store one day.

    the

    LAMUNO GRACE

Grace used to work as a farmer in

Northern Uganda, but ed during the

war to Kampala . After her husbands

abduction by the Lords Resistance Army,

she started working on the quarry. Bad

    health stopped her from continuing

other business ventures such as selling

sugarcane. Although she is an incredibly

active member of WoK she nds it hardto be optimistic and worries her life

    might stay like this forever.

    ANYEK HELLEN

Hellen has two children in high school

and works hard to pay their school fees.

She is not sure what her passion is, but

she knows that she wants to operate a

small business one day. She hopes that

working with the Women of Kireka will

help her develop the skills and capital to

do so. She ed Northern Uganda after

her husband was abducted by the LordsResistance Army.

    ACHAN GLORIA

she sells sugarcane in her community to

    support her ve children. Demonstrating

    determination and ingenuity, she is

excited to leave the quarry behind and

open a small restaurant or start working

in tailoring. She says she is alwayshappy when she sees Women of Kireka

together and is so grateful to have all

these wonderful people in her life.

    ACHEN JASINTA

Jasinta moved to the quarry in 1998

to provide for her 10 children and her

husband, who is mentally impaired. She

    ABEE MARGRET

Margret moved to the quarry in 2000

and nds the work very difcult. She

would love to return to her village one

day and believes she could do this with

some training in tailoring. She would

also like to help her village members

    learn new skills in tailoring.

    AJOK ALICE

Alice joined the Women of Kireka in

2010. She hopes that the Women of

Kireka will inspire her to do something

she loves and assist her in leaving the

quarry permanently. While she is one

of the few women with a husband who

survived the war, she struggles alone toprovide for her children as he suffers

    from post-conict stress disorder.

    AUMA MILLY

Milly has three children and recently

gave birth to a fourth child, named after

Project Diasporas Teddy! Milly loves the

idea of investing in something like coal

or selling food items and hopes that

through Women of Kireka she will earn

    enough capital to do so.

    AYAT JENNIFER

Jennifer, a single mother of ve children,

speaks uent English and works tire-

lessly as Women of Kirekas translator.

She works long hours on the quarry and

also sells small items like sugarcane and

bananas. Compared to her other busi-

ness ventures, she believes she is best at

crushing rocks. However, she would like

to start a tailoring business. She alreadyknows how to sew quite well and makes

    beautiful sweaters and pullovers.

    ABO GETRUDE

Getrude, mother of two, has been living in

Kampala since 1978 and has many different

side businesses aside from working at the

quarry. At night she sells french fries at a local

eatery and, on weekends, she sells second

hand clothing. Getrude strongly believes that

now is the right time for her to leave the

quarry forever. She dreams of keeping poultry

or of operating a daycare one day as children

    bring her the greatest joy.

    ALOOBO BEATRICE

Beatrice is Women of Kirekas youngest

member. She spends most of her savings

from the quarry on her children, but is

diligent about saving money to invest in

    her charcoal business. Through Women

of Kireka, she hopes to invest more in

her business or transition into tailoring.Beatrice is most grateful to be a mother

and would do anything for her children.

    ACHIRO ELDER

Elder ed to Kampala from Northern

Uganda in 2000. She works with her

husband on the stone quarry to support

her three children. She hopes to nd

a new livelihood soon as she nds the

work at the quarry physically demanding.

She would love to be trained in tailoring,

something she believes she could excel

in, and dreams of opening a bakery.
