A Statement By Cardinal Dinardo
Archbishop of Houston President of the US Catholic Bishops
After outlining a specific course of action to be taken up at the annual meeting of all Catholic bishops in November, the Cardinal offered this statement:
I wish to apologize and humbly ask your forgiveness for what my brother bishops and I have done and failed to do. Whatever the details may turn out to be regarding Archbishop McCarrick or the many abuses in Pennsylvania (or anywhere else), we already know that one root cause is the failure of episcopal leadership. The result was that scores of beloved children of God were abandoned to face an abuse of power alone. This is a moral catastrophe. It is also part of this catastrophe that so many faithful priests who are pursuing holiness and serving with integrity are tainted by this failure.
We firmly resolve, with the help of God's grace, never to repeat it. I have no illusions about the degree to which trust in the bishops has been damaged by these past sins and failures. It will take work to rebuild that trust. What I have outlined here is only the beginning; other steps will follow. I will keep you informed of our progress toward these goals. Let me ask you to hold us to all of these resolutions. Let me also ask you to pray for us, that we will take this time to reflect, repent, and recommit ourselves to holiness of life and to conform our lives even more to Christ, the Good Shepherd.
There can be no defense made of the criminal and gravely sinful acts of abuse towards more than a thousand minor children and youth by some 300 Pennsylvania priests over a period of 70 years. Nor can bishops be defended for having made so many efforts to hide these actions from public view, nor for moving these priests around from place to place long after they should have been dismissed from the priesthood. But it should be noted that since 2002 when the Bishops’ Conference adopted long overdue new policies at a meeting in Dallas, the number of cases of abuse and coverup has declined dramatically. Programs and procedures that have been adopted in parishes everywhere have brought about safe environments for our youth..
Once again, part of the followup of these embarrassing revelations is that all priests and bishops will be looked upon with suspicion by many people including good Catholics struggling to hold on to their faith. So let me state for the record: While I am not without sin, I have never engaged in inappropriate actions of any kind with minors. Nor do I personally have knowledge of any priest in active ministry who may have done so. Let us pray for all children who have been or are victims of abuse of any kind.

Weekly Sessions resume August 19th
Sundays from 10:20—11:30am
Raising children can be a challenging endeavor. We are excited about the opportunity to help you raise them as disciples of our Lord Jesus Christ. Our catechetical programs have as their chief objective to accompany the children on a journey of faith that makes it possible for them to become, over time, his faithful disciples. We believe that families that worship together every Sunday (barring illness or travel) and see to it that children participate regularly in discipleship formation classes will experience rewarding benefits. Families that pray, worship, and learn together stay together. We highly encourage all parents to participate in the Alpha course which we offer twice a year. For those who have already experienced Alpha, we encourage participation in one of our Small Discipleship Groups. Some of those groups may be held between the Masses on Sunday mornings.

PREPARING FOR BAPTISM CLASS
THIS SUNDAY AUGUST 19th
1pm in Room 4
We conduct this one session program for members of our parish who are planning to baptize a child for the very first time. First time godparents are also welcome, but participation is optional. There are other expectations of parents who are going to promise to raise their child in the faith of the Church. Following this class, parents must contact Father Jack at least 30 days before the date you are requesting to see if there may be any special circumstances in scheduling the actual baptism.
PARISH NURSE POSITION
Parish Nurses, aka Faith Community Nurses, are a relatively recent addition to the nursing profession, but are found today in countless churches across the country. They are Registered Nurses who have the capacity to practice a spiritual form of tender loving care. At St. Andrew’s this is a part-time position in which the parish nurse can arrange his or her own hours. If you are interested, please contact Fr. Jack by phone or email.
