Things to consider:
• What’s the right type of racking for your needs? Consider your soil class, concrete floor specifications, seismic zone, the structural integrity of your chosen racking, and loading weights on beams/frames.
• Don’t forget to check out the above before you sign a lease or purchase a property – the state of the building will have significant implications for your racking.
• Greater profile components are required if your warehouse is in a challenging seismic zone. This may extend to seismic bracing.
• Fire Safety Reports and Emergency Lighting Reports also need to be completed as part of your warehouse building consent application.
• Most importantly, get some expert advice: it will save you time and money in the long run, and keep you on the right side of the law (and your insurer).
The bottom line
To avoid expensive mistakes, it pays to talk to a pallet racking specialist who can walk you through the consent application, and help you with your documentation, so you can be sure your installation will be Building Code compliant.
Pallet Racking Solutions’ comprehensive consenting process walks you through the stages. We will provide an evaluation by our racking design engineer, a sign-off of installations and coordinate Fire & Emergency Lighting Reports for submission to your local council authority.
CONSENTINGANDCOMPLIANCE
Pallet racking installations in New Zealand now require a building consent. We can complete your consent, including the documentation needed to ensure the installation will comply with the New Zealand Building Code.

ITSPallet racking frames and beams can suffer
impact damage from forklifts. Living on our shaky isles means earthquakes are relatively common. To ensure the ongoing safety of your staff and your stock, we highly recommend a programme of maintenance and safety audits.
Perhaps you need to change beam levels to accommodate a change in inventory or there has been an increase in the weight of the products you are storing. Our audit includes an annual physical inspection, which may result in a recommendation for maintenance. We’ll check for any damage, supply any new components needed and quickly manage the installation to minimise your downtime.
This service provides invaluable peace of mind in areas of high seismic activity or following an impact from your material handling equipment.
When should you get a safety audit?
In terms of safety inspections to meet New Zealand’s Health & Safety legislation, there are no requirements for existing racking. However, if there’s an incident involving your existing racking, you’ll need to consider its occupational safety and insurance implications.
If there’s been a recent, significant earthquake in your region, first, make sure your team is safe. Then, if you can do it safely, make sure there are no unstable stock items at height. We also recommend a professional safety audit, to ensure your racking is still structurally sound following seismic activity.
What to expect during a safety audit?
Our team will do a visual inspection to identify any points of damage. They’ll check for correct loadings, and make sure your safety signs are in place and visible. You’ll then get a detailed written report highlighting any areas of damage and an estimate for any repairs needed.
This is a good time to look at proactive ways to optimise the safety and efficiency of your storage systems.
Is there any downtime?
Our crew will work around your operations to eliminate downtime. We also offer de-installation, relocation and storage options if you’re looking at moving premises temporarily or permanently.

N You’ve made the decision to move, but how do you reconfigure the entire contents of your warehouse without massive delays or loss of productivity? We take care of everything
Pallet Racking Solutions end-to-end de-installation and warehouse relocation service will make moving your pallet racking and storage handling equipment as painless as possible. We’ll dismantle your current system, transport your racking nationwide, then set it up again in your new warehouse.
What’s involved in a warehouse move?
• Step 1: Visit current location We determine the size and the scope of the project and understand your warehouse work flow and what you want to achieve by the move.
• Step 2: Visit new premises We establish how to best maximise the usable storage space and create time efficiencies. Part of the process is to ensure the soil class, concrete floor specifications and seismic zone of the new warehouse are all taken into account in the new design. As well as the loading weights on beams and frames and the integrity of your existing racking.
• Step 3: Pallet racking plan All of the above factors are worked through by our designers and engineers and translated into a new pallet racking plan for your team’s approval.
• Step 4: Consenting process We start the consenting process with a PS1 Producer Statement. To understand more about what’s involved see our comprehensive consenting process.
• Step 5: De-installation We organise the move and start the de-installation of the racking. This can be done in stages to ensure that your warehouse is functional throughout the process.
• Step 6: Transport Once the first of the racking is down it can be moved directly to the new premises. PRS can project manage the transport to ensure everyone is working to the same time frames.
• Step 7: Installation Our crew will be on hand to receive the racking and start the re-installation in accordance with the approved plans. This process can be repeated several times (including after hours and weekend work if necessary) until all the racking is moved into its new home.
• Step 8: Restoration With all the racking gone we can then remove the screw anchors and restore your old warehouse floor to its original condition if necessary. With everything in its place the council consenting process is completed.

Relocating or expanding within your existing facility
If you’re looking to relocate within your existing facility there’s a number of ways you can increase your pallet storage capacity, these include:
• Considering a narrow aisle option. Standard counterbalance material handling equipment often needs 3.5m, or greater aisle widths. However, Narrow Aisle Material Handling equipment can reduce this to 1.8m or less, effectively doubling your pallet storage capacity in the same location!
• Increasing the height of your existing racking with structurally sound splicing that can be consented by council.
• Selecting a new racking installation including an increased number of frames and/or beams and higher frame options.
Find the solution that suits you
It doesn’t have to be PRS racking that’s being moved, our team is familiar with all the products on the market and can sort you out regardless.
PRS also buy and sell second-hand racking, so if you find there’s some racking that no longer suits your needs we can buy it off you. And of course, we can help provide you with any additional new or second-hand racking or shelving you might need for your new warehouse.
