ZUNO has embarked on mop-up

trainings on the World Health Organisation (WHO) Surgical Checklist for the theatre staff that were left out during the scheduled trainings ahead of the close of the project in March 2017.

The aim of the project is to strengthen nursing leadership influence in Operating theatres and improve the knowledge and skills of theatre teams in the use of the WHO Surgical Checklist as well as improve team work and communication among the theatre teams.

The Safer Surgery Saves Lives project which commenced in 2015 was piloted at University Teaching Hospitals, Kabwe General Hospital and Kabwe Mine Hospital theatres.

Two Hundred and Seventeen (217) members of staff working in Theatres have been trained since the start of

the pilot in 2015, out of which twenty four (26) were trained champions whose role is to lead theatre teams in ensuring patient safety.

ZUNO with support from the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) conducted mop-up trainings in Kabwe from the 14th to 16th February 2017 and at the University Teaching Hospitals from 21st to 23rd February 2017.

Those who were not captured in the initial trainings are expected to be captured during the mop-up

trainings. Thirty two (32) staff and fourteen (14) champions have since been trained during the mop-up exercise.

An evaluation of the project is being undertaken to determine the impact it has had against the set objectives.

The Safer Surgery Saves Lives project is being implemented by ZUNO with support of the RCN and funding from Tropical Health & Education Trust (THET).

ZUNO Nods Creation of New Nursing Positions

ZUNO President Mr. Liseli Sitali says the creation of new

positions for nursing specialties during the first phase of the restructuring process within the Ministry of Health is positive for the advancement of the nursing and midwifery profession.

The newly introduced specialties include HIV Nurse Practioner, Critical Care, Ophthalmic and Orthopedic nursing etc.

“What is exciting is that positions that never existed are being created and the Bachelor of Nursing Sciences degree holders are finally being considered to hold the newly created position of Clinical Nurse in the clinical area.” Mr. Sitali explained.

The restructuring process has been divided into two phases. The first phase includes reorganisation of Ministry of Health head office, the University Teaching Hospital into five (05 hospitals, Provincial Health Offices and the District Health Offices.

The second phase will cover Health facilities to include Central, General and District Hospitals, Health Centres and Health Posts.

Mr. Sitali further expressed hope that the second phase will be embarked on and completed within the first quarter of 2017.

ZUNO is currently working with the Ministry of Health (MOH) and Management Development Division (MDD) to review the MOH establishment.

CNMF will be holding its 4th Conference on Saturday 10 and

Sunday 11 March 2018 under the theme“LEADING THE WAY:

Nurses and midwives for a safe, healthy and peaceful world”,

at the Royal College of Physicians, Regent’s Park in London,

Our world today is far from being safe, healthy or peaceful. Many countries

are experiencing war or civil conflict; there are more refugees than ever before seeking a safe place to live for themselves and their families; bush fires, floods, earthquakes and tsunamis are a frequent occurrence; diseases such as Ebola and Zika threaten health and stability; climate change threatens entire populations.

Nurses and midwives are in a unique position to lead the way in promoting a safe, healthy and peaceful world through their work with individuals in health and education; with vulnerable groups; with young people; in disaster areas and in conflict zones; with refugees; by being an activist; and by influencing governments and their policies.

Your abstract should demonstrate, through your work, your projects, or your research, how you, as a nurse or midwife, are leading the way and contributing to a safe, healthy and peaceful world.
