Onyx the Black Flying FoxOnyx was initially admitted to the Australian Wildlife Hospital on 27 October - he had been found on the

ground in Caboolture and was rescued by a wildlife carer. Our vets found that he had swelling over thebridge of his nose and superficial grazes to his right nostril. He was also slightly dehydrated, but thiswas quickly overcome once he was given oral fluids.Onyx came back to the Hospital this week for a re-check and a fracture on phalange 1 (a finger-likebone) was found. Fortunately the fracture is only slightly displaced so there was no need to repair it.Onyx will stay with his experienced bat carer until he is ready to go to bat kindergarten - then, if allgoes well, he will be released into a colony. The Black Flying Fox is the largest species of flying-fox in Australia. Interestingly, they can beat theirwings up to 120 times per minute, can fly at 35-40 kilometres per hour and may travel over 50 kilome-tres from their camp to a feeding area. They often share their camps with other flying-fox species.Call the Australian Wildlife Hospital on 1300 369 652 for all wildlife emergencies.

My name is Sally Hecke and I visited the zoo today with my parents, husband and two small children. After the 11.00am Crocodileshow (and after eating lunch which was excellent by the way) my family and I were looking at some lizards by the Koala enclosurewhen Terri and another male staff member walked by. Just right next to us, she picked up some rubbish off the ground and put it inthe bin. My family and I were so starstruck we just stood there like stunned mullets and didnt say anything and I have been kickingmyself ever since that moment that we didnt say hi or get a photo with her or anything.

We thought her Croc show was fantastic and really funny

I wanted to tell her that my sons just LOVE Bindis Jungle Girl show on ABC as well as their favourite Wiggles DVD is

the one with Steve and herself and Bindi (when she was young) My son was even singing the crocodile hunger, SteveIrwin song in the car on the way to the zoo.

Even though it rained on and off today, we had a great day and we just love how the animals are so looked after andwell cared for.Thank you so much, and keep up the good work at the zoo, its an amazing place!
