A Message From Our Executive Director

Dear YWCA Westmoreland Members and Friends,

I am delighted to be penning my first “Letter from the Executive Director,” because to me, this job feels like a sort of homecoming.

With the exception of one year spent in Athens, Georgia to attend UGA, I have lived in Westmoreland County my entire life. (Some of you will know me by my maiden name Cindy Daugherty.) I have not, however, been working in Westmoreland County for many years. I have been commuting from Youngwood to downtown Pittsburgh, where I worked at the Bayer Center for Nonprofit Management at Robert Morris University. I love nonprofit leadership and capacity building – it’s been my career for over 20 years now, but I was never able to bring myself to move out of Westmoreland County. In fact, a colleague once said to me “why do you bear that long commute when you could live anywhere?” My reply was “you’ve got it backwards – I can work anywhere, my heart is in the Laurel Highlands.”

When a friend called to tell me about the executive director position opening up here at the YWCA, I jumped at the chance to bring my nonprofit management experience and skills back to my home county. And not just for any cause – but for social justice that is sorely needed in our country right now. Women and people of color have come a long way from our country’s colonial days, when these groups could not vote, hold property, or be elected to office. We have made progress since the Civil Rights Movement and Second Wave Feminism of the 1960s, but we are not finished! Today, a woman still makes 76 cents for every dollar a man makes. If that woman is black, she makes 61 cents for every dollar. And even though in 2015, male to female ratio for United States of America was 97.9 males per 100 females, we have yet to see a woman POTUS be elected. And a black friend of mine told me recently that she pulled up to a stoplight, only to have the person in the car next to her yell a racial slur through his open window. Like I said, we still have work to do – nationwide and at home.

I believe in my core that every problem has a solution, even if the solution takes time and is not yet apparent. Social justice issues are complex, a many layered onion to peel, and our mission of eliminating racism and empowering women will take a multi-faceted approach that requires dedication, patience, and time. Lack of gender parity, racism, and other injustices are systemic in many cases, so we must dig deep to change systems and structures as well as hearts and minds.

I also believe we are up to the task! In just my first week on the job, I have met so many people who care about the YWCA and its mission. I am touched by program participants telling me how the YWCA has helped them. Our staff, board, and volunteers are smart and fiercely dedicated. I couldn’t be prouder to join the ranks of these amazing people.

Cindy Leonard joined the YWCA Westmoreland County as Executive Director in September 2018, bringing over 20 years of nonprofit leadership and management experience. The YWCA endeavors for social justice by working to eliminate racism, empower women and promote peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.

Previously, Cindy spent 12 years at the Bayer Center for Nonprofit Management, working with the director and consulting team to enhance the Center's consulting and technology programs. She also performed community organizing around technology through the Center's popular Bagels & Bytes meetups and annual TechNow conference. Before that, she managed IT for Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful.

An experienced speaker and trainer with a highly engaging, interactive style, Cindy has successfully worked with groups as small as 10 and as large as 200 on a wide variety of topics. She has presented and trained at over 100 conferences and classes, including conferences by Pennsylvania Association of Nonprofit Organizations, Nonprofit Technology Network, Nonprofits LEAD, Alliance for Nonprofit Management, Association of Fundraising Professionals of Western Pennsylvania, and Pennsylvania Library Association.

Cindy presently serves on the board of the Alliance for Nonprofit Management. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, a Master of Business Administration, and a Master of Education, all from Seton Hill University.

Raised in Blairsville and Derry Township, Cindy has had a lifelong love affair with the Laurel Highlands, and currently resides in Youngwood with her husband Rob and a handful of very spoiled felines. She blogs about nonprofit management and technology at www.cindyleonard.org.

Annual Poster Contest

YWCA Westmoreland County is sponsoring a

POSTER CONTEST

“Make Our Differences Our Strengths”

Rules:

1. The contest is open to all students who are residents of Westmoreland County and enrolled in grades K-12. (home-schooled, public or private schools)

2. The theme is “Make Our Differences Our Strengths.”

3. Poster Size Minimum = 12”x 18”; Poster Size Maximum = 18” x 24”

4. Students may use any type of paper. 5. Do not roll posters. 6. Students may use any medium. (i.e., crayons, watercolors, markers, coloring pencils, etc.) 7. The following information should be clearly written in pencil or pen on the back of the poster in the

lower left hand corner: Student’s Name, Home Address, Telephone Number, School and Grade Level 8. Only one entry per student. 9. The poster submitted must be the student’s original work. 10. Judging criteria: Creativity, theme representation, and visual appeal 11. Deadline to submit an entry is October 19, 2018. 12. Posters should be submitted to the YWCA Westmoreland County at 424 North Main Street in Greens-

Each winner will receive $100 and a certificate.

Entries will be displayed and voted on at the Westmoreland Diversity Coalition’s Annual Unity Celebration held on October 24th at Ferrante’s Lakeview Restaurant. The celebration is free and open to the public. Par-ents and children are encouraged to attend. The voting will be open to celebration attendees from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Winners will be announced before 8 p.m.

Winning posters will be displayed through the end of the school year at the YWCA Westmoreland County.

The YWCA's International Women's Group welcomes women of all nationalities to Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. The International Women's Group provides a meeting place for women to meet each other and develop friendships, to share and learn about the United States (particularly the new area in which they are living), improve their English and become a part of their new community.

BOOK DONATIONS

Book Donations will be accepted again after October 1st for the 2019 Used Book Sale. We accept gently used hardbacks and paperbacks in all categories. We cannot use Reader’s Digest Condensed Books, maga-zines, VHS tapes, audio cassettes, or encyclopedias/text books that pre-date 2016. If you’d like to donate a large quantity of books, please call the office so we can make arrangements to meet you at the warehouse. Thank you!!

TUTORS NEEDED

We have classes for our English As a Second Language students, but there are some students who cannot attend these classes because of their work schedules. These students are in need of tutors and conversation partners.

For anyone desiring to become an ESL Tutor, there will be a mandatory Orientation on Tuesday, October 30, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Our Tutor Trainings are self-paced, on-line through ProLiteracy.

Field Hockey

YWCA Girls Field Hockey News

The YWCA Field Hockey Program is having a successful 2018 Outdoor Season with 31 participants from grades one through eight. The traveling team (players in grades 5-8) will play ten officiated games ending the last week of October. Please come to see our home games at Hempfield Park. You can find the game schedule on our website (www.ywcawestmoreland.org).

After the holidays, the program will go indoors starting Sunday, January 6th at Murrysville Sports Zone,

12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. for 1st through 7th graders & 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. for 8th through 12th graders. The Indoor Program is for girls in 1st grade through 12th grade who are interested in learning or improving their field hockey skills and want to have fun during the off-season. All players are welcome. Beginners to ad-vanced players are encouraged to sign up. The YWCA offers league play with some traveling in order to compete with teams within our area.

Indoor Field Hockey registration forms will be available on our website (www.ywcawestmoreland.org) by the end of October 2018. All 2018 Field Hockey players will be notified via email when the registration opens for the 2019 season. REGISTRATIONS NEED TO BE COMPLETED BEFORE THURSDAY, DECEMBER 20, 2018. In anticipation of a large enrollment, a fir st come, fir st-served policy will be in effect. PLEASE get your registrations in early to ensure a space.

Childcare

YWCA Preschool News: 3 and 4-Year-Olds

The YWCA 2018-2019 Preschool year has begun. We wel-comed both some new and some familiar faces this year into the 3 and 4-year-old preschool programs.

September’s lessons enhanced the opportunity for children to get to know each other, to learn about families, and to even find out more about themselves. We went camping, watched butterflies hatch, picked some apples, and began learning our ABC’s and 123’s as the foundation for future development. Beginning this month Miss Mary Ellen Tiberio will welcome the children to the TechTYKES lab on Wednesdays. TechTYKES is a technology-infused preschool incorporating elements of a traditional preschool environment with technol-ogy tools such as a SMART Table, tablets and laptops. The children will have a wide range of hands-on, interactive mate-rials to experiment and explore.

October’s lessons focus on the change in the seasons and diversity in the classroom, at home, and in the community. The children will be visited by our own Maintenance Director and Volunteer Firefighter, Matthew Kolbosky, who will discuss the importance of fire safety.

Kidz Zone is excited to announce we have moved to Living Hope Church in Whitney to accommodate children attending Baggaley Elementary School.

The YWCA Westmoreland County is committed to supporting parents in meeting their children’s needs. The Kidz Zone Program seeks to provide affordable before and after school care in a supervised, safe, secure, and nurturing environment. Kidz Zone is licensed by the PA Department of Health and Human Services to operate a Child Care Center serving children grades K-6.

The Program provides a variety of activities ranging from quiet time to exciting and stimulating indoor and outdoor fun and includes a nutritious afternoon snack.

TechGYRLS

Our YWCA TechGYRLS have been competing in the FIRST®

LEGO® League robotics competition for 19 years! We

are excited to have two teams this year participating in the com-petition. Mrs. Gail Burkett will be coaching our Yough Middle School team and Mrs. Sarah Doris will be coaching our Ligonier Valley Middle School team. The competition will be an all day event on January 12, 2019 in Altoona. This year’s theme is INTO ORBIT. The girls will program a working robot to complete 15 challenges on the competition board in addition to creating a pro-ject. They will be judged for their robot’s ability to complete the challenges and on the core values which include inspiration, teamwork, and gracious professionalism. Their project is judged for research, innovative solution, and presentation. Their robot is judged on robot design which includes mechanical design, pro-gramming, strategy, and innovation. The girls will work many hours a week after school preparing for this competition.

Our other three schools which include Jeannette McKee Elementary, Greensburg Salem and Monessen Middle Schools will be offering Robolab I and Robolab II sessions this semester. Robolab II gives the girls the opportunity to experience building more advanced robots to complete challenges on a previous competi-tion board.

This program increases the girls knowledge in STEM and also increases their confidence to pursue a career in any of the STEM fields. We have a team of great teachers that teach the girls the basics and then mentor them along the way to encourage them to troubleshoot their programming and building problems. Their ses-sions conclude with a “Robo Expo” to demonstrate their robots to family and friends. When Gina McGrath attends the expos these are some of the comments she hears from the girls:

It made me feel really happy and excited and it helped me understand robotics.

I had so much fun in Robolab I and I want to take Robolab II and go to competition.

It was great. It taught me how to work together better and problem solve.

It showed me how to think in different ways to complete the tasks.

We are so proud of our TechGYRLS and wish them the best this semester as they build and program their robots.

Its sweatshirts, hoodies, mugs, autumn decor and of course everything pumpkins at the YWCA Thrift Shop in Greensburg! Stop in for your fall decora-tions and Halloween costumes while they are well stocked.

Consignment is in full swing. The rules and regula-tions can be found at ywcathriftshop.org (on our website) and also please like our page on Facebook. Consignment is a great way to earn some money on your gently used clothing. Donations and consign-ment are accepted every day we are open. Our hours are 10 am till 4 pm, Monday through Saturday with extended hours on Thursday until 7 pm. If you have any questions, please call 724-834-4339.

Our Holiday Kick-off will be on November 5, 2018. The shop will be magically turned into a winter wonderland with gifts, decorations and clothing for the whole family to enjoy the season.

PA WORKWEAR

PA WORKWEAR, provided by the YWCA West-moreland County, sees clients on a referral basis from the County Assistance Office (CAO), Private Industry Council (PIC) as well as other county agencies. The women receive free professional clothing for job search, training and employment. The PAWW Consultant grooms each client by giv-ing her the clothes, accessories, and hygiene items she needs in order to be successfully employed.

As we organize and clean our closets, please assist and support PAWW with a donation*. We welcome and appreciate:

· Clean business clothes including maternity wear · Khakis, blue and black denim jeans, polo shirts,

and medical scrubs

· Flat, wedge or low heel, closed-toe professional shoes

· Unopened trial/hotel sizes of hygiene products

· Professional purses that are black or neutral · Clothing store gift cards

· Monetary donations

*Donations are tax-deductible.

Occasionally, a client does not own a winter coat. So, coats are also welcomed donations during this time of year. Designate your items for PAWW and drop them off at the YWCA Thrift Shop during their business hours. PAWW received clothing donations from Ginny Rach and Karen Phillips over the summer along with numerous anonymous donations. PAWW clients always enjoy the abil-ity to have outfits that make them feel confident at their interviews or on their new jobs. It obvious by the smiles on their faces!

The 2018 YWCA Westmoreland County “And All That Glitters” Fashion Show was held at Rizzo’s Malabar Inn in Crabtree on Monday, August 20th, 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Our emcee for the evening was Jennifer Miele. Approximately 290 people gathered for a fun and elegant evening to support the many programs and services of the YWCA Westmoreland County. The evening began with a welcome from YWCA Board President Norma Skil-lings. The evening concluded with remarks from Fashion Show Committee Chair Carlene Williams.

The “And All That Glitters” event featured fashions from our Thrift Shop starring the clients, customers and friends of the YWCA. Through the fashion show script, attendees learned how the YWCA sup-ports women and girls of our community in many ways through our child care, literacy, social justice, technology, Thrift Shop, and wellness programs. Among the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the YWCA Rising Star Award to recipient Erica Nuckles. Ms. Nuckles is the Director of History & Collections at Fort Ligonier

Congratulations to Erica Nuckles

2018 YWCA Rising Star Awardee!

Erica Nuckles is the Director of History & Collections at Fort Ligonier where she recently opened seven exhibits she created for the newly-

renovated museum. A graduate of Mt. Lebanon High School in the South Hills of Pittsburgh, she holds a B.A. in anthropology from the University of Wyoming, a M.A. in museum studies from the George Washington University, and a Ph.D. in his-tory from the University at Albany, SUNY. Dr. Nuckles is also an alumnus of the 2013 Yale Public History Institute and has previously worked at Crailo State Historic Site: The Museum of the Colo-nial Dutch in the Hudson River Valley in Rensse-laer, NY, the Carlyle House Historic Park in Alex-andria, VA, the DAR Museum in Washington, DC, Bushy Run Battlefield in Jeannette, PA, and served as an adjunct professor at the University at Albany. She and her husband, Drue Spallholz, own the East-wood Inn restaurant in Ligonier and are in the pro-cess of restoring and opening a café that was part of the Eastwood’s operations in the mid-20th century. They live above the restaurant with their three cats, Sadie, Horatio, and Clint Eastwood, and enjoy trav-eling the world whenever their busy schedules allow.
