“What a wonderfully generous gift to have had Meghan Basi [14] paint a canvas inspired by the journey of our domestic violence survivors. Meghan cap-tured the pain and hope our resi-dence feel as they work to heal and rebuild their lives. We are truly grateful to now have the painting hanging in the lobby”

Susan Staples Executive Director

A REMARKABLE PAST...

In the early 1890s, our YWCA was founded by women for women. Its mission then, like our mission today, was to improve the lives of women who were new to our country and our community - mostly immigrant women who came to work in Lawrence and Haverhill.

Today, YWCA Northeastern Massachusetts is a social change organization which exists for the same reasons on which it was founded: to assure that women have the tools, skills and opportunities needed to become and remain personally and economically self-sufficient.

...A HOPEFUL FUTURE

We have served more than 15,000 people this year from our seven site locations in Lawrence, Lynn, Haverhill and Salem, New Hampshire. Every day, we improve the lives of at-risk women, children, teens and families across the Merrimack Valley and North Shore through more than 26 programs and services - most offered at no or low cost. Improving lives means meeting needs both great and small, immediately and long-term. Meeting needs is an important step on the path to helping empower vulnerable women to live healthier, more productive, self-sufficient lives.

The populations we serve have all overcome challenges as they work to heal and move forward with their lives. We assist women and families in crisis; offer shelter, counseling, and advocacy to survivors of domestic or sexual violence; provide safe, affordable housing to single women and families; link medically underserved women to vital health care; and offer high quality year-round childcare so that women can work to make their families self-sufficient. In collaboration with other organizations, we work to improve the quality of life for residents in the communities we serve.

WE’RE ON A MISSION

LOOKING AHEAD TO TOMORROW

With the reopening of The Residence in our Haverhill location, we have seen at-risk, homeless women come to our facility eager to have a brand new roof over their heads as they look ahead toward a better future. Our staff collaborate to bring services and opportunities to these new residents and we will continue this approach in the coming year. As always, our offerings include economic empowerment education and opportunties so that residents can become and maintain financial independence.

As we look ahead to next year, our impact in the com-munity will continue as we expand programs at our seven site locations, including expanded offerings in our Women’s Health Services. In fact, we are excited about returning to offer Healing Circles for women in cancer treatment and to offer Survivor Celebration events to women finished with cancer treatment. Our commitment to Greater Lawrence, Greater Haver-hill, Greater Lynn and all of the Merrimack Valley and North Shore continues as we assist women and fami-lies in bringing peace, justice, freedom and dignity to all.

“It was so rewarding to help in an Early Learn-ing classroom. I really bonded with Donna [a child with special needs], and itwas great help-ing her with reading, and just doing things kids like to do. I enjoyed my experience and the program is amazing!”Steven, age 17, Volunteer from Brooks School
