Our Penryn Campus 1

As Cornwall’s only Russell Group university we offer a unique blend of world-class teaching, interdisciplinary research, and an intimate campus feel. Our close knit community is home to around 6,000 students from countries across the globe, as well as some of the world’s leading academics.

Students choose to study at our Penryn Campus not just for the quality and strength of our research-led teaching, but also for the lifestyle. Set in 100 acres of the UK’s most scenic countryside and close to the waterside town of Falmouth, our students enjoy and learn from a ‘living classroom’ in Cornwall’s beautiful environment.

Our Penryn Campus is, uniquely, shared and managed jointly with Falmouth University. Whilst we have separate teaching and research facilities, our students share accommodation and social spaces which creates a vibrant mix of students from science, engineering, humanities and arts backgrounds.

Our students enjoy being part of this diverse community and the opportunities it provides to collaborate across disciplines.

The campus plays host to regular social and music events at the Stannary Bar, as well as performances from global artists at Falmouth University’s Academy of Music and Theatre Arts (AMATA).

Together with our campus partners we are helping to transform the local economy and to make Cornwall more competitive. We have created many high-skilled jobs – one of the main reasons our local community enjoys the lowest unemployment rates and highest average wages in the Duchy.

We are proud of all that we have achieved here and hope that you enjoy experiencing our diverse and friendly campus for yourself.

OUR INSPIRINGRESEARCH Research on our Penryn Campus addresses a range of global issues; from renewable energy, conservation and climate change to health, culture and government.

The latest Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014) recognised 98 percent of our research as being of international quality. Our researchers collaborate with local businesses, as well as leading international institutions, to address global and local issues in science, health and society. They have received awards from prestigious institutions such as the Zoological Society of London, The British Ecological Society and the Royal Society and attention from local, national and international media.

We have an international reputation as Cornwall’s pre-eminent research institute, and our academics bring more than £16 million of research income into Cornwall every year. This represents a quarter of all research funding

coming into the University as a whole. Our ambition and energy is underpinned by a modern and advanced research infrastructure, unparalleled in Cornwall. We are home to the £30 million interdisciplinary Environment and Sustainability Institute, where more than 100 academics and postgraduates from all over the world lead cutting-edge research into the challenges of environmental change. The campus is constantly developing, most recently with the new £12 million Stella Turk building adjacent to our Science and Engineering Research Support Facility (SERSF). Nearby, Truro houses our European Centre for Environment and Human Health and part of our College of Medicine and Health, in the grounds of the Royal Cornwall Hospital.

OUR SUBJECT AREAS

SERSF, Penryn Campus

My research looks at how insects and plants interact within the environment, and their role in the provision of ecosystem services. My work includes the study of pollination and pest regulation in crops. I am particularly interested in conserving and promoting bee populations, and protecting and promoting wild flower and crop pollination. To achieve this, I work closely with beekeepers and conservation organisations. Cornwall is a great place to carry out research as the landscape provides a rich and diverse environment to explore important issues around how humans and wildlife co-exist and thrive.

Our World-Class Facilities 5 4 Our Teaching Excellence

OUR GLOBAL FIELD COURSESA distinct feature of studying at the Penryn Campus is the opportunity to travel as part of your degree. Field courses allow you to apply the knowledge gained from our world-leading academics in the classroom to the real-world issues around us.

From the Isles of Scilly to Italy, Scotland to Namibia, London to the Galapagos Islands. We pride ourselves on delivering in excess of 50 residential field courses a year, across all years of study, and across most degree programmes.

The Exchange, Penryn CampusIsles Of Scilly

We are proud to continue a tradition of educational excellence that began in Cornwall 130 years ago with the founding of our Camborne School of Mines (CSM).

Studying with us, you will benefit from access to the latest thinking, equipment and resources. Our student to staff ratio is one of the best in the country, offering you the chance to become part of a thriving community of learners, where you'll build strong working relationships with academics across the University.

Our research strength not only benefits our postgraduate research students, who are supervised by experts in their fields, but also our taught postgraduate and undergraduate students. Often our lecturers are also our researchers – those writing the books and research papers which impact their subject areas.

Our learning facilities are world-class with lecture and seminar rooms across five buildings, state-of-the-art laboratory spaces, a new £1.2 million Masters Suite, and a specialist Renewable Energy Engineering Facility. We also offer a wealth of collaborative learning and study spaces including the Collaboratory, a custom-built business engagement facility and the Exchange building – which encompasses lecture theatres, an extended and refurbished library, plus informal study spaces. Almost £12m is being spent on further teaching and social facilities on the campus, due to be completed in 2020.

OUR TEACHINGEXCELLENCE

OUR WORLD-CLASS FACILITIES As well as outstanding academic facilities, we offer a range of modern amenities on campus for the use of both our staff and students. Our nursery, Sports Centre and a prestigious Green Flag Award for our grounds help make this a great place to study, work and live.

Working with our campus service provider FX Plus, we offer a wide range of dedicated, on-campus support services for students. This includes IT, health and wellbeing, finance, accommodation, disability support, support for specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia, a Multi-faith Chaplaincy, counselling and a doctors’ surgery.

Everyone has different requirements for accommodation and we offer a range of options to suit all tastes – on campus and in the towns of Falmouth and Penryn. Each residence is a vibrant community with its own distinctive character, offering you a safe and secure place to socialise, study and relax.

Being a University of Exeter student means that you belong to a community. Although we are quite a large institution, there is a sense of unity amongst Exeter staff and students that my friends at other universities don’t seem to have experienced. I feel very privileged to be part of it.

Thanks to its scenic beaches and coves, and dramatic clifftop views, Cornwall is one of Britain’s favourite holiday destinations. The county also has a rich history of artistic and scientific innovation, making it a fascinating and stimulating place to study.

Our Penryn Campus is located at the former site of Glasney College, an influential 13th century institution. Partly because of the campus, the town of Penryn is now home to a growing community of artists, young professionals and students. You'll find quirky shops, cafés and restaurants here.

The vibrant town of Falmouth is under 10 minutes by train from Penryn’s railway station and has a wealth of bars, pubs and restaurants and a lively café culture. It’s become a hub of Cornwall’s creative scene, with businesses, studios, shops, galleries and great live music. It also hosts several festivals throughout the year that honour its maritime traditions, including the Falmouth Oyster and the Falmouth Sea Shanty Festivals. The nearby beaches, rivers and the world-famous marina also make it a haven for those who love sand, sailing and surf.

A short bus or train ride away is Truro, home to the University of Exeter’s College of Medicine and Health in Cornwall and the European Centre for Environment and Human Health. The city boasts stunning views of the impressive Truro Cathedral as well as many opportunities for shopping, dining and cultural outings.

Although most students find that there is plenty to do right on their doorsteps, some head further afield to see what else Cornwall has to offer – including fantastic surfing on the north coast, art galleries in St Ives, beautiful gardens including Trebah and the Eden Project and breathtaking views at the Lizard and Bodmin Moor. All of these and other destinations are easily explored by bus, train, car and bicycle, and some on foot via the South West Coast Path.

OUR STUDENTS’ UNION

Swanpool Beach, Falmouth

It’s very close-knit and we get a lot of one-to-one attention from the teaching staff and get to know our classmates really well. You bump into people you know all the time, and that makes for a very friendly atmosphere. The other thing I’ve been impressed by so far is the amount of support available to us. When I first arrived, I had a number of practical things I needed to sort out as an international student, like my bank account, and I got lots of help with that.
