THIS TIME last year Iwrote an article about damagelimitation and added tips overthe Christmas period to avoidthe rapid weight gain, as we alllove to enjoy fine dining andgreat festive food. Sadly I gotslated for it! Some kindly soulbegan a campaign, which wastargeted towards me. Whatwas said was hurtful and froma stranger who had opinionson me, my shape and told meto drop the evangelicalpreaching over Christmas –people just want to relax, andnot have diets rammed downtheir throats. So I thank that person as this

year I am going to advise REST!Repose (The art of resting orthe state of being at rest, freedom from worry; peace ofmind.A place of calm from astressful world. #stressless)

You see, I am worried, I reallycare about my town that I love;I am seeing too many stressedpeople. Seriously emotionallystressed people and it isfrightening when you know the

statistics. The reality is peopletend to gain weight duringDecember and take in moresalt, drink too much alcoholand ditch their exerciseroutines, which puts additionalstress on hearts. STRESSmakes you fat! Stress isconnected to heart disease.

So it’s not that I amevangelical, I feel responsiblefor sharing some knowledgethat can lead to health andavoid UN-health.2015 will be the Year of

Repose for me and The Core.My mission is to help peoplemanage stress and thrive. I amteaching strategies and coursesto reduce stress in lives.Thebody lacks the ability to

understand where stresscomes from, whetherfinancial, physical or mentalstress the body can manifestin disease (dis ease) or injury. My philosophy Reposeallows wellness, andmindfulness to Restore goodhealth. Repose is breathingwell, relaxing andcompartmentalising stressors.Turn off the noise, tune in toyour Repose.

6 Avoid giving instantattention – when notprepared it can beexhausting

7 Have a cwtch, cuddle,hug and breathe

8 Go for a quick walkto clear the mind

9 Schedule time forunexpectedinterruptions

10 Laugh

11 SAY NO!Avoid overcommitting it makes youstressed!

12 Maintain yourtraining habits

Meet Jason Lingof Ship to Shore, anaward winning tattoo artistwho has travelled the worldto some of the biggestconventions as a guest artistand has experienced manydifferent cultures and artforms. Originally fromPortsmouth, Jason moved toCornwall to be with his

girlfriend after spending many years travelling to and fromthe county every weekend. With the original intention ofworking for somebody else as a guest artist, theopportunity arose for Jason to take over the studio inChurch Street and the rest in history! The premises have been given a huge overhall and it nowpresents itself as a state of the art studio with a unique‘retro boutique’ feel. The aim of the studio is to provide afriendly and professional environment for their customers.Jason can put his hand to any tattoo requested, and lovesto take on the larger, bespoke work that comes into thestudio. They offer afree consultationservice and willwork closely withyou to ensure youget the tattoo youreally want, neverforgetting thatwhile you may onlyspend a short timewith them, yourdesign is for life, so they will ensure you always get theirbest advice in every aspect of the process. As well as thevery limited selection shown on this page, Jason has awhole portfolio of work available to view in the studio. When it comes to tattooing, you get what you pay for. Donot expect a good artist to come cheap, because if ‘cutprice’ is the way that you go, you could end up spending agreat deal more further down the line, when you have topay for a large cover-up or laser tattoo removal. Save yourmoney until you can afford what you really want! Don’tsettle for something just because you are impatient to getsome ink, the end result of your decision will be with youfor a long time. Most of the laser removal performed is forjust that reason, impulse tattoos! As from the beginning of

the NewYear, Ship toShore will be offeringlaser tattoo removalusing the very lateststate of the artequipment.Ship to Shore isbeautifully presentedand spotless! If atattoo artist can’t keep their housein order, what other cornersmight they be cutting? You couldpotentially be putting your own health and wellbeing at

risk.Ask yourself; if thiswas a dental surgery andnot a tattoo studio, would Ilet them touch my teeth?Potentially there are agreat deal of similaritiesbetween the two regardingthe possibility of crosscontamination ofinstruments andequipment, and the

transmitting of blood-borne pathogens. The regulations inthe tattooing industry are minimal at best, so it is verymuch up to the individual studio to police themselves pastthe very basic health and safety requirements. Because ofthis, the cleanliness of their studio very much reflects theirattitude towards their customer and their customer’swellbeing.

You can find Ship to Shore at 58 Church streetFalmouth, or on @shiptoshoretattoofalmouthor have a look at their websitewww.shiptoshoretattoo.co.uk

KENNEL COUGHThis is one of these canine

diseases (and be reassured itdoesn’t affect cats) which is justwhat it says it is: it’s a bug –actually sometimes two bugs –which produce a cough in dogs, frequently when they’ve been inkennels. It’s most often causedby a bacteria called “Bordetellabronchiseptica”, but there’s oftena virus involved as well, called“Parainfluenza-3”. Either bythemselves, or together, thesebugs invade the lining of a dog’slarynx (the voicebox) andwindpipe, causing inflammation,so that when air passes overthese sore areas it results in anirritating cough.

How is kennel coughtransmitted?Kennel cough is a highly

contagious disease. It goes fromone dog to another much thesame way as a human coldtransmits in humans – after all, coughing is a great way ofspreading bugs into the air! – orit can go via direct contact ofone dog with another, likesniffing noses and suchlike. So,it’s often spread in areas wheremany dogs are confined together, such as boarding kennels oranimal shelters.Other ‘at risk’situations are dog groomers anddog shows. One infected dog cansoon infect many others even ifit is not showing any symptomsof kennel cough at the time. That’s because the incubationperiod – which is the time thedog first gets the infection to thetime that signs start showing, istypically between 7 to 10 days.Unfortunately that means that

you can have an infected dog inkennels, at a show, in thegroomers, without anyoneknowing it, and so the bugsspread from one dog to another

with nobody any the wiser.

What are the symptoms ofKennel Cough?Kennel Cough starts off as a

very dry, hacking, coarse cough, with urging and gagging. It oftensounds like your dog has gotsomething caught in the back ofhis throat and he is trying tocough it up and many ownersmistakenly think that their doghas a bone caught in his throat. The coughing can be quiteviolent, so they may also coughup white frothy material almostlike a mild vomiting. All that said, they’re usually quite well (apartfrom the cough) with a normaltemperature and they’re verykeen for their daily routine –walks, running around and all therest of it – and they very rarelystop eating! Labradors neverstop eating, obviously, but evenother breeds less dedicated totheir guts don’t seem too badlyaffected. What’s always intrigued me is

that the cough starts incrediblysuddenly – middle of the night, halfway through the morning, whenever – and starts off as itmeans to go on. There’s nogradual build up to it like withother diseases, but it’s full onright from the start. The coughing can get worse

on exercise and often goes onand on, day and night, which canbecome very distressing not onlyfor your pet but also for you!

What’s to do?If the cough is mild and your

pet seemingly otherwise fine, then probably you don’t need todo anything immediately, but youcan just see how the cough goeson. Uncomplicated cases ofKennel Cough often resolvewithout any treatment within 7-14 days. But it helps to remove

their collar and use a harness ifyou can, so there’s no pressureon the throat if they pull on thelead. Soft food usually goes downwell, too. However, if the coughing is

getting worse or your pet isstruggling, then go and see yourvet. They will probably prescribean anti-inflammatory drug, as acough suppressant, and mayadvise a course of antibiotics ifthe signs are severe. If leftuntreated sometimes these casesdeteriorate intobronchopneumonia, and that’s nojoke. Honey is also quite a goodcough suppressant – particularlylast thing at night, and most dogslove it!

Should we vaccinate? There are two vaccines, one

for each of the two bugs. TheParainfluenza virus isincorporated into the boostervaccination, but the Bordetellaone is separate, and is givendown the nose. Now this isn’talways the easiest of jobs, particularly with dogs who areold hands at the game as theythink it’s the canine equivalent ofwaterboarding!

The reason for giving it downthe nose is that the vaccineproduces an immunity in lining ofthe dog’s nose, so it kicks thebug out before it’s got a chance

to start invading. So, if your dog is going into

kennels, or mixes regularly withother dogs – such a dog-walkinggroup, or goes to training /obedience / agility classes, or is aworking dog – then yes, vaccinate, vaccinate, vaccinate!Especially in winter, as just likehuman colds, these bugs survivemuch better in wet weather!

DRIED FRUITI mentioned this in my last

article as a cause of poisoning indogs – but it’s well worthwhilementioning again, because withChristmas approaching, andpeople busy making Christmascakes / puds, then not only dothese occasionally get snaffled bydogs, but often they steal theingredients even before youstart!

The chief problem is from ourpoint of view is that nobodyknows how or why dried fruitscauses toxic effects in dogs. Also, why one dog can eat an entirebag of raisins / bowl ofmincemeat quite happily (albeit, after a while, with someundesirable effects at the otherend), and another dog can do thesame thing and die….If in doubt ring your vet and

get advice. Every practice has a24/7 number –it’s there for areason.INTHEMEANTIME,ONBEHALF OFALL OF USATROSEMULLIONVETS,LETMEWISHYOUANDYOUR PETSAVERY HAPPY CHRISTMASANDA PEACEFUL NEWYEAR.

Dragon Age 3 - Taking the series back to its RPG beginnings, it’s a gamethat will give you hours of fun in the huge world created by Bioware. While itsstory leaves a lot to be desired, the games keeps you distracted from that witheverything else. 9/10Assassins Creed: Unity - Unity offers upgrades to the free running andamazing graphics. Small tweaks have been made to the combat but that’sabout it. It’s a fun game and very good in parts but still leaves a lot to bedesired. 8/10Assassins Creed: Rogue - There is really nothing new in Rogue. It’sessentially Black Flag without the pirates. Playing on the Templar side doesgive you something different but not really enough to stand out from theprevious game. 7/10Far Cry 4 - It’s very pleasing on the eye but story is very disappointing. However the gameplay is so good it’s keeps you from noticing that. The sidemissions tend to be more fun and more rewarding than the actual mainmissions. Fans of the series will love the game. 9/10Grand Theft Auto V - The best game of last year finally gets its next genupgrade. Everything has been tweaked here from the amazing graphics to anew first person mode. The only downside is that if you played and finishedthe game last year. There is very little new to do with this one. 10/10Pro Evolution Soccer 2015 - PES has been overshadowed in recent yearsby the more successful Fifa. But this year PES is back with a brand newrebuilt engine and it’s a massive success. If Fifa is Lionel Messi then PES isCristiano Ronaldo. 8/10

Don’t get caught out this winter, have your car’s vital winterchecks done atTregoniggie Industrial Estate, Falmouth. TR11 4SN

Winter Motoring CHECKLISTPrepare for theworst and hope for the bestTwo out of the last three winters have seen widespread snow and ice for weeks on end with temperatures regularly fallingbelow -10°C.You’re more likely to break down in a bad winter – Emergency breakdown services had its busiest day on Monday,

January 4, 2010, and then again, less than 12 months later, on Monday, December 20, 2010 when patrols handled morethan 28,000 breakdowns. There’s more risk of delays too but not necessarily in the way you’d expect. If vehicles ahead lose control – a jack-knifed

lorry for example – you won’t be able to get through no matter how well-equipped your car is with winter tyres or chains. You could face a wait of several hours until the blockage and other traffic ahead has been cleared. Here’s what you need to do this winter to reduce the risk of a breakdown and make sure that you are equipped to deal

with the conditions.

Xpress Garage can check your car for you...Antifreeze – check coolant level regularly and, if required, top-up with a mixture of the correct type of antifreeze. Your

garage should check concentration to ensure adequate cold temperature protection.Battery – the most common cause of winter breakdowns. A battery more than five years old may struggle in the cold -

get it checked and replaced if necessary to avoid the inconvenience of an unplanned failure. Xpress offers a comprehensivecomputerised battery check with print out.Fuel – keep at least a quarter of a tank in case of unexpected delay.Lights – check and clean all lights regularly to make sure you can see and be seen clearly. Carry spare bulbs.Tyres – should have at least 3mm of tread for winter motoring. Consider winter tyres for improved safety. Check

pressures at least every fortnight.Windscreen – reduce dazzle from the low sun by keeping the screen clean inside and out. Now is a good time to renew

worn wiper blades.Screen wash – use a 50% mix of a good quality screen wash to reduce the chance of freezing in frosty weather.Locks and door seals – stop doors freezing shut with a thin coat of polish or Vaseline on rubber door seals. A squirt of

water dispersant (wD-40) in locks will help stop them freezing.
