Adam Harvey to return to WA's biggest country music festival for its 35th year
The Boyup Brook Country Music Festival presented by LiveLighter will celebrate its 35th year between February 13 and 16 with a bumper line-up led by eight-time Golden Guitar winner Adam Harvey.
With a career spanning more than 20 years, half a million album sales, gold and platinum albums, Harvey is one of Australia's most popular and enduring recording artists.
“I am really looking forward to coming back to the Boyup Brook Country Music Festival,” Harvey said.
“I'm going to spend the whole weekend there soaking up the atmosphere and catching up with lots of friends and fellow country music listeners.
“The festival has grown so much over the years and it's a great opportunity to showcase a few new songs, and plenty of old tunes too.”
Joining Harvey at the popular music and camping festival will be a long-list of country music favourites, with Graeme Connors, Amber Lawrence and Jetty Road among the stars that will light up the main stage.
Also set to delight audiences are Carter and Carter, Taste of Tamworth, Pixie Jenkins, The Crosby Sisters, Honky Tonk Heroes, Kate Kindle Band, Man in Black, Anthony Taylor, Jed Zarb, Moira J Scott, Sarah Broome and The Western Suntones. Continued page 15

Pam Hamence Awarded an OAMOn Australia Day Pam was awarded the Order of Australia
Medal (OAM) for her service with Volunteer Bush Fire Brigades, her service was credited as being well above and beyond normal service.
Pam first joined Kelmscott Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade in early 1970’s. Before that time Woman were not wanted or allowed to join; Volunteers were required to be ‘able bodied men’; for those who remember that time, the State Governments and the Shire’s changed the requirements to ‘able body person’.
“Even though the requirements had been changed, on the first meeting day after the changes some men at the Kelmscott Brigade blockaded the doors to prevent the women from entering and joining, five of us Ladies barged our way past those blockheads and joined the meeting to become members.” Pam proudly stated.
Pam was one of the first Ladies to join the volunteer Fire Brigade in Western Australia.
“All of the equipment, vehicles and clothing in those days had to be fundraised for, one of our main events was a Volunteer Fire Brigade Ball.”
Pam along with her husband Brian purchased property in Bridgetown in 1988 and joined the Hester Brigade, and then joined the Bridgetown Bush Fire Brigade which was reformed in 2007 when the ‘Bridgetown Fire and Rescue was separated into two bodies.
“Most of the work I undertook with the brigades was as the Treasurer or Secretary, along with manning the Radio, Well, I did have children to bring up as well.”
“When there was an incident there was always a lot more work to do, the ladies had to buy food and prepare meals, mostly in their own kitchens, along with trying to organize fire procedures in a time of relative chaos.” Pam went on to explain. Continued page 15

Riders Rev Up for the Blackwood Tour 2020
The fourth annual Rotary Tour of the Blackwood will be held again on Saturday, 21st March 2020 with three courses running through the picturesque hills of Bridgetown, Greenbushes, Balingup and Nannup.
Described as one of the toughest rides in WA, the Full Tour is an extremely challenging 134km road ride with several Category 4 climbs which attracts many experienced riders. Former Olympian, multiple gold medalist and current World Record holder, Steele Bishop OAM, will be taking the challenge for the first time this year as the Rotary Club of Bridgetown’s Tour Ambassador. Nicknamed “The Flying Fireman” after his 31 years in the WA Fire Brigade, Steele competed in the Blackwood Marathon in 2019. “I’m definitely looking forward to being back in Bridgetown to see how I fare against those hills!”, he said. “It’s going to be a tough ride for an important cause in a great part of the world.” Continued Page 14

Bridgetown Repertory Club next productions is ‘Calendar Girls’
Calendar Girls Play is based on the true story of eleven Women’s Institute (WI) members who posed nude for a calendar to raise money for the Leukaemia Research Fund
It begins when Annie’s husband John dies of leukaemia and she and her best friend Chris resolve to raise money for a new sofa in the local hospital waiting room
They manage to persuade four fellow Women’s Institute members to pose nude with them for an ‘alternative’ calendar with a little help from shy hospital porter and amateur photographer Lawrence.
The news of the women’s charitable venture spreads like wildfire, and soon hordes of Press descend on the small Yorkshire village, the calendar quickly becomes a huge success; But Chris and Annie’s friendship is put to the test under the strain of their new-found fame. Continued page 14

What Lives in my Backyard?Following our successful ‘What Lives in My Backyard?’
grant application to the Australian Government’s Communities Environment Program, the Bridgetown-Greenbushes Community Landcare Office has just bought 6 x wide angle motion sensor cameras, plus rechargeable batteries and SD cards for the cameras. These cameras will be available for community members to borrow for up to a month at a time to see what wildlife is living in or passing through their properties. Threats to our local wildlife such as cats and foxes will also be able to be monitored with these cameras.
A motion sensor camera set up by the river in the revegetation area at the Layman St Reserve for a week last year showed two cats, a fox, rabbits, and one brushtail possum. Another camera set up in a revegetation area at Maslin Reserve showed that it was very popular with a small mob of kangaroos who were very happy with the extra food resource that we had planted for them.
Many of the native fauna such as possums, phascogales, chuditch, microbats and quenda found in the Shire are not often seen as they are nocturnal and are resting while the sun is up, so the camera’s infra-red night vision captures any nocturnal visitors that may be visiting.
People who are interested in borrowing a motion sensor camera (refundable deposit required) can contact the Landcare Office on 0428 723 111 or email [email protected] and leave their details so that when a camera becomes available we can contact them.

Blackwood Creatives Update Blackwood Creatives has started the year very
busy with the launch of the broader community project “Christmas Yarns”. This project has so far seen involvement from over 100 locals all keen to take part in the creation of a 4 metre high Christmas Tree covered in hand knitted or crocheted granny squares. It’s planned to also have a number of similar smaller trees made to put in locations down Hampton St. This will give a very definite Bridgetown message to Christmas 2020. The BFCC is getting involved by running classes for those who want to learn to knit or crochet, Sew Gentle Era will be doing the same, residents of Geegeelup are being invited to take part, plus other community groups. The tree will be situated on the front lawn of the Repertory Theatre for the month of December and they will be involving their Christmas Panto characters in the “Turning on the Lights” event. Part of this event will also feature a “Spinning Yarns” segment. This will allow local writing groups and performers to get busy creating yarns to tell in the Spoken Word section of proceedings. Small yarns will then be printed out and attached to the smaller trees dotted down Hampton St for people to read as part of our Festive Season fun. There will be lots more to share about the event later in the year but for now if you’d like to get involved in knitting or crocheting please contact either Jenny on 0438 818 847 or Anne on 9761 1490.
We have also completed our Strategic Plan for the future and will be working towards Bridgetown becoming part of the Southern Art Trail, developing the Blackwood Region as a Creative Hub, developing an Open Studio Art Trail while building on the existing Art Trail and the launch of Sculptures By The Blackwood on the Easter weekend 2021. There is more in the pipeline too so watch this space. If you’d like to get involved with any of these projects or Blackwood Creatives Inc in general, feel free to contact Jenny Mountford on 0438 818 847.

Show TalkWelcome everyone to 2020 and congratulations to all
those who were recognised in the Australia Day Honours. The first meeting for this year will take place on
Wednesday 12th February, 7.30pm, in the Presidents Room at the Showgrounds. The Committee welcomes anyone interested in joining us. Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the Month from February to December or you could be a part of the volunteers who together contribute to the wellbeing of the grounds or working on the entertainment, helping to create a great atmosphere for the Annual Show.
The Showground is Memorial Land held in Trust by the Agricultural Society Committee. As the Registered Custodians, they are responsible for the ground and building maintenance and running of events held throughout the year. Hiring of the grounds can be done through the Committee or bookings for the buildings can be done at the Bridgetown Newsagency. All money raised is put back into improving the grounds and facilities and running the Annual Show. The Committee works with other Community Groups enabling them to fundraise towards their own needs through Showground events.
The Society has applied for a Grant to assist with the roading and are hopeful we can at last begin these long overdue works. The trees are growing impressively fast and Bev is working on the third stage of plantings. Thank you to all those who have supported this project so far. When the plantings are completed a plaque will be erected recognising everyone who has contributed. It will be a sight to see when the trees are in full bloom.
In the latter part of last year, we had issues with our office emails. These have now been rectified resulting in new contact details.

VacSwim
The National Drowning Report 2019 found people in regional and remote areas are 2.3 times more likely to drown than those in the metropolitan area.
Under the McGowan Government, costs for VacSwim have increased by more than 120 percent, with Labor threatening to remove programs from several regional communities with-out consultation.
In a policy developed with the support of Royal Lifesaving WA, the Nationals WA will make VacSwim free for children and families in regional WA, and expand the program to more locations if returned to Government next year.
Bushfire Preparedness
It would be amiss not to mention the devastation of the bushfires in the Eastern States—with loss of lives, homes, businesses and wildlife.
Drought and high fuel loads have significantly increased the severity of these fires, causing massive losses.
These fires have affirmed my support for our prescribed burn-ing program, designed to protect our regional communities.
It is a timely reminder not to be complacent about the risk of bushfires—and to ensure we all have a plan in case of an emergency. There is a wealth of information on the DFES website— https://www.dfes.wa.gov.au/safetyinformation/fire/bushfire/BushfireManualsandGuides/DFES_Bushfire-Homeowners_Survival_Manual.pdf
Royalties for Regions—where is it?
The Nationals flagship program—Royalties for Regions—has been massively cut by the Labor Government. If it had been spent as intended, this region could have seen investment in vital youth mental health programs, support for volunteer organisations and a myriad of community based projects that build vibrancy and opportunities for growth. Royalties for Regions is definitely worth fighting for!

27 YEARS ON!The Blackwood women’s Group has enjoyed a long time
of friendship and helping the community and is still going strong. The aim has never been to look for the spotlight but to be in the background. It started by cleaning up the oldest part of the cemetery which led to organising the memorial rose garden and a flower bed on either side of the cremation wall, which was built by Pat Corrigan and his son Patrick and they charged nothing.
Over the years help was given to raising money for the St. John Ambulance depot, the upgrading of the swimming pool and several other community projects.
Thanks to the kindness of the Bridgetown Agricultural Society the group meets in the president’s room at the show grounds on the first Thursday of every month. The get together usually has someone come and give a talk about other volunteer groups or how their group may need help but it always has a cup of tea and a cake.
No meeting is held in January as everyone has been so busy over Christmas. However, the ladies always meet on the first Thursday of February for an after Christmas get together lunch. This year it is going to the Scott’s Tavern at 1.pm. on February 6th. Everyone buys their own lunch and friends, husbands, neighbours, male as well as female are welcome to come along as it gives the group a chance to let the wider community know that they are always willing to help when needed.
Come and join in and enjoy the company of a great bunch of ladies.

Bio SecurityFoxes are in high numbers in Bridgetown, both in inner
residential and urban areas. Blackwood Biosecurity Officers are busy responding to landholder requests to assist with their removal.
The three of four foxes (pictured) removed by Blackwood Biosecurity from one Bridgetown property last week had been seen killing native waterbirds and then neighbour’s chooks.
Bridgetown resident, Trish says: “I was in the garden one day when I saw a fox casually sauntering up the road with a waterfowl in its mouth. The following day we saw one rounding up the water birds on the dam. Both occasions were in broad daylight! We’d also been hearing foxes at night and seeing evidence of their visits on our verandahs and in the garden, so we decided to call Blackwood Security for some help. Andrew and Jason came promptly to assess the situation. A camera was installed to determine just what was happening here at night. These guys have a great understanding of fox behaviour and so far have removed four. We know there are still more as we’ve heard them since Andrew’s last visit. We are staggered at the number of foxes in and around town, but very grateful to have help in getting rid of them. The Biosecurity Group is doing valuable work and we encourage others to take advantage of their services.” Trish
Blackwood Biosecurity Officer Andrew Gordon says that juvenile foxes are leaving the den and dispersing now and are looking for a free feed. “Foxes do very well in town sites where they can comfortably sustain population densities 10% higher than rural areas because towns provide a permanent source of easy food. In town sites more than half a fox’s diet can be scavenged food scraps, left over pet food, fruit straight from the tree, vegetables and grain, small pets and chickens. Native wildlife inhabiting gardens and creek lines are also easy prey and most of the time people are not even aware of fox presence until they are personally impacted”.
Exposure to fox hydatids post a risk to human health and if they visit your property to clean up a dog bowl or get into a rubbish bin, they can leave mange where they rub. Foxes can also spread parvo virus. If you have fox problems in town, on the edges or with rogue animals on farmland and need help, give Blackwood Biosecurity a call.
Our annual Bridgetown-Greenbushes Community Fox Shoot will be held on 20 and 21 March, 2020 with Tally breakfast on Sunday 22nd. Team registration Forms at Richfeeds Rural Supplies or ring Sheila at Blackwood Biosecurity 0475 774 558.
Stamp Display at Bridgetown Community Kiosk
The Bridgetown Manjimup Stamp & Coin Club will have a Stamp Display at the Bridgetown Community Kiosk on Saturday 15th February from 9am till 12pm.
If you are interested in collecting, then this is an opportunity to talk to members and find out more. Traditionally most enthusiasts collected stamps by country but increasingly people are collecting by themes, e.g. Art, Christmas, Motor Cars or Sport.
If you have a collection and you would like some advice concerning it then this is your chance to talk to enthusiasts and perhaps make new friends.
At present the club only has stamp collectors but if you are a coin collector, you are most welcome to come to our meetings on the 1st Thursday of each month at 4.30pm at the Bridgetown Library. Phone 0435 046 796

Bridgetown Repertory Club next productions is ‘Calendar Girls’Continued from page 4: Now this fabulous play has come to Bridgetown Repertory Club and will be directed by Robert Benson-Parry who describes Calendar Girls as a modern and worthwhile play.
“We have a cast of 12 players, nine females and three males, the cast have now been rehearsing for just over four weeks, leaving a further five weeks to get the play down pat.”
“Bridgetown Repertory has more female members then male members, so a strong female casting play like the Calendar Girls has suited our Club very well.”
“This year, 2020 is also the twentieth anniversary of the Yorkshire WI producing the calendar.”
“The play is divided into two dramas, making of the calendar and dealing with its success.”
“The play has comedy, along with special moments that evoke pity and sadness, the play shows the strength of sisterhood within the WI, which is easy with the success and lot harder with the aftermath, the general human drama is very real, these are ordinary women but the play is anything but ordinary.”
“With Calendar Girls, it might be assumed the nude scene would be the most difficult, but it actually allows a great deal of latitude with the staging,”

Riders Rev Up for the Blackwood Tour 2020
Continued from page 3: Timed this year to precede Perth’s iconic Dams
Challenge near Steele’s home town of Kalamunda, the Blackwood Tour provides a perfect training opportunity for riders to test their readiness.
The half course (65km) and ‘Not so Cozy’ (30km) courses are suited to riders with good general fitness and are equally as scenic.
Funds raised from the ride go to Blackwood Youth Action, a local Charity, to provide counselling and other mental health services to young people across the Warren Blackwood region. To date, the Blackwood Tour has raised approximately $85,000 to support youth services in the region.
Professor Fiona Stanley AC, the Patron of The Tour, is a highly respected researcher and advocate for child and adolescent health. “Across Australia, one in four young people will suffer a mental illness this year, with only a quarter of these receiving professional help,” said Professor Stanley. “Young people in rural Australia do not have access to the same services that their regional and city counterparts do. It is pleasing to see innovative, community driven projects to support young people to get the care that they need.”
Dr Sarah Youngson, Chair of Blackwood Youth Action, said that “within the Warren Blackwood region there are significant barriers to youth accessing mental health services. The funds raised from The Tour of the Blackwood help to break down a number of these barriers, allowing our young people to get the professional support they deserve.”

Adam Harvey to return to WA’s biggest country music festival for its 35th yearContinued from Cover; Festival music director Sharon Winter said with the countdown to the festival now underway, now was the time to start planning a trip to Boyup Brook.
“Boyup Brook is the premier country music destination in Western Australia,” Ms Winter said.
“The festival offers a great long weekend of entertainment, with camping options available for those who want to fully immerse themselves in this celebration of all things country.
“From live concerts to a street carnival with buskers and markets and children’s activities, as well as a ute and truck muster, there is plenty for all ages to enjoy at this fun and friendly festival.
“We look forward to welcoming back fans from the past 35 years – as well as seeing some new faces in the crowd.”
The main performances are held in Music Park, a beautiful outdoor venue set on the picturesque and shaded banks of the Blackwood River and within walking distance of the town centre where the street carnival is held.
The 35th annual festival takes place between February 13 and 16, and will incorporate the West Australian Country Music Awards presented by LiveLighter. Tickets are now on sale through the official event website − www.countrymusicwa.com.au . Weekend, day and camping passes available.

Pam Hamence Awarded an OAMContinued from page 2
In 2007 Pam and Brian Hamence along with Chris Sousa were the founding members of the WA Bush Brigades Historical Group.
“We are researching past fire activities, collecting local brigade’s history as well as collecting old brigade vehicles” Chris Sousa said.
Chris Sousa nominated Pam who received OAM. Pam has seen some changes in her roughly 50 years of service with the brigade.
“Today Bridgetown is in a strong position, along with the Fire and Emergency Levy which means no more fundraising for the brigades, the Bridgetown Shire has been proactive in providing more than is required with vehicles and equipment and support for the local brigades, we have a Brigade Building which houses our equipment, a command centre and a food preparation area, and the Leisure Centre is a wonderful evacuation centre for the town.”
“We have had 3 major fires in the district since 2004, but I feel our district is well prepared.” Chris went on to say.
Unusual Encounter with NatureIn January this year we had a series of very hot days and
hot nights, and by the end of this spell of weather everyone and everything was dry.
Early one morning whilst I was hand watering my garden a gathering of around 10 male magpies sensing the water being used swooped in and started to drink and wash themselves from the water dripping from the watered plants, all be it at a safe distance.
Three of the Magpies approached the plants I was watering to get a real drenching, fluffing their feathers enabling the water to wash off the dust between the feathers, then preening themselves under the spray of water; I was very surprised to witness these wild birds getting so close, they were so close I could touch them.
The next few days cooled off bringing an end to the hot spell, my new found friendship with these birds has also come to an end, the boundaries have been set back to three metres with a cautious eye being kept on my presence at all times.

Southern Forests and Valleys Awarded Red Grant Funding
Southern Forests and Valleys Tourism Association received $74,945 through Regional Economic Developments grant.
Chairperson Paul Matenaar stated the grant would enable the development and marketing of the organisation brand and the Southern Forests & Valleys region through entry-point signage, digital campaigns and fostering member partnerships for product development. Mr Matenaar believes the Grant will be a major step towards a united front in promoting tourism in the Southern Forests and Valleys.
“This funding is perfectly timed for our new Association. It will help us be the united and strong voice for tourism in the Southern Forests and Blackwood Valley region for the purpose increasing the tourism profile, tourist visitation and expenditure to benefit of our local economy, jobs and businesses.” Southern Forests and Valleys Chairperson, Paul Matenaar said.
“This is brilliant news for tourism in the inland parts of the stunning south-west. It will give us the opportunity to showcase the great mix of calm and chaos that can be experienced a stone's throw from all the big-name places.” Southern Forests and Valleys CEO, Wendy Duncan said.
“The Southern Forests Blackwood Valley Tourism Association supported by the Shires of Manjimup, Bridgetown-Greenbushes and Nannup, delivers a much-needed regional tourism brand for the Warren-Blackwood area, which will promote tourism and grow jobs in the region.” Hon Adele Farina MLC, Member for South West Region said.
The Watcher The last Council meeting for2019 was held in
Greenbushes and well attended by the locals. The most interesting item is the planned reinvention /
rejuvenation of the Town Hall and Civic Centre starting in 2020.Originally the Mechanics Institute built in 1877 this made
way for the present complex with plans drawn up in 1936. Undoubtedly in its heyday the building would have hosted many weddings, dances and movies. However although the administrative side has had the necessary upgrade the Town Hal itself presently looks like it`s seen better days.
Now plans are well along to return it to its former glory and then some. Is this the first step for Bridgetown to claim its original glorious heritage – we hope so.
