General Use

• Never use in the eyes.

• Keep out of the ears, nose and ‘south of the border’ without professional advice

• Skin sensitivity has to be determined. Use vegetable oil to dilute, not water, when the oil is on the body. Start slow.

• Follow label directions. They are there to protect you.

• Keep your blends in dark glass bottles, away from heat and light

• Shelf life: 2-6 years and some longer. Enemies are heat, light, oxygen, your unwashed fingers

General Safety

• Avoid if pregnant, especially in the first trimester. Thereafter consult a professional.

• With children under 2, caution or avoid. If you go here, use the soles of feet or diffuse.

• Rosemary: Avoid if epileptic or high BP

• Clary Sage: Avoid if estrogen induced tumors

• Eucalyptus: Be careful to smell first if any asthma challenges

• Wintergreen: Avoid if aspirin sensitive or ADD/ADHD

• An Aromatherapy book on general use of oils can give you a complete reference.

Oils For Internal Use

• Not recommended by NSP as your safe use of oils is the goal. We train you within a scope of use that is considered safe for beginners and non-licensed individuals.

• A licensed aroma therapist or doctor may recommend internal use.

• FDA: Many essential oils are generally recognized as safe (GRAS) as flavoring agents (1-2 drops in foods) Common examples: lemon, orange, grapefruit, peppermint, cinnamon, clove.

SENSITIVITY TESTINGFragrance allergy affects 1% and is usually due to synthetics

• Allergic reactivity is of much rarer occurrence than with synthetic fragrances.

• When to do a patch test: if you are prone to hay fever, asthma or other types of allergic reactions. Double the strength of your massage dilution and apply to inside of arm for 24 hours, using an adhesive bandage-- Dr. Jane Buckle

• Lemongrass, Oregano, Cinnamon, Clove, Thyme, Pine needle, and some citrus oils may always need a Carrier Oil. When in doubt, use it.

3 Main Functions of Authentic Essential Oils 1. Promote healthy vitality

and energy

2. Promote healthy detoxification. When the body has the proper energy to cleanse cellular and environmental toxins, our total toxicity levels may stay in a healthier range.

3. Promote healthy circulation of energy

The body should ideally do all of these.

Essential oils provide another source of

vitality that our body can use to be in health

Unique Support for Healthy Detoxification of cells including those in the Nervous System

• They work at the molecular level

• They have been studied for their ability to assist healthy cellular clearing of faulty information from cellular memory and support healthy repair of the DNA.

• This may even play an important part in creating changes in behaviors

• In this manner, essential oils are used to enhance our mental and emotional health and well-being without side effects.

OILS AND THE SPINE—A FAMILY GUIDELINE (TO PRACTICE AT HOME)

• First gently drop an oil blend such as Refuge, Core, or Recover (8-12 drops) down the spine.

• Option: add drops of Carrier Oil down the spine also

Step TwoFeather it in with the fingers on the nail side from the spine outward. Keep going until it is absorbed

WHEN TO MAKE A LINIMENT

• Up to 10 drops of the preferred EO to a teaspoon of water, raw apple cider vinegar, or witch hazel

• Shake before using

• Moisture helps the oils penetrate and dilutes the oils for fast, even distribution

• Liniments are preferred to assist healthy foot immunity and to promote comfort in large areas of skin.

• Contains many beneficial ingredients, including vitamin E, vitamin B complex, silicon, chromium, copper and zinc. It also can address the average person’s lack of iodine-rich foods, as it has a very high percentage of iodine at 82 percent — in part, iodine gives jojoba oil its power to soothe

• Our sebaceous glands are microscopic glands in our skin that secrete an oily or waxy matter: sebum, which is very similar to jojoba oil

• As we age our sebaceous glands produce less sebum, which can lead to dry skin and hair, or even dandruff or itchy scalp.

Perfumery Guidelines

• Top Notes—the first impression—fresh, volatile, and stimulating (bergamot, orange, neroli, red mandarin, lemon) They have a fast action and disappear quickly within about 30 minutes

• Middle Notes—Soothing and balancing with softer tones-- the stable heart of the fragrance and majority of the blend. These emerge more fully 1-3 hours after applications & after the first impression (geranium, lavender, rose, marjoram, rosemary)

• Base Notes—rich, heavier, thicker oils; appear slowly, linger longer (rose, jasmine, frankincense, myrrh, ylang ylang, geranium, sandalwood) They are often relaxing with deep, warm, romantic and often sweet aromas.

• Choose up to 5 oils. Start with the base, then the middle, then the top

Common Ratios: Top notes: 3 drops Middle notes: 2 drops Base notes: 1 drop

How Could My Body Temperature Influence My Metabolism?

• Heat regulation: hypothalamus and thyroid influence metabolism and adrenals

• Energy, detox, acid release, nutrient, O2 supply, general mood are influenced by our body temp.

• A few tenths of a degree (95.9-97.3) may make the difference between feeling:

• tired and burnt out or vital

• sick or healthy

• weak or strong

• happy or depressed

• What if the term: “old age or natural decline is really a function of our body temperature?

.9 Degrees Drop in Last 50 Years in Japan

• Recorded by Japanese researcher: Ishihara Yumi Ph,D.

• He considered a low temp to never be healthy or natural.

• A 1.8 degree drop causes a loss of 50% of our enzyme activity!*

• 36% of immune functions decline

• 12% of basic metabolic functions decline

• 50% of enzymatic functions decline

• The Optimal Goal: 98.05-99.15

• Lower body temperature can often be observed to be present in the following observations:

Fatigue, obesity, muscle aches, depression, inability to concentrate, allergies, anxieties, dry skin, constipation,

fluid retention, intolerance to cold or heat and more.

The Need for Iodine

• In Japan, the daily dose of iodine obtained from the diet averages around 2,000 to 3,000 micrograms (mcg) or 2 to 3 milligrams (mg), and there's reason to believe this may be a far more adequate amount than the US recommended daily allowance (RDA) of 150 mcg.

• The Japanese are consuming 16-17 times our recommended dose of iodine per day.

• Excellent sources: seaweed and algae

Where did our Iodine Go?

• The Total Diet Study, performed by the FDA, reported an iodine intake of 621 micrograms for two-year-olds between 1974 and 1982, compared with 373 micrograms between 1982 and 1991. During the same time period, the baking industry replaced iodine-based anti-caking agents with bromine-based agents.

• In addition to iodine's disappearance from our food supply, exposure to toxic competing halogens –bromine, fluorine, chlorine, and perchlorate– has dramatically increased.

• We absorb these halogens through our food, water, medications, and environment, and they selectively occupy iodine receptors.
