A Masterplan for the Gozo CitadelThe old fortified city on the island of Gozo

Feature

8 - your Gozo guide

With its distinctive skyline and imposing military architecture, Cittadella, the ancient fortified city, stands out as Gozo’s major landmark, a beacon visible from all over the island. The citadel

itself is rich in buildings of architectural and historical value, while its slopes afford a habitat to numerous rare species of flora and fauna.

Page 9: Your Gozo Guide 08

The Ministry for Gozo recently presented the completion of the Citadel Masterplan, a project which will not only showcase the Cittadella’s heritage, but

can foster new, sustainable activities including local arts and crafts whilst promoting Gozitan traditions and customs. The Masterplan proposes a long-term policy framework for managing

the Cittadella in a sustainable manner, where top priority should be given for safeguarding local heritage. At the same time, the natural and cultural assets of

this unique historical site must be promoted in such a way as to foster social and economic development. Moreover, the Masterplan complies with Government’s Policy of changing

your Gozo guide - 9

Page 10: Your Gozo Guide 08

Gozo into an ecological island, setting out long-term strategies on the issues of Environmental Protection and development in Education and Tourism. The Masterplan project, which was launched a year and a half ago, was supported by a grant

from Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway through the EEA financial mechanism. The Ministry for Gozo, as overall project promoter and coordinator, entrusted the drafting of the masterplan to a multidisciplinary team, led by Politecnica (Italy) following a relative call for application. It includes several studies on various aspects such as archaeology, geology, military architecture, restoration, flora

and fauna, and the better use and management of this site. An important aspect of this project was the wide consultation process that involved various stakeholders and other entities having particular interests connected with the site.

The results of the Citadel Masterplan will serve as a basic guide in the valorisation of this important site whilst giving the best recommendations with regards to better use and management of its resources. This will ensure better regeneration and the preservation of this unique historical treasure that represents one of Gozo’s main attractions.
