A warm welcome to everyone!

On behalf of the Committee and the members of the Royal Excelsior Tennisclub Hasselt, the Van Mossel Bruyninx Young Champions Cup organization team I extend everyone a warm and hearty welcome at the city of Hasselt and our tournament.

We are really delighted to be allowed and to be able to orga-nize this fantastic event for the 21st time. With the help and effort of many enthusiastic volunteers we think that we have succeeded in creating the best circumstances for the world top players of the near future.

The efforts of many professional parties and the hand-over of the experience of my predecessor Nicolas Geukens were quite welcome to us and I would like to thank them as well.

On behalf of all the people who are somehow involved in the organization I wish all of you a nice and pleasant week at our tennis club. Enjoy the games and our team is at your service!

From its earliest tournaments into the 1970s and its official creation in 1990, the Tennis Europe Junior Tour has come to be univer-sally recognised as the best starting point for a successful career in tennis. A string of world#1s, from Ivan Lendl and Steffi Graf to Roger Federer and Victoria Azarenka chose this path, alongside non-Europeans such as Lindsay Davenport, Lleyton Hewitt, Juan Martin del Potro and Andy Roddick, all of who had an early taste of success on the courts

of Europe’s premier junior events. The

increasingly professional organisation of

the tournaments has meant that the Tennis

Europe Junior Tour effectively serves as

a dress rehearsal for life as a professional

tennis player, with a cumulative rank-

ing system, a season-ending

Masters tournament, Player of the Year awards,

online ranking information, calendars and the

playing records of potential opponents.

The Tour has expanded from 43 tourna-

ments in its first year to over 350 annual

events for players of age categories 12, 14 and

16 & under. Care is taken that the focus is

not solely on performance, with

sightseeing tours, players par-

ties and educational events

held in tandem, ensuring a

social and informative aspect

to tournaments which allows

players to focus on

more than just

their tennis and

provides an excel-

lent opportunity

to learn about

anti-doping,

n u t r i t i o n

and training

patterns, to

name just a

top players earn an

early chance to repre-

Dear Friends,

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to this event, part of the Tennis Europe Junior Tour. Each year, international tournaments such as this one offer valuable playing oppor-tunities and a unified ranking system to over 20,000 young athletes from all over the world, competing in three age categories; 12, 14 and 16 & Under.

The Tennis Europe Junior Tour was launched in 1990. Since then, the Tour has given almost all of today’s top professio-nals a first taste of international tournament play. Legends of the game from Martina Hingis and Kim Clijsters to Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer all won Tennis Europe Junior Tour events on their paths to Grand Slam glory.

As the Tour continues to expand, so do the services that Tennis Europe strives to provide. We have invested heavily to enable players to be able to enter and withdraw from events online, a procedure which has given participants greater freedom and responsibility in planning their competitive schedules. More information than ever before is also availa-ble online. Players can now also personalise their profiles with photos and information about their game, while keeping in touch with the latest developments on the Tour through Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, or via our free mobile app.

Our latest major innovation is the Tennis Europe Junior School. Designed to prepare young athletes for life as pro-fessional tennis players, the School has been coordinated in association with the sport’s other governing bodies (the ITF, ATP and WTA Tours) and covers a wide range of important topics with a series of informational videos clips, which can be found on our website.

It is important to recognise that many hundreds of tourna-ment organisers, committees, clubs and officials work tire-lessly each year to stage the events that make up the Tennis Europe Junior Tour. I would like to extend my warm gratitude to them, as well as to acknowledge the invaluable contribu-tions of all the sponsors and volunteers, whose generous support and hospitality make these tournaments possible.

I’d also like to wish the best of luck to the players. I hope that this event will be a successful, educational and – most importantly – a fun experience for you!

Beste tennisliefhebbers,

Van harte welkom op de Koninklijke Excelsior Tennisclub in Hasselt! Al 21 jaar organiseert deze club ‘De Van Mossel Bruyninx Young Champions Cup’, een internationaal tennis-tornooi voor jonge tennissers tussen 12 en 14 jaar. De beste jeugdspelers ter wereld zullen deze week tonen wat ze in hun mars hebben. Er zal ongetwijfeld heel wat toptennis van de bovenste plank op het menu staan.

We zijn uiteraard fier dat we dit tornooi, dat deel uitmaakt van de ‘Young Stars World Series’, kunnen steunen. Het is voor ons heel belangrijk dat de toptalenten van de toekomst ook in eigen land kunnen deelnemen aan dergelijk ‘grand slam’. Zo kunnen ze voor hun thuissporters punten sprok-kelen voor hun plaats op de wereldranking. Bij Tennis Vlaan-deren dragen we FairPlay bovendien hoog in het vaandel en daarom is er ook een perfecte match met dit tornooi. Er wordt heel wat aandacht aan besteed op en naast het veld.

Sinds dit jaar neemt Philippe Jankelevitch de fakkel over van Nicolas Geukens om het organisatieteam te leiden. Ik wens Philippe dan ook veel succes en bedank Nicolas van harte voor de uitstekende organisatie van de voorbije jaren. Ook een welgemeende merci aan het hele team van vrijwilligers, medewerkers en officials die alles in goede banen leiden en dit tornooi zo naar een hoger niveau tillen. Jullie zijn van on-schatbare waarde! Tot slot een dankwoord aan de sponsors van dit tornooi voor hun onmisbare steun.

Beste sportliefhebbers

Het is een eer om nu al voor de 21ste keer gaststad te mogen zijn voor de Young Champions Cup, een jeugdtor-nooi met de allure van een Grandslamtornooi bij de profs. Dat is geen Hasseltse overdrijving. Dat is een feit. Kijk maar eens naar de spelers en speelsters die hier in het verleden op het Hasseltse gravel het beste van zichzelf gaven. Heel wat van die jongens en meisjes gooiden later nog hoge ogen op het internationale tenniscircuit. Het is prachtig dat een stad als Hasselt deel heeft uitgemaakt van hun ontwikkeling tot proftennisser. Een tornooi van dit kaliber moeten we dus zeker koesteren.

Bovendien is dit tornooi extra speciaal omdat het gedragen wordt door vrijwilligers. Dat is al 21 jaar zo en het stadsbe-stuur geeft daar graag (logistieke) steun aan. Het zorgt voor een aparte sfeer van bijzondere verbondenheid binnen de club. Een sfeer die we als stad graag uitdragen naar - in dit geval letterlijk - de rest van de wereld. De commentaren van de deelnemers en hun entourage die de organisatie jaarlijks krijgen, liegen er niet om: men komt graag naar Hasselt. Ook de formule van gastgezinnen, waarbij de spelers en speel-sters bij families thuis verblijven in plaats van in een hotel, typeert onze Hasseltse gastvrijheid. Nergens in het circuit gebeurt dit. Maar in Hasselt blijven er gastfamilies bereid om één, twee of zelfs meer spelers gedurende de tornooiweek op te nemen in hun familie. Chapeau voor hen. Jullie zijn een wezenlijk onderdeel van het succes van dit tornooi.

Gastvrijheid en verbondenheid: het zijn mooie waarden die aan dit tornooi kleven. Ook daarom mogen we terecht fier zijn op de organisatie. De feesteditie van vorig jaar ligt ondertussen achter ons en we kunnen volop vooruit kijken. We zijn vertrokken voor opnieuw een periode van 20 jaar. Een periode waar we nieuwe sterren-in-wording kunnen zien passeren. Een periode waarin nieuwe (internationale) vriend-schappen kunnen gesmeed worden. Een periode waar ook weer nieuwe mensen opstaan om hun schouders onder dit tornooi te zetten. Een periode waar Hasselt op de (tennis)kaart zal blijven staan.

Ik wil daarvoor in naam van het stadsbestuur iedereen danken die van dichtbij of veraf meewerkt aan het succesvol verloop van dit mooie tornooi.
