By Debbie Rogers Spring has finally arrived in Almaguin, and it is time for minor hockey players to hang up their skates and head on outdoors as the 2008-2009 Almaguin minor hockey season officially comes to an end. While most teams finished up this past weekend, the midget/ bantam house league teams skate for the last time in Almaguin this Sunday in Burk’s Falls. The tykes take to the ice for the last time in Orillia April 4 and 5. Midget/Bantam House League: Sunday, March 29 is the final day for the bantam/midget house league teams to take to the ice as they skate for the last time in the year-end tournament. If you want to catch some hockey action this weekend, the tournament starts at 9 a.m. in Burk’s Falls. Come on out and show support to the house league teams competing. The midget/bantam house league banquet is a potluck dinner in celebration of the season and will be held at the Burk’s Falls arena on Wednesday, April 1 at 6 p.m. Jr. House League: Will celebrate their season with a year-end banquet and potluck dinner on Monday, March 30 at the arena in South River at 6:30 p.m. Tyke: The tykes and beginners wrapped up the season with a final scrimmage. Players divided themselves into two teams to play against one another. Afterwards snacks and awards were given out to all participating players as proud parents looked on. Special awards were given out in the tyke division. Voted upon by the parents, Most Valuable Player went to Nick Coleman, Most Dedicated to Dragon St. Onge, Most Sportsmanlike to Tyler Miller, and Most Improved to Tyrel Milne. The coaching staff would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents for supporting them and the players throughout the hockey season. The tykes went on to play against the Bracebridge rep team after a full day of wrapup activ- ity, falling short of a win 3-1. Tyler Miller played in net, showing that he was well prepared to take on the role of goalie for the tyke team. Braydon Sorensen scored the lone goal for Almaguin with assists from Tyrel Milne and Kaleb Dun- nett. The tykes will be completing the season with a two-day tourna- ment in Orillia April 4 and 5. Peewee: The Almaguin Ice Devil peewee team participated in the Muskoka-Parry Sound playdown finals versus Huntsville on March 13, 14 and 15, which proved to be an exciting weekend of hockey for the team. Friday night in Sun- dridge saw the two teams go head to head. The Devils were lacking their usual fire and Huntsville capitalized with a win of 3-0. The group headed to Huntsville the next day and brought their A game, tying the series with a win of 8-4. Everything clicked for the team this game and everyone played to win. Great effort by all with Ral- phie Burton netting four goals and Dryden Sollman with two. Brit- ton Whitehead and Dillon Flynn each scored singles in this very competitive game. Assists went to Jessie Houlton, Britton Whitehead, Bryan Austin, and Dryden Soll- man. Sunday the team was back in Huntsville with all the pressure of a final series game. The Huntsville team answered back to the defeat of the day before with a vengeance but was stonewalled by goaltender Nick Ramsperger and some very solid play by the defence. The pee- wees won the series 2-0 and were named the 2009 Muskoka-Parry Sound B champs. Both goals in the final game came in the second, the first by Carl Grin from Simon Hol- enski and the second by Ralphie Burton from Britton Whitehead. It was a great way to end the season! This past weekend saw the team join the midgets and the atoms in Baltimore, Ontario for the Cross Border Class Tournament. The tournament was a perfect way to have some fun on and off the ice as the team wound up the season in style. The Ice Devils did very well, going undefeated three games, earning them a place in the A championship round against home team Baltimore. The Devils were unable to capture the title but finished as finalists in the round and went home with some great memories and strengthened friendships within the team. Here is to a great season, everyone. Relax and enjoy the summer! See you in September. Just a reminder that the rep banquet will be held April 20 at the SSJ arena in Sundridge at 5 p.m. The potluck dinner and awards ceremony will mark the end of the 2008-2009 season for the Almaguin Ice Devils rep teams. Enjoy your off time, everyone. Remember that training camp begins in just a few short months. Until we all meet at the rink again, stay active, have fun, and I will catch you rinkside next season. Although it was a clear day, it was pretty cool if you were out in the wind. Eventually it will warm up. Then we can all get grumpy about all the bugs and mud. April is also cancer month. During the month volunteers for the Canadian Cancer Society will be going door to door canvass- ing for donations. Daffodils will also be on sale around town as well. You will be able to recognize the volunteers from their I.D. You will also note that these are local people who work hard for the Can- cer Society. Our family has had wall-to-wall kids this week as they celebrated March break. Our niece Laurie Stover, friend Randy and her family from St. Thomas, Ontario enjoyed their visit with grandparents Fred and Esther Stover and the Pennell family. We have also had Jill Gould and family here from Collingwood. During their visit we celebrated the first day of spring by going to Sudbury to Science North and also Dynamic Earth. Before we went home we sat outside an ice cream store sampling our ice cream treats. Even though it was really cold sitting at the picnic table shivering in the wind, we toughed it out so we can truly say we had a picnic on the first day of spring. The South River Agricultural Society is looking for a new cover design for their Fall Fair Specials Book. What they would like is a digital picture from last year’s fair.
