McDougall Fire Chief Brian Leduc said the two fire interrupter devices donated to the McDougall and Seguin fire departments have the potential to save firefighters’ lives, reduce damage to burning structures, and save water. “It essentially snuffs the fire out, without initially having to go in and put firefighters in extreme danger.” The unit, called FIT (fire interruption technology), looks like a red land mine with a strap, and Leduc said firefighters arriving at a blaze would pull a ripcord on the device, and throw it into the structure before entering themselves. Once it detonates, it fills the structure with a chemical mixture which disrupts the flames, making it easier for firefighters to contain the blaze. David Sumner, an emergency fire specialist working on behalf of ARA, the Vancouver company which designed the FIT, made the trip out from his home near Huntsville to hand over the donated units to Seguin Fire Chief Dave Thompson and Chief Leduc, with Parry Sound Fire Chief Lawrence Green looking on. Sumner said they’ve been testing the device for about 15 years, although it’s been on the market for the last two. It was first tested, with great success, in Alberta and in the U.S., and Sumner said the fire department in Owen Sound carries them on their trucks. “To date there’s been about 28 successful deployments,” said Sumner. “It’s a potassium bicarbonate, with some alums and salts.” He said the chemicals are non-toxic and biodegradable. The company ran up against a road block when presenting their product to Toronto’s fire department, said Sumner. The firefighters’ union was worried that if the device works as well as it’s supposed to, it could take away firefighters’ jobs, he said. “It’s not meant to replace any jobs, it’s meant to be another tool in the tool box,” he said. “It’s not an extinguisher. . . it’s to buy time for first responders, so when they get there (at a fire) they can throw it in, and it knocks the flames down.” He said Toronto fire has since changed their tune, and a demonstration of the product will take place March 7. It’s not a cheap toy; each unit costs $1,295. But Sumner said the savings far outweigh the initial price. “I feel it’s a tremendous tool for the fire departments, and for the people - it preserves their personal effects.” He said not everyone agrees. Some feel, since the units costs so much, and water is free, it makes more sense to fight fires with the latter. But Leduc said it’s not just about the money saved. The reduced risk for firefighters is what really attracted him to the devices. “I say it’s $1,295, and all the firefighters come home.” He said insurance companies want to see the product used, and in some cases have even purchased the units for fire departments because they increase the departments’ ability to save their clients’ property. Sumner said if firefighters can cut down on property loss to fire even a little bit, it works out to big savings for everyone. “If you even just save the foundation, that’s $30,000 right there.” Leduc said the donated units will be used at the next available opportunity, and the fire chiefs will decide whether or not they’d like to keep buying them based on the results. Evan French/North Star, Fire chiefs from Parry Sound, McDougall and Seguin pose with the fire interruption technology (FIT) that will be used to reduce damage to buildings and reduce water usage. The FIT unit is thrown into burning buildings before the firefighters enter and contains a chemical that, once detonated, douses the flames.

New gadget donated to local fire brigadesBy Evan FrEnch North Star Staff

A piece of equipment a local fire chief said could be a “game changer” for firefighters arrived in Parry Sound Monday. McDougall Fire Chief Brian Leduc said the two fire interrupter devices donated to the McDougall and Seguin fire departments have the potential to save firefighters’ lives, reduce damage to burning structures, and save water.

“It essentially snuffs the fire out, without initially having to go in and put firefighters in extreme danger.”

The unit, called FIT (fire interruption technology), looks like a red land mine with a strap, and Leduc said firefighters arriving at a blaze would pull a ripcord on the device, and throw it into the structure before entering themselves.
