Graduation Ceremo-ny Ideas for Home-schooled Students

All across the country students and parents choose to go the less-traditional educational route by participat-ing in homeschooling. Even though students are not being educat-ed in a formal school building, seniors who are about to graduate often desire traditional ceremonies to mark the end of their forma-tive school years.

The U.S. Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences reports that there are between 1.5 and 2 mil-lion homeschooled chil-dren. There are a num-ber of reasons students and parents forgo a traditional school set-ting. Many cite prefer-ences to receive reli-gious or moral lessons in addition to secular coursework. Others are concerned about the school environ-ment, such as safety or peer pressure. Some are dissatisfied with the academic institu-tion.

Even if students are schooled at home, they must meet milestones and standards set by the particular school district or state. Once students have com-pleted a set number of

credits or coursework, they are eligible to “graduate” from high school. Homeschooled students may want a formal ceremony to mark the momentous occasion.

Depending on the homeschooling scenar-io, students can have individual ceremonies or be part of a group effort. Many students participate under an umbrella homeschool-ing association. This may be overseen by members of a church or other organization. All of the students who participate with this organization can grad-uate together. Parents and other educators can coordinate a cer-emony to take place at a local auditorium.

Students who are homeschooled on an individual basis can invite friends and fam-ily to attend a small ceremony adminis-tered by the parent or educator who has been responsible for the student’s education. This can take place at home, a restaurant or another special locale. This ceremony can be

as personalized as the student desires.

Homeschooled stu-dents can rent tradi-tional caps and gowns if they choose to dress the part of a graduate for photos. There’s also the possibility of con-tacting the local school district and seeing if a homeschooled student can participate with that school for the com-mencement ceremony.

Parents and other educators who want to create personalized di-plomas and other items for the homeschooled students can use Web sites like www.home-schooldiploma.com. They offer a number of customizable items from rings to certifi-cates.

Students who have received a quality ed-ucation while being homeschooled can participate in the tra-ditional memory-mak-ers, including a formal commencement cer-emony. The intimate nature of the event can lead to a number of unique possibilities.

Rank: ValedictorianWhat high school accomplish-

ments are you most proud of? I am most pleased with the honors of Varsity Cheer captain, placing 1st at the State Meet in Track and Miss SEH. I had so many wonderful memories through cheerleading and track. I had a great sponsor and coach who always backed me up, and Miss SEH is also such an honor because it could have gone to a number of deserving girls.

What are your thoughts on leading your graduating class as an honor student? I am extremely blessed and still in awe with all that God has blessed me with. It is a huge honor because we have such an intellectual class.

What are your future plans? I plan to attend LSU as a Golden Girl while majoring in Microbiology. I will then continue on to LSU Medical School in hopes of becoming an OB/GYN.

As a young adult in society, what issues/problems would you like to solve? I would love to be able to solve the issue of premarital sex and teen pregnancies. I believe many girls simply lack self-confidence. Through dancing especially I have gained so much confi-dence in myself. I would love to share this gift with other girls. Every woman should feel confident enough to make a man wait for her until marriage.

What are you going to miss most about high school? I will miss the great Catholic atmosphere at St. Eds. I love that I can always find someone at this school who is genuinely kind and

willing to help. After completing your studies,

do you plan to come back to this community? Why or why not? Yes, Eunice is my home. My dream is to come back as an OB/GYN, work with my father, and slowly take over his practice.

What experience/advice do you leave high school with now? My par-ents and dance teacher have instilled in me that perseverance is the key to succeding in life. I believe this is my strongest attribute and will continue to aid me when facing the troubles of life.

Besides education, what do you hope to gain from college experi-ence? I am excited to see the world from a new perspective. I hope to gain a won-derful education while strengthening my own Catholic values.

Lauren Heinen -Valedictorian

Lauren Heinen

Parents: Steven and Lori MoosaRank: SalutatorianWhat high school accomplish-

ments are you most proud of? I am proud of being designated the number one player on the girl’s tennis team and receiving awards for being the Outstanding Tennis Player and the Hardest Worker.

What are your thoughts on leading your graduating class as an honor student? Being the Salutatorian is a great honor. I have worked hard for it during my four years in high school and I hope my hard work has inspired my classmates to perform to their best abilities.

What are your future plans? I plan to pursue a degree in Architecture.

As a young adult in society, what issues/problems would you like to solve? I would like to see something done about the apathy of students relat-ing to academics. We need to make excelling academically as important as excelling in sports by rewarding and acknowledging students for their academic performance, getting parents more involved in encouraging their children to perform well in school and to make parents and students more aware of the success that can be achieved through academic excellence.

What are you going to miss most about high school? I will miss my teachers who have done such a great job in enriching my mind.

After completing your studies, do you plan to come back to this com-munity? Why or why not? Yes, I would like to return because I will miss my family and friends who live here. This place is truly my home.

What experience/advice do you leave high school with now? My teachers have taught me to never give up on one’s dreams. This is the best advise I have ever been given.

Besides education, what do you hope to gain from college experi-ence? I hope to gain more life experi-ence and learn more about the world and the different people who make it up.
