6 You Are Here Fall 2010
Cooler temps in the Valley don’t mark an end to the arts season. In fact, art events in the fall are just as vibrant as the heat of summer, though they are definitely much more welcome. West Valley museums offer you lectures and exhibits every week. Learn the history of beads and jewelry at the Bead Museum with their presentation of “From Caves to Castles: If Beads Could Talk.” The Deer Valley rock Art Center features walks and talks on “Historical Graffiti” and desert birds. If performance art is more your style, there is plenty to see and do. Go all out and celebrate Halloween properly with Theater Works’ Killer Halloween. The Arizona Broadway Theatre is about to
wrap up its run of the award-winning I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change and continue with two musicals about showbiz for fall: My Way and 42nd Street. Make sure to check out Jobing.com Arena’s calendar, as they are sure to have many musical acts in town this season, such as Carrie Underwood. Whether you prefer art exhibits, festivals, concerts or plays, West Valley venues will be able to provide with something you’ll enjoy!

There’s no limit to the trinkets you can find in Glendale, Peoria and beyond! With some effort and patience, you will have a handful of independent clothing stores at your fingertips. However, if that sounds like a bit too much work, here are a few local favorites! Matilda’s Vintage in Glendale specializes in cocktail dresses and jewelry from the 1930’s to the 1950’s. Check them out at matildascloset.com for information about what’s in stock. One shop that certainly lives up to its name is Clara’s Neat repeat in Peoria. Visitors praise it for its wonderfully organized collection of antique frocks. If you’re looking for contemporary threads for your little or big bundles of joy, then
Kid to Kid is the right shop for you. Travel through time by a year or even a century in these hidden gem boutiques. If you have the patience to search for a perfect vintage dress through trunk after trunk and hanger after hanger, then search and do some digging amongst West Valley strip malls for your new favorite vintage shop.

One of the most exciting parts about fall is being able to enjoy the cooler weather with your family out of doors. Soak up the autumn atmosphere at Halloween festivals in the month of October and maybe a hay ride or two in November. Visit the corn maze and pumpkin patches at Tolmachoff Farms in Glendale from October 1st-November 21st. On October 30th, you can check out the Halloween Monster Bash at the Peoria Sports Complex; the event is complete with on-sight trick-or-treating and craft tables. This fall in children’s entertainment, Spotlight Youth Theatre is showcasing Guys and Dolls. While adult-centered Broadway musicals might force your kids to catch some Z’s, a cast of their peers is sure to engage them and grab their
attention. With Halloween and Thanksgiving out of the way, you will be able to welcome the winter holidays with Old town Peoria’s Holiday Festival on December 3rd. Play in the snow and participate in the 19th Annual Gingerbread House Competition.
QUICK TIPS
Behind-the-ScenesDo you and your kids like
chocolate? Is it even necessary to ask? If you’ve got a hankering to see
the process of making chocolate, we’ve got a suggestion for you that
even Willy Wonka himself might envy. Cerreta Candy Company
in old town Glendale tours are offered Monday through Friday at
10am and 1pm.5345 W Glendale Ave.

pA Strike OutAre the kids bored at home? Take
them to Peoria Lanes to bowl the night away and treat them to one of America’s past times. If regular bowling isn’t wild enough for you,
plan your very own XTrEME Bowling event, complete with lights,
music, food and adventure. 8475 W. Olive Ave.

Space and BeyondIf you’re looking for an interactive and educational activity for your
family, you will definitely find something exciting to do at the Challenger Space Center
in Peoria. Throughout October and November, the center will be featuring a Halloween Fright Mission, stargazing and even a

22 You Are Here Fall 2010
In the desert, the leaves might not be changing, but there is still have one surefire way of knowing when autumn starts: the beginning of football and hockey season. As we get into the swing of things for fall, it’s good to know that for the next few months, you and your family can almost always catch a Cardinals game at the University of Phoenix Stadium or watch the Phoenix Coyotes hit the ice at the Jobing.com Arena. Some games you definitely won’t want to miss this fall are the Cardinals taking on the New Orleans Saints on October 10th, the October 16th Coyotes match against the Detroit redwings, and the 49ers versus the Cardinals on November 29th, just after Thanksgiving weekend. If you’re not
a fan of spectator sports, fear not! revisit an old favorite or try something new. You might be surprised about all of the alternative sports available to you, whether you prefer to sit back and watch a little league game, get your hands dirty and rock-climb or turn your body into a pretzel with some sweet yoga moves. There’s plenty of enjoyable recreational activities in the West Valley that you can discover and enjoy!

While there will be no shortage of football and hockey games in the West Valley this fall season, everyone needs a favorite place to enjoy a game via TV, preferably with good food and great people at their side. And when it’s not game night, there’s often nothing better than taking the night off from cooking and finding a restaurant that can do all the work for you and make it seem effortless. If you’re in the mood for a night out with few complications, consider trying Firebirds Wood Fired Grill in Peoria, where the steaks are delicious, the drinks reasonably priced, and the portions generous. Locals and visitors alike should appreciate Lakeside Bar and Grill in Peoria, which has a menu for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Or
are you looking for some “Irish hospitality”? You can get that and more at O’Sullivan’s Sports Bar & Grill in Glendale which offers customers a fun twist on typical diner fare.
