2013 Record: 6–1 in the con-ference, 7–2 overall

The Titans, in 2013, tied for the Minnesota River Conference Championship with win over Belle Plaine in the last game of regular season, (tied with Belle Plane and Watertown-Mayer with 6-1 conference records). It lost in Section 1AAA quar-terfinal game to Cannon Falls 26–29.

KEY PLAYERSOffenseLook for returning starters

tight end Charley Simonette, named All-Conference in 2013, who had 22 receptions for 315 yards and three TDs last season as well as wide receiver Jamison Beulke and guard Jon Reak. Beulke had nine receptions for

106 yards and one touchdown in 2014.

DefenseSimonette, a senior, should

be tough on both sides of the ball. Last year he notched 36 tackles and had eight quarter-back sacks. Linebacker Gabi-no Rodriguiz and tackle Alex Burns, also a 2013 All-Confer-ence player, had 56 tackles each last year; Dan Popp had a dozen tackles last season.

MOVED ONFive All-Conference players

graduated in June, including quarterback John Christian, who led the team with 700 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground. Also gone are Joe Rynda, Conference Offensive Lineman of the Year; Pat Lloyd, who rushed for 500 yards, had 197 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in conference play; Josh Selly, who led the team in tackles and Aaron Dwyer, who had six touchdowns.

KEEP YOUR EYE ONOffenseTwo junior quarterbacks are

sure to thrill Titan fans: Trevor Smisek and Keegan Oak. Don’t

miss wide receiver junior Carter Rynda.

DefenseA pair of seniors, safety

Beulke and center Max Arroyo, and junior end Jordan Bar-tholomew will look to keep op-posing offenses on their heels.

OVERALL OUTLOOKExpect the Titans to be very

competitive in the Minnesota River Conference and in Sec-tion 1AAA. If they stay healthy, keep turnovers and penalties down, they have a chance to have a pretty solid team. As usual, TCU will play hard and its offensive and defensive lines should be a particularly strong.

TCU has to cut done the number of turnovers and pen-alties to be successful and im-

prove its pass rush on defense. It’s inexperienced at many posi-tions with only three returning starters on offense and four on defense. No Titan running back who had more than 100 yards rushing in 2013 will be back for the 2014 campaign.

“It should be a very balanced and very competitive confer-ence,” said Helland. “Any of the top four or five teams could win the conference.”

Watertown-Mayer, Bel le Plaine, and TCU (all 6-1 in conference in 2013) should be in contention for the 2014 Con-ference Title. Sibley East and Mayer Lutheran should also be in the hunt.

Tri-City United’s Charlie Simonette turns up eld after a catch against Le Sueur-Henderson. Simonette was instrumental in the Titans hurry up o ense, catching three passes for 54 yards and a touchdown on the two-minute drive. (Leader le photo)

Dooley and Mac Malecha, and junior omas Franek will be the only varsity runners to return fat the start of the 2014 campaign, though junior Ben Barnack will return aer a broken leg he suf-fered this summer heals.

First-year runner Kelly Nor-dling, along with Chris Peiper, Tanner Billmeyer, and Jeremy Walerius, will start the season on the varsity.

e girls team has six of the top seven girls from 2013 re-turning, including eighth-grader

Sarah Novak who missed going to state by less than a second last year.

Joslyn Vargo, Katy Raben-berg and Chloe Tuma all return from last year’s top ve. Morgan Skluzacek is back this fall this year aer missing almost two full seasons with injuries. She was an All-Conference and All-Section athlete previously.

MOVED ONOn the boys side, the Titans

lost two time state participant, All-Conference and All-Section runner Marty McGuire, All-Conference runner Mitch Dooley, and four-year varsity letter winner Mick McGuire to graduation.

On the girls side, ve-year let-ter winner Sarah Fisher graduated in 2014.

2014 SEASON OUTLOOKLast year the boys team was

one of the best teams in southern Minnesota, winning three meets and placing in the top 20 percent of all nishers in every meet. e team placed second in the Minne-sota River Conference and fourth in Section 2A.

is year’s team will be a new bunch of kids, said Fogal.

“I believe we have a lot of tal-ent and we should be able to do pretty well again this year,” he said.

The favorite this year in the conference will be last year’s win-ner, Jordan. TCU and Belle Plaine should again stay close to the top.

In the section, Waseca and Martin County West have been al-most automatic on getting to state

as of late. Mankato Loyola, Belle Plaine and TCU should compete for the next best team.

On the girls team, TCU brings back most of the team from 2013. Last year it nished h in the eight-team conference and 12th in the 21 team section.

“We will be improved this year and should be able hang with the top two teams in the conference, Belle Plaine and Norwood,” said Fogal. “In the section, Waseca and Martin County West are re-

ally good again.”COMMENTS FROM THE

COACH“We have by far the big-

gest cross country team I have coached,” said Fogal. “With 45 athletes we should be right with Jordan and Belle Plaine for the largest teams in the conference. I’m really excited to see so many new kids coming out for the rst time. Not only will they help our cross country team but all these kids are multi-sport athletes that

will help them a great deal come winter and spring season.”

Head Coach: Phil Murry — 7 years

Assistant Coach: Sarah Adams — 10 years

Key Players:Kori Lowe, senior, played No. 2

singles last year, lead the Titans in victories. Will need to move up to No. 1 this year. All Conference last year. “Kori is a very solid, steady player,” Murry said. “She doesn’t make a lot of mistakes.”

Courtney Hentges, senior, will move from No. 3 singles to No. 2 this year. All conference last year. “She is an extremely athletic player,” Murry said. “She uses that athleticism to her advantage. She gets to a lot of balls that most players won’t.”

Rosa Ruiz, senior, played No. 4 singles last year and will either play there again or possibly move to No. 3, Murry said. “She gives us a very strong presence at the bottom of the line up.”

Keep an eye on:Kristi Frederick, junior, played

No. 1 doubles last year, will likely move to singles this year to solidify that spot.

Guadalupe Ruiz, freshman, earned a letter last year as an 8th-grader. Will likely bounce back and forth between singles and doubles.

Moved On:Breanna Jaycox, earned Honor-

able Mention All Conference last year. Played No. 1 singles

Season Outlook:“We went 3-5 in the conference

last year and we were 4-9 overall,”

Murry said. “We lost in the first round of the playo to Blue Earth Area. We were very competitive last year with 4 of our 9 losses by the score of 4-3.

“I look to take the next step this year and start winning some of those close matches. A lot will depend on how well our doubles continues to improve. Our conference is wide open. ere really isn’t a clear cut favorite. Anyone could beat anyone else on any given day.

“BEA and USC are two of the favorites in our section. ey return the core of their teams from a year ago.”

Coach’s Comments:“We have had a nice start to the

season. e kids have worked hard and I like our progress so far. We didn’t probably play as much tennis over the summer as we should have, but the kids have busy schedules, so we have a little catching up to do in that regard. — Phil Murry

Kyla Haas — freshman; Haas has competed at the state cross country meet the past two season. “She will be a leader on the team again this season,” Compton said.

Ester Archer — junior; “As the veteran on this team Archer will lead by example. With ve years of experience she knows what needs to be done, and the younger girls have someone to look up to,” Compton said.

KEEP YOUR EYE ONBrady Omtvedt – freshman;

Omtvedt earned an All-Confer-ence Honorable Mention last year at the conference meet.

MOVED ONFive seniors graduated from

last year’s team: Wyatt Elmer (two-time state participant), Andrew Murray (All-Conference Hon-orable Mention), Nick Courrier, Justine Compton and Elizabeth Piepho.

2014 SEASON OUTLOOKLast year the Loyola/Cleve-

On the girls side, the Crusad-ers won the Gopher-Valley Con-

ference Championship last year. Earning All-Conference honors for the girls were Haas, Archer, Allison Rupp and Laynie Kubista. e girls nished 4th in the Section 2A Championship meet. ere are a couple of strong teams that will be battling for the conference title.

COMMENTS FROM THE COACH

“is season will be a fun sea-son for our team. We graduated quite a few from last year’s team, but we have a group of young run-ners who are willing to work hard. With our two seniors (Guentzel and Nate Johnson), we have strong leaders for our younger guys to look up to.

“e girls graduated two long-

time members of this team. Jus-tine and Elizabeth have been great contributors to our program for the past six years and they will be missed. e current team should be able to take what they’ve learned from them and have a successful season.

“We are looking forward to our boys gaining valuable varsity expe-

COMMENTS FROM THE COACH

“We come into the year with several positions to fill from last season’s team. e strength of the team will be the athleticism of both lines. We have healthy competition at several positions which will help develop the depth we will need as the season goes on. Our numbers

are down this season (10-12), so our challenge will be to remain healthy.” — Brian Odland, head coach.

“Team Goals: win the East side of the Big South Conference and play against Marshall; west side, for the Big South title. Plus, win the subsection and make it to the sec-tion championship game. — Car-men Hanson

Lind led the Saints with 22 goals and and had three assists last season as the top player in the South Central Conference, however she is out for her senior season with ACL knee surgery and will serve as a team manager.

Springer, a senior mideld at-tacker, had 13 goals and 11 assists last season in earning All-SCC for the third time.

Dontje Lindell, a senior defen-sive midelder, had one goal and three assists last season.

Kruger, a junior goalkeeper, had a 1.12 goals against average and an 88 percent save percent-age last year.

Anderson, a junior midelder/forward has seven goals and two assists last season

Wiebusch, a junior outside defender, is the leading stopper.

MOVED ONSara OsborneChloe BachmanBethany Anderson2014 SEASON OUTLOOK“2014 looks to be a season

where some very positive things can happen,” Larson said. “With 12 returning letter winners and six seniors/eight juniors, we’ll have a very experienced squad. Twelve members of the team have been to the state tournament at least once, several have been there twice.

In 2013, St. Peter nished 11-4-1 overall, 6-1-1 in the South Central Conference (1st), No. 1 seed in Section 2A, and section runner-up

COMMENTS FROM THE COACH

“is is the rst year for e Big South Conference, with Worthington being added to the mix (with Fairmont, New Ulm, Waseca, and Mankato Loyola), and competition for the title will be strong,” Larson said. “Waseca and St. Peter would be considered frontrunners, but as many as four teams could contest for the title.

“Section 2A, as usual, will be a dogght from start to nish. As many as six teams could vie for the top seed. In the end, St. Peter should be solidly in the mix.” — Karl Larson, head coach

Rothenberger picks these as the section favorites: Blue Earth Area, United South Central and Sibley East. St. Peter hopes to be close to those mentioned teams this year.

COMMENTS FROM THE COACH

“We have all four starting singles players back with Rachel, Val, Katie, and Aliza Doherty. Our doubles will have many dierent players that our young changed in and out of the starting lineup. We may have to shuffle some of the singles players into the doubles lineup against certain teams.

“Our success will all depend on how well we play at the 3 and 4 singles and 3rd doubles position. If the team can get consistent wins at those three spots, then we have pretty good odds of defeating most of our section and conference op-ponents.” — Aaron Rothenberger, head coach

Placed 27th out of 43 teams at the State Swimming and Div-ing Meet with two Relays and the individual performance of Casey Rezmerski placing 5th in the 50 Free and 13th in the 100 Free

“e coaches and athletes are re-ally excited for the 2014 swimming and diving season,” Lager said. “We have so much to look forward to with 17 girls who qualied for the section meet last season returning and many of them are faster coming into this year. We also have a large group (18) of rst-year swimmers and divers who bring a lot of excite-ment and energy to the team.”

“One of our main goals this season is to have a full section ros-ter, meaning we would have four swimmers deep in all the individual events and ll the three relays. We want to get back to the state meet with at least two relays and some individuals in their stroke events. ere are some big holes in our line-up with the graduation of last year’s

senior class. We are hoping to ll in those gaps as the season progresses.”

COMMENTS FROM THE COACH

“e girls on the SPHS swim-ming and diving team are strong, hard working, and very competi-tive. e team’s success this year will depend on how healthy the girls can stay during the long training season. Injuries and illness can really aect the outcome of our goals so we have to be careful.

“Our dual meet schedule is al-ways tough. is year at the Section 1-A Swimming and Diving Meet we will face several of the best teams in the 2013 Class “A” State Tourna-ment. ese are ve teams from our Section that placed in the top 10 at State: Visitation-1st, Mankato West 2nd, Albert Lea 5th, Faribault 6th, and Northeld 9th. — Mary Lager.
