The idea of library as place and platform for community development is a growing concept for all libraries - academic, public and

special – and important in terms of providing service and improving the lives of our patrons. I invite you to join the conversation in Grand Rapids to share ideas, concepts and strategies that celebrate this sense of place and how it will shape the future of our Michigan library landscape.”

– Asante Cain, 2014-15 MLA President

“Librarians and libraries are often the center of their communities. It is vital that we not only celebrate our successes, but also share the programs, services and outreach that make Michigan libraries great. The number of threats from the outside require that we pull together as a profession and lead libraries into the future. The Conference Planning Work Group is confident that participants will discover how to lead, play, create, connect, grow, think and take risks at Annual. Let’s stand united in Grand Rapids and declare that ‘We Are Here!’”

– Kevin KingMLA 2014 Work Group Chair

EducationOpening Keynote – Wade Rouse

The work of author and humorist Wade Rouse has been featured multiple times on NBC’s Today Show as well as on Chelsea Lately on E!, People, Salon.com, Forbes.com, Publisher’s Weekly and Writer’s Digest. USA

Today calls Wade “a wise, witty and often wicked voice,” and the Chicago Tribune’s Pulitzer Prize-winning cultural critic states that Rouse’s memoirs are filled with “sparkling humor”. Writer’s Digest recently named Rouse the #2 Writer, Dead or Alive, “We’d Love to Have Drinks With” (Wade was just behind Ernest Hemingway, and just ahead of Hunter S. Thompson).

NEW Thursday Keynote – Imrov Effects An Improv Effects workshop is probably unlike any other team building or professional development event you’ve done before. It’s interactive. It’s fun. Anyone can do it. Everyone will take something away from it. Participants are actively engaged in the exercises that are rooted in the tenets of improvisation: active listening, positive support,

collaboration, empathy and reacting in the moment to allow a sense of, “Ah-hah!” This keynote will be fun and engaging, but also present tangible takeaways for positive communication and management approaches.

Closing Keynote – Hajj FlemingsHajj is a leading brand strategist; speaker and tech entrepreneur who inspires people and brands to build, launch and grow their ideas. Hajj was featured in CNN’s Black In America 4: The New Promised Land: Silicon Valley with Soledad O’Brien. In 2008 Hajj founded the Brand Camp Conference and has grown it into the largest personal branding conference in the Midwest and later expanded it to Boston and New York. His client list includes: Walt Disney, the Detroit Lions, Pitney Bowes and Pfizer. He has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, TechCrunch, Mashable and CNN Tech Money on the subjects of startups, entrepreneurship, digital technology and branding.

Luncheon programs – NEWWho says there is no such thing as a free lunch? New for 2014, Thursday luncheon programs are included in the registration package. Pre-registration is required. Choose from:• Anythink Libraries – Pam Sandlian Smith • Crucial Conversations – Kathleen Wheelihan • Michigan Author Luncheon• State Librarian’s Luncheon

Ignite If you missed this exciting session last year, you have another chance to see what the buzz is all about. Get ready for a rapid fire session of ideas that will inspire, challenge and motivate you. Speakers have just five minutes and 20 slides to share an idea, story or solution that ignites their passion for the library community.

Fizzle - NEWSuccess can teach you many things, but failure is often a more effective educator. Presented in the same high-energy vein as Ignite, speakers will share the agony of their defeats and how it helped them build better, stronger programs.

Fred will be signing copies of his book, Beervangelist’s Guide to the Galaxy, a seasonal tome on pairing, cooking and hosting with craft beer.Busing between the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel and the library will be provided by Grand Rapids Trolley Co.

Make the Case: Tips for Justifying Your Conference Attendance to Your Board or SupervisorLibrary budgets have taken a hit over the past few years, so how do you justify attending MLA 2014 to your board or supervisor? Here are a few tips to sell your attendance and increase your library’s ROI:

• Point out that the conference offers more than 60 breakout and poster sessions, as well as ample opportunities to network with your peers from across the state.

• The conference exhibit space contains a wealth of information on new products or services for your library, all under one roof. Shop now or “window shop” for future opportunities. Even if you are not responsible for purchasing at your library, time is well spent gaining an understanding of new technology and products to keep up on trends.

• Create a report to describe what you’ve learned and how you will share it with others in your library.

• Create an action plan to implement what you’ve learned into your work or programming at the library. Periodically report on the actions that have been taken and the improvements they have made in the library.

• Train others. Share the session handouts and ideas you’ve learned with your co-workers.

• Report your conference attendance and the fact that you are continuing your education to improve library services to your local newspaper, bringing your library into the public light in yet another way.

• While discussing purchases or programming for your library with your supervisor, be sure to preface your statement with “One of the speakers at the MLA annual conference said....” Or, “I saw this new product at the MLA exhibits, with it, we can....” Giving credit like this will reinforce the thought that the MLA Annual Conference is a benefit, not only to you, but to the library overall.

MLA Annual Membership MeetingPresident Asante Cain will preside over the business meeting beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday which will include an overview of MLA’s activities. Special recognition will be given to outgoing MLA board members. Please show your continued support for MLA leadership by joining us for this meeting.

Conference VolunteersVolunteers are needed to assist with various activities to ensure MLA 2014 runs smoothly. Volunteer areas include: registration desk, membership booth, program room monitors, audio-visual support and dine-around hosts. Visit www.milibraries.org for more information.
