YOU ARE HERE IS A CURATED FESTIVAL WHICH SHOWCASES THE BEST OF CANBERRA’S DIVERSE INDEPENDENT AND EXPERIMENTAL ARTS AND CULTURE. ORIGINALLY COMMISSIONED IN 2011 BY ROBYN ARCHER (AO) TO ENLIVEN THE CANBERRA CBD IN THE LEAD-UP TO THE CENTENARY OF CANBERRA, YOU ARE HERE HAS GROWN INTO A SIGNIFICANT CULTURAL EVENT ON THE NATIONAL SCALE, AND A HIGHLIGHT OF CANBERRA’S CULTURAL CALENDAR. AFTER THREE SUCCESSFUL YEARS, YOU ARE HERE HAS BECOME A FIXTURE OF THE CANBERRA ARTS LANDSCAPE AND IS QUICKLY BECOMING ESTABLISHED AS ONE OF THE PRE-EMINENT EXPERIMENTAL AND EMERGING ARTS FESTIVALS IN THE AUSTRALIAN ARTS CALENDAR.

FORE WORDSIn 2014, You Are Here is proud to be back as

absurd and delightful as ever, with yet another program brimming over with events encompassing theatre, music, dance, poetry, visual arts, creative communities and everything in between.

In our short life, You Are Here has drawn together diverse and extremely talented artists, uniting them with unusual locations and enthusiastic audiences ready to explore the unknown. Renewal and transformation are at the heart of the festival year after year, and we are grateful to be able to continue to develop and further the momentum behind You Are Here with funding from the ACT Government, as well as ongoing support provided by Canberra CBD Ltd.

This year marks a big change for the festival as we farewell the brilliant team that was David Finnigan, Yolande Norris and Adam Hadley. In 2014, producers Nick Delatovic, Sarah Kaur and Vanessa Wright take charge, joined by Adelaide Rief and Andrew Galan.

Even though there have been some changes, You Are Here continues to be a festival inspired by Canberra’s artistic community, as much as it is conceived in the mind of the producers. And we do what we do so that artists can experiment with ideas, take risks and create work that challenges our conceptions of what art can be (and who it’s for). Taking risks is a significant act in this world, and we’re ready to let You Are Here swerve into the traffic of life and continue to foster a community that is ready to take chances, create and observe new work, explore new ideas and new ways of defining Canberra.

And we can’t do any of this without the aces up our sleeve; the staff, artists and audiences willing to take a leap with us, to trust us and to continually turn up with open and inquiring minds, no matter what crazy ideas we throw at you. Without your support this wouldn’t be a festival, it wouldn’t be a thing at all, so thank you.

FORE WORDSThe You Are Here Festival has become a

significant highlight of Canberra’s cultural calendar and a key fixture of the Canberra arts scene.

The festival is fast emerging as a pre-eminent experimental annual celebration, providing opportunity for emerging artists to showcase their arts and cultural talent.

Working with Canberra CBD Limited, You Are Here presents arts activity in non-traditional venues, revitalising city spaces and showcasing Canberra as a youthful and vibrant city.

The ACT Government is proud to support You Are Here through the ACT Event Fund, which assists local festivals and events that enrich our community’s experience of living in and visiting Canberra.

I warmly welcome interstate visitors to our beautiful city, to immerse themselves in You Are Here 2014 and I encourage Canberrans to explore the novel and unique aspects of this exciting cultural celebration.

I am delighted the ACT Government is once again supporting the You Are Here festival in 2014. You Are Here is an energetic and dynamic event that supports emerging and independent artists and invites the community to participate in its activities, which are held throughout the city.

The ACT is fortunate to be home to a vibrant arts community which brings our city to life with colour, movement, music and incredible talent. The ACT Government recognises that the You Are Here festival, now in its fourth year, is an important part of our artistic landscape and is pleased to continue its support.

The festival has received significant support from the ACT Arts Fund, through its Program category, to continue to stage the event. My thanks also goes to Canberra CBD Ltd, which is a strong supporter of the event and will once again assist with funding and offering street front shops and unused offices in the city for performances and events.

The enthusiastic and dedicated team of You Are Here producers have curated a program of diverse and experimental arts activities that is sure to attract a strong live audience and interactive social media exchange across Australia.

Launching at this year’s festival, through the support of the ACT Arts Fund, is Canberra Zine Emporium Zine Vending Machine, which will showcase the fabulous works of Canberra’s zine and comic makers. Following the festival, the ‘Zine Machine’ will tour to several locations in the ACT region.

I encourage all Canberrans to show your support for our local artists and join in the celebrations, performances and activities the 2014 You Are Here festival has to offer. There is sure to be an exciting event offering for everyone.

The You Are Here festival is one of the most exciting events in Canberra’s strong 2014 artistic programme. The festival brings together Canberra’s safest performers with some special national and international guests that have been stringently screened for your protection.

I would like to commend the tireless work of our Chief of Public Relations, Ms X, who has gone well above the call of duty to personally investigate the private lives of each and every individual associated with the festival.

For far too long the Canberra arts scene has been challenged by artistic terrorists, holding innocent audiences to ransom with their radical ideas of ‘art’. It would be better that the shameful scenes of the three previous indulgent and debauched You Are Here festivals be expunged from the pages of history.

But let us not dwell on the former administration’s mistakes. The content of this year’s festival is rich, vibrant and most of all, Acceptable.

As you will no doubt be aware, the Benevolent Ministry of Art recently released the updated Doctrines of Acceptable Art. I personally lead the development of the updated Doctrines. Happily they have already enabled the exclusion of several risky and unsavoury items from this festival. The remaining performances are therefore Scientifically Proven to be entirely Acceptable Art.

I hope you will take the time to enjoy this You Are Here festival, in moderation.

You Are Here has invited writers and artists with a connection to Canberra to compose a letter to a Canberra suburb. We asked for poetry, short stories and artistic collaborations, all composed with a memory or an experience of Canberra in mind. In the lead up to the festival the resulting works have been posted to randomly selected addresses across Canberra – so you might just find one in your letterbox. But, if the postman doesn’t deliver you a letter then you can find these works on our website or pick one up from the You Are Here Letter Box at Blurred Lines, on Sunday 23 March at Gorman Arts Centre.

The Pop Up Trike is a roaming gallery space that features the work of local artists and conveniently packs down onto the back of a trike. Operating throughout the festival you can catch the Trike at events such as Neon Night Rider, Free Music for Rich Kids and Blurred Lines. Canberra’s alleys and city corners feature a diverse array of paste-ups; DIY street art with localism at its heart. This year, You Are Here is going to flip this on its head and take Canberra paste ups out into the world! We have created an online repository of paste up templates from Canberra artists, which can be downloaded, printed and pasted up in the world. So call your friends overseas and at home and get them pasting, it’s time to spread the art.

Blaze is said by some to symbolically open the art year in Canberra, and this year it will go off with a bang. The artists included in Blaze 8 are making work that is bigger, bolder and punchier than they have previously dared. From Alex Lewis’ gigantic labyrinthine staircase to S.A. Adair’s massive felt drawing installation, from Martin James’ poignant and political large-scale prints to Katy Mutton’s cloudscape ink drawings of World War II aircraft in flight, Blaze 8 will take viewers to new heights.

MAITLAND SCHNAARS WITH EMMA KELLYWhen: 6.15pm–6.45pm Where: Gorman Arts Centre

Maitland Schnaars and Emma Kelly collaborate to bring you a hybrid performance work incorporating music and poetry.

Maitland Schnaars creates hybrid performance pieces combining poetry, multi-media, visual art, movement and sound. A graduate of Theatre and Acting for Camera at the Western Australian Academy Performing Arts, he also studied Contemporary Performance at Edith Cowan University. In 2003 he won the Western Mining Corp award for Best Indigenous Male Artist and in 2005 co-founded the international theatre company Corazon de Vaca who were commissioned to create a brand new work to be premiered at the World EXPO in Zaragoza, Spain. Maitland continues to develop his skills as a writer, performer and creator.

Violinist, composer and vocalist, Emma Kelly has written and performed in some of Canberra’s most well-regarded bands, including The Ellis Collective, Mr Fibby, Fun Machine and Cracked Actor, and is becoming an increasing presence on the electronic music scene.

1972. Australia’s capital city. No, Canberra. No, not Melbourne either. Detective Glyn Roberts and Defective Tobias M-G are the Governor General’s Finest, newly appointed special constables. Diplomacy! High-level governance! Sheep!

MKA are researching and creating the script for the pilot cult-stage show that precedes the hit TV show that Aunty will buy. SBS TWO? Each day using the exciting new formerly defence force only technology of ‘the internet’, The Filth, will share short recordings of their investigations and on the final night present the text for you the people who’ll buy the t-shirts.

SHE’S LOST CONTROLWhen: 8pm–9.30pm Where: The Money Bin

All-girl art collective, Hissy Fit present She’s Lost Control, a lecture performance exploring the action of head-banging through its dual somatic relationship to the performance of hysteria and the contemporary rock, punk and heavy metal music culture of the MTV generation.

Within She’s Lost Control, Hissy Fit tie together live performance, video, queer theory and psychoanalysis in this lecture spectacle.

Kiki, Bob and Jumper are best friends with extravagant and idiosyncratic dreams. Kiki wants to dance the tango on Mount Kilimanjaro with a bearded lady, Jumper is in love with a snake called Trix and Bob’s an ordinary bloke who might just hold the secret to time travel. A comedy about growing up, dying young and being extraordinary no matter what.

Following sell-out seasons at the Melbourne and Sydney Fringe Festivals, Brisbane Festival and Theatreworks St Kilda, plus heaps of awards and nominations, Canberra Youth Theatre, Gorman Arts Centre and YAH are proud to co-present the first ACT production of Arthur Productions’ Cut Snake.

This is the section of the You Are Here program that you’re allowed to bring food to. Music! Poetry! Dance! The food that you bring! Every weekday at The Money Bin.

When do we pull our head out of the sand and face the music? Melbourne theatre maker Olivia Monticciolo teams up with Canberra singer/songwriter Matty Ellis in this exploration of love, and hardship. Come down to the beach and be washed away by the Black Words.

Admit-one is an intimate, site specific, interactive performance work combining dance, theatre and installation. Personal, reactive and responsive, a single audience member is invited to uncover something of themselves directing and guiding the experience that unfolds. Independent solo artists Tanya and Alison are concerned with the impact of solitary and one-on-one creative practice, both process and performance, and blur the line between performer and audience member.

You Are Here is taking one of the ACT’s most precious resources – our wealth of musical talent – and giving it away for nothing! It’s a multi-stage music festival in the heart of the city, without the ticket prices or the food and bathroom lines. 18 bands across four stages in four hours, presented by You Are Here, Cinnamon Records, The Canberra Musicians Club and Subsequence Radio. How many bands can you see?

Writing on the Internet is not easy – as the walls between reader and writer dissolve, criticism is no longer limited to Letters to the Editor, and can instead result in comments telling you that you are a meaningless piece of shit at all hours of the day and night. With some writers even being driven to attempted suicide from internet trolling, it’s time to talk survival tips and coping mechanisms. Lip Magazine has assembled three experienced troll–survivors who will talk the ethics of Internet commentary, how to cope with nasty comments, and consider the question, at what point we accept trolling as part of the new media landscape?

Description: Remember the first time you arrived? You’d always spoken the language of overpasses, skyscrapers and tram tracks, and in this new place you had no phrasebook or map, bell or key or candle. And someone said you shouldn’t have come in the first place, but here you are, trying to blend into the architecture just to belong.

Zoë Anderson and Raphael Kabo remember. They’ve been writing words about cities, and somehow this happened: part myth, part play, part storytelling, it’s an ode to what cities are, what cities could be, and what happens when you try to blend into the architecture but the architecture doesn’t like you.

Over the festival, You Are Here will feature a selection of artists guest-programming a selection of their favourite video clips, complete with interviews, discussion and live performances. This year gRage will be presented by Yen Eriksen, one of the hosts of Friday Night Lip Service on 2XX FM.

Chris ‘CJ Bowerbird’ is a performance poet and former Australian Poetry Slam champion. His brother Pete plays bass in beloved indie-rock band Waterford. They’ve never shared a stage, let alone negotiated their individual tastes in music in front of a live audience – until now!

The Exorcism of Megan Clune and Angela Goh is a performance which simultaneously reproduces and annihilates itself, becoming possessed in order to save itself. All of the music which has ever been learnt by the musician Megan Clune, and all the dance which has ever been learnt by the dancer Angela Goh, is transformed through the ceremony of exorcism. It interrogates ideas of authenticity and authorship, and reveals the work of the performer and the expectation of the audience. It steals from everywhere and owns everything, in order to conjure up history and channel a new future.

With all our face-spaces and tweeties, it is easy to see how advances in technology have affected the way we communicate and connect with each other. Pretext traces a love affair that spans multiple modes of communication – from love letters through to emails and eye-phones of the imagined future. But how does the transformative nature of communication affect the language of love? Does technology make us colder, more distant or does ‘I love you’ mean the same thing in any font?

Exploring the nuances of vibration is percussionist Veronica Bailey, a graduate of the ANU School of Music. Opening Nights is You Are Here’s first ever 24-hour exhibition series. Over five days, artists have access to our gallery space for 24 short hours. In that time they must install their exhibition, have an opening with all the pomp and ceremony they can handle, then pack down while someone else is trying to install and the festival keeps on happening. It is insanity. The only way to see it is to be there, every night for Opening Nights.

First up are Shellaine Godbold and Dan Edwards, with new works in response to recent and future travels through Asia. Investigating traditional Art and Craft techniques and cultural practices Arrival/Departure focuses on creative moments of cultural collaboration undertaken in overseas art residencies.

Have you noticed that when you watch a film over, the way you experience it is never the same twice? This evening explores what happens when you see one film, played three times with performances by three different bands.

Louise Curham’s films are made for improvising musicians – the opposite of story films, these are living paintings. Featuring abstract imagery that’s cracked, heavily inked, bleached, deteriorated in every way possible, they are a wash of colour and texture. Fleeting photographic images appear in the odd hand-processed frame. This is bare bones cinema in extremis where narrative is a strange old firebird that won’t be killed off even by crazy sounds and every visual attempt to obliterate it.

Capital Artists Gallery

Lumen is an exhibition of new video, multimedia installation and works on aluminium by Canberra-based artist Alexander Boynes. It explores human adaptation, the boundaries set by our environment, and the ephemeral nature of existence. The exhibition aims to reveal immediate glimpses into the present-day human condition and imagination, and to address contemporary culture and its fears, challenges and the hope for a positive future for Australia.

Award-winning classical guitarist Matt Withers is Head of Guitar at the University of Canberra Music as well as a Director of the Canberra Classical Guitar Society. He is a member of Guitar Trek, one of Australia’s greatest guitar quartets which has performed music from across the globe, many historical periods and popular traditions, and Australia’s own phenomenally inventive contemporary composers. In this edition of the Loner Sessions Matt invites you to share in some of his favourite pieces.

It’s back-to-back Loner Sessions as trumpeter, Reuben Lewis captivates you with his ardent jazz inspired originals, followed by a experimental jazz vocalist Jenny Barnes.

Reuben Lewis is a trumpeter, composer, improviser, and a new driving force in the Australian jazz and experimental music community. Reuben has written for short film, classical ensembles, pop/alternative bands, reggae/roots/folk outfits and jazz/experimental/improvising ensembles ranging from solo to big band. His third album, featuring a Berlin-based free improvised trio and electronic post-production artist, will be released in early 2014.

Jenny Barnes trained as a jazz vocalist and her current work explores the intersections between jazz and experimental vocal techniques within varied acoustic spaces. In her work, Jenny has investigated the relationships between sound and environment, releasing a collection of these improvisations in the release Secret Trees (2011).

Local medieval and fantasy battle sports group The Hundred Swords is running a specially scripted demonstration battle just for you! No clue about latex sword etiquette? No problem! Every Hundred Swords event is beginner friendly and the rules can be picked up in 5 minutes.

Weapons will be available for loan on the day - but you must bring some sort of eye protection to participate (goggles are perfect, cheap sunglasses are okay too).

You may not quite know this group of hot artists yet but One Night Stand promises to be much more than a brief encounter with strangers. For one night only the 2014 Canberra Contemporary Art Space’s Studio Residents strut their stuff for You Are Here. Sabrina Baker, Anja Loughhead, Jacob Potter, Daniel Savage, Chris Sutevski, and Danny Wild represent a sample of Canberra’s most exciting emerging artists and this will be their first group outing. One Night Stand is an eclectic exhibition that occupies the front lines of experimental media. All six artists dare to side step traditional notions of art form and as a result, audiences can expect the unexpected. One Night Stand is the beginning of a long and meaningful relationship.

Since its creation the photograph has had a long-standing romance with the portrait, ideally setting out to capture a sitter’s ‘real’ identity. However, the idealised notion that the photograph has the ability to capture the essence of an individual is a flawed idea. Through the medium of performative video portraits and driven by the need to understand my own identity, this project experiments with how the photographic portrait is a tool that constructs, rather than documents, a person’s identity. Who is Dani Cabs? is a series of short videos re-enacting and delivering past experiences, and exploring perceived stereotypes. It works as a vehicle for self-exploration but also as an introduction of myself to you, the viewer.

Join You Are Here on the banks of Lake Burley Griffin, for our first ever incandescent community bike ride. As the sun sets, bring yourself and your bike (and your friends), covered in as much illumination as you can handle and become part of the glowing cavalcade that will stream from bridge to bridge. We’re not expecting Guinness Book of World Records winning Christmas lights, you’re welcome if it’s just you and a torch strapped to your helmet and a smile on your dial. Along the way there will be cause for pause at checkpoints where performers will entertain you with their glimmering talents and installations will put stars in your eyes.

Meet us at the marshalling point or join in anytime along the bike path that runs from Commonwealth Bridge to Kings Way Bridge.

P.S. You have to have lights and a helmet to ride. So says the law.

Do you do art? Maybe you play music, or take photos, or write articles and fiction. Do you like doing it? Well, then you should do it for FREE right? Increasingly, creatives are experiencing pressure to work for free. Writers are expected to undertake endless unpaid internships with organisations as big as Crikey and major newspapers are not paying for articles. Musicians are regularly asked to play for free, photographers expected to shoot gigs and events for free, and all of this is often done in the name of ‘exposure’. Lip Magazine brings you three panelists from various creative backgrounds to dissect this issue. Should we art for free? Or should we demand payment? Should we turn down free work out of solidarity for the industry? Where do we draw the line?

In the late 90s, Simon Binns was obsessed with Animorphs by K.A. Applegate. This young adult sci-fi book series was about a cohort of American teens who discovered a silent alien invasion and were given the power to fight back through the ability to morph into animals. It provided much fodder for Simon’s prepubescent imagination.

Animorphed is a one-man show centred around the reading of excerpts from Animorphs. Interspersed throughout are personal stories about Simon’s connection to the books. Whilst focusing on Animorphs, the show will also look more broadly at the theme of breaking the rose coloured glass through which we view childhood experiences. Simon will also attempt to morph into an adorable rabbit.

A work which explores gender, sexuality, power, personal desire and nineteenth century Norway… maybe.

Carly and Troy do ‘A Doll’s House’ is a show about theatre, about how we view and revere classics, about what we want, what the audience wants but mainly what Carly and Troy want. In just one hour, Carly and Troy will show you their own, personal adaptation of the Ibsen classic A Doll’s House. The realist masterwork will be dissected, torn apart and inhabited, culminating in a mash-up of pop-culture, drag, feminist analysis and a lot of butcher’s paper.

After sell out seasons in Sydney, Adelaide and at Crack Theatre Festival in Newcastle, Carly and Troy are donning their heels and strutting to Canberra for one weekend only.

There are more men than women on the stage at most stand up comedy nights. This is a problem. There’s also never enough comedy tomfoolery at serious arts festivals. Hosted by Rosie Stevens (Scissors Paper Pen), artists from a range of art forms discuss what exactly makes Canberra’s diverse artistic community bubble - despite all the (usually interstate) bad vibes.

ORIGINALLY COMMISSIONED IN 2011 BY ROBYN ARCHER (AO) TO ENLIVEN THE CANBERRA CBD IN THE LEAD-UP TO THE CENTENARY OF CANBERRA, YOU ARE HERE HAS GROWN INTO A SIGNIFICANT CULTURAL EVENT ON THE NATIONAL SCALE, AND A HIGHLIGHT OF CANBERRA’S CULTURAL CALENDAR. AFTER THREE SUCCESSFUL YEARS, YOU ARE HERE HAS BECOME A FIXTURE OF THE CANBERRA ARTS LANDSCAPE AND IS QUICKLY BECOMING ESTABLISHED AS ONE OF THE PRE-EMINENT EXPERIMENTAL AND EMERGING ARTS FESTIVALS IN THE AUSTRALIAN ARTS CALENDAR.
