Griffth Festival of Gardens

Special Guest | Sophie ThomsonSophie’s passion for plants and gardening was passed on to her by her parents and she cut her teeth working in the family plant nursery, David Thomson Nursery at Summertown in the Adelaide Hills. When the business was sold in 1997 she became a garden consultant and took a more active role in the gardening media, doing talkback radio, television and writing.

As well as presenting for the ABC Television’s Gardening Australia and writing for the Gardening Australia magazine, she writes the weekly gardening column for the Sunday Mail and the Weekender Herald. She is the garden writer for the quarterly Adelaide Hills Magazine, which in 2010 was voted the best regional publication in Australia. Sophie’s first book From the Ground Up - a complete guide for South Australian Gardeners was released in November 2008 and was judged the best general gardening book in Australia at the 2009 biennial Laurel Awards for Horticultural Media of Australia. From the Ground Up is the first South Australian book to ever win this award. Sophie co-authored the Reader’s Digest book Waterwise Gardening which was released in 2010.

Sophie is a garden consultant for a wide variety of South Australian gardens. With a very strong focus on appropriate plant selection, she likes to help her clients develop waterwise, climate compatible gardens that have colour and interest for the whole twelve months of the year. Her clients range from home gardeners to Government House.

Sophie is patron of a number of organisations including the Duck Flat Community Garden, Friends of Waite Arboretum, the SA chapter of Sustainable Gardening Australia and the Cactus and Succulent Society of SA, and Ambassador of Horticultural Therapy SA. As a popular guest speaker, Sophie has spoken at hundreds of gardening and lifestyle events, garden clubs and plant societies. Her enthusiasm and passion for plants and gardening appeals to people of all ages.

We extend to you a warm invitation to come to Griffith -

The Garden City of the Riverina. Come and enjoy the colourful...

I hope that you will accept the invitation to visit Griffith in October for the annual Festival of Gardens from 12 to 15 October, 2012.

Griffith and surrounding gardeners have had to respond to the challenges of drought and more recently the 2012 floods. The owners and their gardens included in this years festival are testimony to their enthusiasm and perseverance.

There will be 10 gardens open for visitors. Some of the gardens are being opened to the public for the first time and those new garden owners are looking forward to the opportunity to show their garden to interested visitors. Other gardens which have long been favourites of regular visitors have new areas and plantings amidst the established features.

Our special guest Sophie Thomson from ABC Gardening will bring her gardening knowledge and experience to share with visitors in the gardens, at the launch at St Alban’s Cathedral on Friday evening and at the festival dinner, which will be held at Griffith Ex-Servicemens Club on Saturday night.

Of course Griffith has more to offer than gardens. Griffith is a multicultural community with a range of cafés and restaurants, retail outlets and much more.

2012 is definitely the year to visit Griffith and appreciate all that our gardening and festival community has to provide for you.

Pat Cox Chair, Griffith Festival of Gardens Committee

Unique

Citrus Sculptures | on display 7 - 20 October

SCULPTURESCITRUS

Based on the famous Menton (France) Sculptures there will be a vast number of these fantastic, larger than life, colourful and imaginative creations on display in Banna Avenue. Now in their 17th year!

The Citrus Sculptures are a feature of the Griffith Festival of Gardens. In 1993 the Women’s Weekly did a story on the famous sculptures in Menton, France and a community member brought it in and said ‘if they can do it, why can’t we since Griffith is such a great citrus growing area’.

After consulting local engineers and contacting France, we were granted permission to use their method of securing the fruit here in Griffith and in 1995 the first sculptures were created.

We were then granted permission to use the Citrus Sculptures as a promotion of the Griffith Festival Of Gardens. In 1995 the first sculp-tures were created. As they were so well received, the festival chair-person at the time was passionate that we continue with the Citrus Sculptures. From 4 sculptures in 1995, that number has now grown to more than 50!

Riverina Citrus Growers Inc. have been very supportive and generous this year, we could not do it without their co-operation. We will use in excess of 100,000 oranges and grapefruit to construct the sculptures. The smaller sculptures use about 200 - 300 oranges and grapefruit and the larger ones will use around 8,000 - 10,000.

One third of Australia’s citrus is grown in the Riverina and it is the largest orange production region in the country. Our unique combi-nation of water security, fertile soils and warm climate produce some of the highest quality fruit on the global market.

The average annual production of citrus in the Riverina is approxi-mately 200,000 tonnes with approximately 120,000 tonnes going to the juice market. The Riverina also successfully exports a large pro-portion of their produce.
