WELCOMEWelcome to an extraordinary year here at YorkTheatre Royal. A year we have been workingtowards for a very long time. A year where weclose our doors in March for eight months, toundergo a major Capital development of ourbuilding. And a year when we partner withother key organisations in the city to continueto produce a programme of work whilst thetheatre itself is closed.

Our £4.1 million Capital redevelopment projectwill transform the auditorium and the foyer, creating a far better experience for ouraudiences and those using the café andrestaurant facilities throughout the day. This isthe biggest renovation to happen to thishistoric building since 1967 and we aim toleave a legacy for many years to come. We arestill raising funds to make this happen so it’snot too late to support our fundraising appealby making a donation.

Meanwhile, we have been working withpartners across the city to plan an exciting yearof theatre. In May we are proud to becollaborating with The University of York andParrabbola to produce the very first YorkInternational Shakespeare Festival, which will

take place in venues across the city. In June wemove down the road to the National RailwayMuseum for two large scale productions thatwill take place amongst the museumcollections and in a 1000 seater purpose builttent. Building on our reputation for large scalecommunity theatre, we’ll once again engagewith hundreds of local participants in a newplay that takes its inspiration from York’srailway history, In Fog and Falling Snow, andwe’ll be bringing back our award-winningproduction, The Railway Children.

We have also been successful in a bid to take part in an exciting European project, Be SpectACTive!, so more of that to followlater in the year.

We’ll be closing our current building with apublic Open Day on Sunday 15th March andour Grand Opening will be in time for the2015 pantomime. We hope you’ll join us incelebrating the next chapter of this fabulousbuilding, that has served the citizens of Yorkfor over 250 years.

HAMLETDIAGNOSISWho would like to be Hamlet?

Max wants to be Hamlet. Hewants Shakespeare to makedecisions for him, speak for him, liberate him from his pain and hisfear through the words of hismost complex and analyzedcharacters. Because of this, dayafter day, he recreates the illusionof the life as a producer, encouraging and controlling hisnightmares as a puppeteer. Butthe brain is perverse and sooner orlater we must face the great truth:life is uncertainty.

KINGLEARDirected by Jonathan Miller

King Lear is the story of a family at war withitself. Lear, an aging and deeply flawedindividual, wrecks his relationship with histhree daughters and in doing so, loses all hehas. What is there left? This question, whichis Lear’s predicament and Shakespeare’sgenius, invites us all to think upon what wemight gain when nothing is all we have.

Miller famously described King Lear as “Themost interesting play Shakespeare everwrote”. With his keen eye for the subtletiesof human behaviour and a sharp focus on theemotional power of the story, be prepared fora ‘Lear’ stripped back to its heart and soul;intimate, moving and utterly believable.

This is Miller’s second collaboration with themulti award-winning Northern Broadsides; acompany whose trademark vigour, simplicityand down-to-earth performance style haswon over a whole new generation ofShakespeare fans.

A NEW WAY TO SUPPORT THE NEXT 270 YEARS OF YOUR THEATRE

A theatre has been operating on this site since 1744. In 1769 the legendary theatre impresario Tate Wilkinsonhad the vision to purchase a Royal patent for £500 (£32,000 in today’s money) and the Theatre has been‘Royal’ ever since.

What stands here today, however, is not a museum; it is a thriving and vibrant space still doing what it didwhen it first opened – presenting great drama and culture for the citizens of York and beyond. Withinvestment and support from the wider community York Theatre Royal has continually evolved to ensure itremains a dynamic theatre of which the city is quite rightly proud.

Play your partOver the next five to ten years we have exciting plans to continue the Theatre’s journey and with the launchof our new 1744 Club we would like you to join our next adventure. Your generosity could support our workon stage, provide Youth Theatre membership to a disadvantaged child, offer an up and coming director aplacement on one of our productions, or fund a script development workshop for a new play. From £20 permonth you can help to shape our future. Your support can help give us the platform on which to build anorganisation that continues to offer exciting and relevant theatre to the next generation and beyond. Itwould make Tate Wilkinson proud.

Please contact Vicky Biles (General Manager) or the Development Team to discuss how you can help us tocreate a York Theatre Royal for the future: 01904 658162 [email protected]
