WELCOMEThis season the Theatre Royal will be playing host to some of the biggest shows to come out of the West End. We are very excited to bring you the smash hit Legally Blonde The Musical, a show that has been dominating the box office in London since it opened. Direct from London’s Barbican we are also thrilled to present the Tony Award-winning production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s South Pacific. Glasgow will be the first Scottish date for both these productions so do not miss this great opportunity.

Based on the writings of journalist Jeffrey Bernard, Robert Powell (Holby City), takes to the boards in the witty, yet poignant, Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell. Comedy continues with the return of Jim Hacker and Sir Humprey Appleby in Yes, Prime Minister, a new version created by the original writers of the BBC television series and a big hit in London’s West End.

Following the success of The Habit of Art last year, the National Theatre’s production of The Pitmen Painters, winner of the recent Evening Standard Award for best play, will no doubt be another hit this July. The renowned Agatha Christie Theatre Company bring a touch of drama to the stage with their production of Verdict and later in the year don't miss the Olivier nominated Journey’s End. And of course we welcome our national companies, Scottish Ballet and Scottish Opera who will be gracing the stage with Alice (based on the Lewis Carroll stories) and Rigoletto, respectively.

If you haven’t already joined our Facebook page or signed up to our Twitter account now is as good a time as any, especially with so many top notch productions on the horizon, these are the quickest ways of getting the latest news, reviews, photos and everything else that happens backstage! Not only that but there are also unique opportunities to join us for press and group launches and other special events.

We also want to hear from you, so if you have any comments or ideas which you think would help to improve your experience here at the Theatre Royal, or at our sister venue the King’s, please do get in touch. You can email me at [email protected].

I look forward to welcoming you to the Theatre Royal very soon!

WORLD CLASS ICE SKATING IN THE INTIMACY OF THE THEATRE

The Imperial Ice Stars are back with a dynamic new interpretation of their award-winning

masterpiece Swan Lake on Ice.

With Tchaikovsky’s glorious music, exhilarating new choreography and dazzling new costumes, this innovative

portrayal of the classic love story will take your breath away.

The 26 World, European and National Championship skaters, who between them hold more than 250 competition medals, take contemporary ice dance to a new level with their daring

and graceful feats – some of which are so complex they haven’t yet been named – performed in the intimate

setting of a frozen theatre stage.

Verdi’s towering opera tells a tragic tale. Rigoletto, a jester employed by a rich and dissolute Duke, is forced to keep his master well supplied with fresh conquests. As a web of court intrigue tightens around him, Rigoletto finds himself the victim of a grave curse, but it is his carefully protected daughter Gilda who is the one to suffer.

From the aching naivety of Gilda’s first love to the Duke’s unthinking revelry and Rigoletto’s tortured realisation of his failure as a father, Verdi takes the characters from elation to despair in an opera densely packed with extraordinary music.

Director Matthew Richardson brings this operatic classic to the stage in a stylish, intelligent and theatrical production. English baritone Eddie Wade sings Rigoletto in his debut inthe role, and Nadine Livingston (Musetta in 2010’s La bohème) brings a fresh innocence to the role of Gilda. Tobias Ringborg conducts.

DIRECT FROM THE NATIONAL THEATRE AND BROADWAY

Originally produced by Newcastle’s acclaimed Live Theatre, and following sell-out seasons at the National Theatre and on

Broadway, Bill Kenwright presents the award-winning play The Pitmen Painters, which embarks on a national tour this spring prior to opening in the West End. Written by Lee Hall, creator of

the worldwide sensation Billy Elliot and directed by Max Roberts, The Pitmen Painters, has received huge critical acclaim and

won the Evening Standard award for Best New Play.

In 1934, a group of Ashington miners hired a professor to teach an art appreciation evening class. Rapidly abandoning theory in favour of practice, the pitmen began to paint. Within a few years the most

avant-garde artists became their friends and their work was acquired by prestigious collections; but every day they worked, as before, down the mine. Examining the lives of a group of ordinary men that do extraordinary things, The Pitmen Painters is a

humorous, deeply moving and timely look at art, class and politics.

NEW YORK’S LINCOLN CENTER THEATER PRODUCTION OF ‘RAPTUROUS AND REVELATORY!’ NEW YORK TIMES

‘GORGEOUS! SOUTH PACIFIC DOESN’T JUST FLOAT, IT SOARS!’USA TODAY

‘THE BEST RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN IN A GENERATION’ WASHINGTON POST

The producers of West Side Story and Guys and Dolls present the breathtaking and lavish Lincoln Center Theater production of

South Pacific. This international hit landmark production which reinvented the classic musical swept the 2008 Tony Awards, played

to sold-out houses on Broadway for 2 years, and is currently selling out across America. Considered one of the finest musicals ever written, the

score includes Some Enchanted Evening, I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair and There is Nothin’ Like a Dame.

Set on a tropical island during World War II, this is the sweeping romantic story of two couples, threatened by the realities of war and by their own

prejudices. Its portrayal of Americans stationed in an alien culture in wartime is as relevant today as when it first thrilled audiences.

With a cast of 40 and a live orchestra of 25, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to witness one of the greatest musicals of all time,

as the critics agree, ‘THIS IS A SHOW YOU WILL REMEMBER FOREVER.’
