WHO WE ARE

DIKTIO Network for Reform in Greece and Europe is an Athens-based independ-ent, nonpartisan, nonprofit research and policy institute that aims at developing strong, pragmatic, and innovative policy and advocacy on all aspects of European integration, Greek domestic politics and various currents impacting international structures. DIKTIO engages policymakers, business and political leaders and the public with innovative, fact-based research, ideas, and proactive analysis to elevate the domestic & European debate on necessary cross-sectoral reforms.

Its members include active citizens from all walks of life and background (aca-demics, entrepreneurs, educators, civil servants), firm believers in Greece’s Eu-ropean future. It is governed by a seven member Board, has four staff, a solid network of collaborators-volunteers and an International Council comprised of distinguished experts.

DIKTIO’s main activities serve to distill and strengthen the notion of being Eu-ropean citizens and to amplify the need for necessary reforms for achieving the European ideal to the benefit of all. They include a variety of public events for issues on the public agenda and development of Policy Proposals for Reforms at Greek and European levels.

One of the best known activities of DIKTIO is the production on a regular basis of

Policy Briefs. They analyze the current political situation in Greece and Eu-rope, available policy options and discuss proposals and policy consequences. Particular this DIKTIO’s action is very popular for the Greek press and media.

SPECIAL UNIT:The Fourth Industrial Revolution

DIKTIO has as core project for the year 2018 The Fourth Industrial Rev-olution, its prospects and challenges. In this context, we undertook a series of initiatives aiming on the one hand at raising awareness for the changes ahead in the structures of economy, production, labour markets and education and on the other hand at contributing to craft a national strategy of adaptation to the new era and its challenges.

Book 3: The “Thesaurus”, IDEA project

An integral part of the Jean Monnet Project IDEA, is the “THESAURUS”. It is a col-lection of commonly used words in many European languages stemming from the Indo-European ancestor language. Each word’s etymology is explained and linked to related EU policies and to the benefits of being a member of the Euro-pean family. Scientific leadership was by Professor C. Charalambakis, Emeritus Prof. of Linguistics. The publication is freely available in IDEA’s website www.idea4europe.eu in 5 languages (Greek, English, French, German, and Italian).

Book 4: 1st Report of the “Greek Public Sector Digital Modernization” Observatory

DIKTIO in the above mentioned 2018 core project context, published the first quar-terly review of the Observatory of Digital Modernisation of the Public Sector. The review is to be regularly updated, presenting the progress and developments of the implementation process of the National Digital Strategy and the various actions undertaken by each government agency. Diktio hosted two roundtables within the internationally recognised Delphi Economic Forum III (2018). More specifically, in the first panel the discussion focused on issues regarding the Fourth Industrial Revolution as well as the necessary adaptations economies and societies have to undergo so as to cope with the challenges of the new technological era. The second panel focused on the presentation on DIKTIO’s comparative analysis of agricultural industrial and development models implemented by three countries with similar size yet different productivity outcomes and divergence (Greece, Netherlands, Israel), the ways Greece can incorporate best practises and lessons learned as well as the challenged the digital age poses for agricultural production.

DIKTIO’s President Anna Diamantopoulou participated in a four-day policy visit to Turkey, jointly organized by the Center for Liberal Strategies and the Robert Bosch Stiftung, from January 9th-12th, together with a group of distinguished academics, politicians, diplomats, journalists and think tank executives.

Potsdam 2017: «THE FUTURE OF EUROPE THROUGH THE GLOBAL CHALLENGES»

Greece Forward III: Progressive policies for the cities today and tomorrow

For the third consecutive year the international conference «Greece Forward III» which co-organized by DIKTIO and FEPS, was held on Wensday 4th of October at the Acropolis Museum.

This year’s theme of the conference was «Progressive policies for the cities today and tomorrow».

The President of the Republic, H.E Mr. Prokopis Pavlopoulos, opened the pro-ceedings of the conference.

At the conference participated as speakers the Mayors of Athens, Thessaloniki, Piraeus (Greece), Florence (Italy) and Limassol (Cyprus), the governor of Central Greece and the VP of the EU Committee of the Regions.

«Faces on Divides» Eurolab #2, Thessaloniki

Anthi Soulitsioti, DIKTIO’s Research Associate presented at the 2nd Eurolab a joint analysis of Jacques Delors Institute and DIKTIO, on the various criteria that influ-ence and guide Greek MEPs votes at the European parliament. New Democracy MEP, EPP Group, Ms. Eliza Vozenberg gave a talk on “Euro-Parliament: functions and responsibilities”. Additional interventions and comments were contributed by Professor of International Relations University of Macedonia, Spyros Litsas and DIKTIO’s Director Mr. Yannis Mastrogeorgiou on 22 May 2017.

Series of public events within the context of DIKTIO’S ERASMUS+ JEAN MONNET Project IDEA, “AURORA THROUGH EUROPEAN IDENTITY and INTEGRATION”

DIKTIO organized a series of public events in three major cities, Athens-Thessa-loniki-Trikala to communicate and present the Erasmus+ Jean Monnet Project IDEA, “Aurora Through European Identity and Integration” and its “learn through play” education tool. In total, there were 6 public events, with over 750 students, and teachers, journalists, public figures and general audience attending. The event coordination was made by Ms. Flessa Vicky, well-known tv journalist. The event included the a word guessing game based on the THESAURUS collection of words spoken around Europe, sharing common Indo-European roots, video showing and discussions and debates.

Projects

i. IDEA

DIKTIO organized and coordinated The Erasmus+ Jean Monnet Project (2016-18) IDEA, “Aurora through European Identity and Integration” (PROJECT NUMBER -574833-EPP-1-2016-EL-EPPJMO-PROJECT).

Project’s main idea was to utilize and capitalize on the common ancestral lan-guage of European languages the Indo-European language. 20 out of the 24 offi-cial European languages share common roots.

«IDEA4Europe» consisted of 5 phases including research with distinct delivera-bles suitable for greek and non-greek audiences, and series of multiplier/publicity events. More specifically:

1. An online youth survey, “You and Europe” targeting youth 16-25. The aim was to elicit views, beliefs and opin-ions on the EU, while informing publicly the objectives of the project triggering a respective social debate and in-crease participation.

2. The THESAURUS, a compilation of commonly used words in several Europe-an languages that share the same roots from the Indo-European language. Each word’s etymology is explained and linked to related EU policies and benefits of being part of the EU.

3. A professionally created TV pilot show to show-case the word guessing

4. Public events in three major cities, Athens-Thessa-loniki-Trikala to promote the Project and communi-cate through the word guessing game and ensuing discussions and debates the common roots we all share and the benefits to our everyday life that stem from the European policies. Students, educa-tors, youth organizations, other stakeholders from civil society, media, public figures attended.

ii. Project «Faces on Divides»

DIKTIO - Network for Reform in Greece and Europe in partnership with Jacques Delors Institute imple-mented the project «Faces on Divides» (December 2017-May 2017) which was supported by the Euro-pean Parliament. The Jacques Delors Institute was the coordinator of the project and work hand in hand with civil society partners from:

1. Czech Republic (Europeum).

2. France (European Movement – France.

3. Greece (To Diktio). The project included public events that brought in con-tact citizens and MEPS and debated on what guided MEPs votes depending.

Diktio organized 2 public events in Athens with EP Members participating, Mr Androulakis in Athens, and Ms. Vozeberg in Thessaloniki. The events and study results were publicized in the media accordingly.

iii. DIKTIO New Research: SNIS Award for “gig economy” DIKTIO in collaboration with the University of Geneva and the ILO has received this year’s Swiss Network for International Studies (SNIS) award New work concepts resulting from the digital transformation are revolutionising the world of work. One term becoming more commonly used to to describe firms such as Uber, Amazon Flex, TaskRabbit, and AirBnB is the “gig economy”, as it highlights the temporary, short-term and tenuous nature of the employment. The ‘gig economy’ has profound implications for social dialogue and workers’ protection.

While some see gigging as a way into the workforce for the hard-to-employ, others portend a pessimistic future of workers with little or no income-security protections. As gig activities are not recognized as work, gig workers have limited access to income-security protections such as unemployment insurance, workers’ compensation and disability payments.

In order to understand and to respond effectively to these new challenges the International Labour Organization has launched a «Future of Work initiative», calling the global community to make social dialogue between governments and the social partners a key instrument for finding appropriate solutions to ensure that the opportunities that could accompany the gig economy do not occur at the expense of decent work.

The core of the research comprises a thorough examination of case studies of ‘crowdwork’ and ‘work-on-demand via app’ in the sectors of transport, hospitality and banking. The research follows a cross-national comparative design studying Switzerland, Germany, Greece and the UK.

The findings of the project will inform conversations and decisions of the 2019 International Labour Conference, which is the culmination of the ILO ‘’Future of Work Initiative’’.

iv. DIKTIO participated in the EU awareness raising campaign regarding use of plasticsAdopted on 16 January 2018, the first-ever Europe-wide Plastics Strategy is laying the foundations for a new and sustainable plastics economy. The aim is that all plastic packaging on the EU market will be recy-clable or reusable by 2030, the consump-tion of single-use plastics will be reduced, and the intentional use of microplastics will be restricted. By transforming the way in

which plastic products are designed, produced, used and recycled, Europe is set to take the lead in tackling plastics waste – and creating new investment oppor-tunities and jobs.

Working Breakfasts

DIKTIO hosts a series of working breakfasts with the participation of internationally distinguished personalities from politics, business, academia and local decision and opinion makers and business leaders.

DIKTIO organized working breakfast having as its guest François Heisbourg, Chair-man of the Foundation Council of the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP) and Director of the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS).

National and security affairs were the main discussion issue. However, the out-come of German general election and its impact both to european and domestic level, as well as the future of Transatlantic relations consumed a great deal of the ensuing discussion.

DIKTIO hosted its 14th Working Breakfast, having as main guest Mr. Leo Hoffmann – Axthelm, Research and Advocacy Coordinator for Eurozone Governance, Trans-parency International EU. Transparency International’s policy proposals to tackle problems related to struc-tural dysfunctions of EMU institutions and enhance their transparency and ac-countability constituted the principal discussion issue.
